Any plans after the oil cooler and suspension is checked? As my grandad always used to say " Cars are like model railways.... They are never finished " :D

Car is pretty much where I want it - I’m just never satisfied if there is something no matter how small not quite how I want it... so ur grandad was quite correct..

Rdlangy1 24-02-2018 02:28 PM

Ok so morning with Jules...

- coilovers tightened up
- diff oil changed
- gearbox oil changed

Also had a look at fitting oil cooler but I need a longer pipe..

Nice bit of routine maintenance done before tracking in April, June, July and August..

The Bug...

Another small update.

Car went down to “super Jules” once more to have the oil cooler saga sorted out.

I say saga because originally it was to have the mishimoto kit fitted. However as seen with Rob’s project thread - it’s really not meant for a U.K. Impreza.

So that went back and along came the HEL kit. Only problem was - it was too big!!

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...ceb1120976.jpg

We could have made it fit but 50% of the cooler would have been below the bumper and effectively not used.

So that went back and along come the spec C size oil cooler.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...eced7b6123.jpg

Fits like a dream and all of the cooler is in airflow meaning it’s being used efficiently.

Couple of hours and Jules had it fitted and nipped up neatly.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...e349833557.jpg

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...3729f7253d.jpg

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...98497e01ef.jpg

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...c4b3f14b3a.jpg

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...4650a2b8e3.jpg

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...7e5f0d41b5.jpg

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...203d70050.heic

So usual oil temp is 85-95 depending on speed and roads.

On way home the thermostatic plate kicks in at 80 and kept the oil at 80-85 all the way.

Really worked well including when I stopped for fuel - left garage at 95-100 and within a few miles was back down to 80-85...

Also gave the car another oil and filter change - even though it’s only been 180 miles and 6 months since the last one! Motul 300v chrono as usual...

:ok:

Was bored today and weather wasn’t bad so decided to smarten up my flaky blue air divert panel...

Nothing major but now a tidy matt Black.

The Bug...

Another tiny upgrade - noticed my exhaust hangers were a little spongy when I swapped the track back box over last time - these should help...

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...7eeac22be.heic

Also have the car booked in with RM Performance Banbury on 7th July to have the gearbox overhauled and upgraded.

Ever since I bought the car 3rd gear crunches badly and will not engage above 4000rpm.

Over time the rest of the gears have become slightly notchy to engage and so besides giving the gearbox oil a refresh every 12 months I thought it best to have the box removed, stripped, and rebuilt.

Going to have the Baulk Rings for 4th, 5th, 6th upgraded to Carbon Baulk rings as Subaru did with later models, and obviously any bearings, gears or other components replaced along with a Motul 300 gear oil change.

Hopefully it’s another step to making sure the fundamentals of the car are solid and secure :ok:

Fingers crossed...

Steve_PPP 13-06-2018 11:52 PM

I fitted the same bushes to mine mate, the holes in the original rubber hangers were stretched to about twice the size of the new ones

scooby doo 14-06-2018 12:23 AM

The early 6speeds did suffer with synchro's , my bug sti used to catch into 4th at very high revs .

Rdlangy1 07-07-2018 04:36 PM

The Bug...

Just a little update... the car is now with Tom & Rob at RM Performance Banbury for approx 3-4 weeks for its gearbox rebuild / upgrade...

Will update parts list in a week when I have it confirmed but few of the bits include carbon Baulk rings for 4th, 5th, 6th and a stage 3 Competition Clutch and lightened flywheel ready for next years plans.

Lastly - but most importantly - a massive, massive, massive thanks to my main man Mr Rob. Once again being a real gent and leaving his before 5am to get to mine and follow me up to Banbury in the Q5 so I had a means to get home... cannot thank you enough my man and owe you as always! :ok:

I’ll update with more info in a week or two..

Ryan

Rdlangy1 12-07-2018 04:42 PM

The Bug...

Ok an update from RM Performance.

Parts required are as follows:
3rd gear
3rd gear synchro
3rd gear hub
3rd gear sleeve
3rd gear selector fork
4th, 5th, 6th Baulk Carbon Baulk Rings
Competition Clutch Stage 3 clutch kit
Competition Clutch lightened flywheel
.....................
.....................
Now the unexpected parts:
4th gear
4th gear gear synchro
4th gear hub
4th gear sleeve
4th gear selector fork
Crankshaft rear oil seal minor leak

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...1bf54925ab.png

So although not knacked like 3rd gear was, 4th was showing heavy wear and so it makes sense to replace while in bits...

Plus side is my pink box clutch and lightened flywheel look in very good condition (only done around 4000 miles) so they will be sold on when I get them back.

Should collect in around 3-4wks as RM have a 2 week shut from Monday.

Ryan :ok:

scooby doo 12-07-2018 09:01 PM

Will be built proof after,
One of my bugs used to catch going 3rd into 4th at high rpm.
I think the bug early 6speeds had synchro issues and was revised on later year cars.

seventune 25-07-2018 07:02 PM

Oooh refreshed box, that will feel nice and crisp.... do like a nice new box....

Rdlangy1 01-08-2018 08:36 PM

Another small update - car is being picked up next week from RM Performance and also booked in at the end of August to have the two kerbed wheels refurbed :ok:

Frenchie 02-08-2018 10:43 AM

So your Wife has been using the car and curbed the wheels like mine

Rdlangy1 02-08-2018 10:45 AM

Afraid I can’t put this on her ha ha ha

See earlier posts from when I kerbed them - only just got round to getting them sorted...

Are you using Lepsons? Want mine done ,funds permitting or more importantly Lizzie's approval :-D

Rdlangy1 02-08-2018 06:48 PM

I would any other time........but no!

I’m using a mobile guy from Rochester who does work for Inchcape Audi...

Only charging £45 per rim. And I’ve given him the paint code I got from speedline so he can create a paint match..

Mine wheels are only kerb rash around the rim not chunks out - otherwise I’d go to lepsons.

Will let you know how I get on..

Bolesroor 02-08-2018 07:22 PM

Cheers Ryan 👍

Frenchie 03-08-2018 08:09 AM

I would also be interested in this.

Rdlangy1 03-08-2018 08:10 AM

:ok:

seventune 04-08-2018 12:10 PM

Hopefully he can match the speedline colour in with the code you have him.... they will look as good as new once they are done. It makes such a big difference to the over all appearance when wheels are clean and unchipped.... look forward to some pics :ok:

Rdlangy1 18-08-2018 05:29 PM

The Bug...

Well the car is back from RM Performance :ok:

Firstly a huge shout to my main man Mr Rob and his good lady Cassie for getting up at stupid o’clock and driving to mine for 6am so Rob could come up to collect the car and drive the Q5 back. Really appreciate it you guys :ok:

Ok as you know the list for the gearbox refurbishment was quite extensive with all of 3rd and 4th gear needing replacing along with hubs, selector forks, and everything that comes with. I also had the Subaru upgraded 3x carbon Baulk rings fitted.

A few pics of the gearbox in bits etc below:

Whilst this was being done, the guys at RM Performance noticed the rear crankshaft oil seal was leaking so I had that replaced and also had an RCM Billet oil separator plate installed ready for future plans :ok:

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...2f680537c7.jpg

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...bf2ace5f05.jpg

Then came the Competition Clutch Stage 3 kit and lightened flywheel

This completed the gearbox work.

Whilst chatting with Tom at RM (who is an amazing chap and so knowledgable) we discussed my future plans and we decided that a catch can would be beneficial.

One day later I was the proud owner of an RCM Track Track Catch Can Kit with return to my RCM baffled sump and had Tom, Mick, and Rob install it before I collected the car today.

I can not recommend these chaps at RM Performance enough. They are very very knowledgable, experts in transmission overhauls, upgrades, and also anything to do with general modification and servicing. Located 10mins from Prodrive :ok:

They also specialise in engine rebuilds and upgrades and lets just say we have had many a long email over the last week or two (sorry and thanks Tom! Ha ha) and I feel these guys will be seeing my car and another Scoob quite a lot towards the end of this year and most of next :ok:

Be sure to check them out if anyone needs gearbox, diff, engine work or general Modifying and servicing :10:
