Theres also stationary heat soak issue that a fmic over comes too.
the rings the worst for that, sitting in the Que waiting ready to go out then straight to full beans . i kept mine at low revs for the 1st bit to help towards this, Fmic will help instantly.

Steve_PPP 16-01-2019 05:47 PM

That's an interesting looking box mate. :-P

When are we going to see the shiny stuff inside it? :D

I find it much worse when coming off the Ring, everything is at a million degrees and then you have to queue to get off the circuit and through the car park!

Scotty's trouble was mostly a leaking coolant system.

What sums it up generally in my opinion is :
More power = more trouble.

Steve PPP's is virtually standard WRX with 90K plus on the clock and my WR1 is also virtually standard neither have had any issues.

After having now done 10 trips to the Ring as far as I know the only scoobs that haven't made it back are ones that have been modified running bigger turbos and then been remapped.

With bigger power yes its nice to have, but, everything else has to be uprated to suit.

A cost effective mod that people tend to not bother with is to get a baffled sump.

Soon as I’m home from the gym buddy :ok:

Rdlangy1 16-01-2019 05:57 PM

The Bug...

Totally agree with the sump and making sure your base is solid and reliable and that supporting mods aren’t skimped on :ok:

scooby doo 16-01-2019 06:08 PM

Steve I forgot about leaving too, I also slowed it down off the second karrsell then straight off the track and run down the road to reduce temps slowly.

It's fitting the right bits and matching components is key which this build has all over it.
Full of gems on it.

Rdlangy1 16-01-2019 09:02 PM

Finally got home and opened the box...

It’s huge! Hahaha

Looks good though!

Bare in mind that although a top mount intercooler works and fits the flat 4 engine nicely, getting air in that scoop and cooling the intake air has always been something Subaru has continually tried to develop and with good reason.

I think I was once told that at over 70/80 mph the scoops on the classics up to the hawk eye's are struggling to funnel a good feed of air through the intercooler (have you noticed how big and re-designed the scoobs turned out on the hatch's and newer...!). A few big pulls on the autobahn at high speed in higher gears and Scotty can tell you the rest...

Yeah my type r shat itself doing 144mph on the Autobhan :-D

Niiiiicccceeeee that :-D

Even the filler, thought it was only us Classic drivers that needed that lol

Rdlangy1 16-01-2019 09:17 PM

The Fibreglass is to re-enforce the brake ducts before spraying.. they aren’t very thick so I want to build up the joints etc :ok:

Wish that was still true in my case  but despite niggles its always made it home from Germany.
And over 100k now....

Frenchie 17-01-2019 08:58 AM

Some nice shiney bits there Ryan. Hopefully see you over here late spring so you can give it a run out on our very quiet, well maintained roads. Also good advice there from Big E.

Bolesroor 17-01-2019 11:35 AM

Awesome Ryan, love the latest addition, looking forward to seeing it on the scoob.

Bolesroor 17-01-2019 12:11 PM

Regarding the comments on power I totally agree with Ryan's comments "it’s about you having fun with what you have and finding your ability limit safely "
I have been very fortunate to have been a passenger with Steve PPP (Brands Hatch), E , Ginola and Scoobyslayer (Evo)'Neil' at the ring and Charlie and Neil again at Bruntingthorpe.
Each car running different power levels from just under 300 to over 450 bhp and for me it's not about the amount of power it's who's behind the wheel that has made each drive such an awesome experience whatever the bhp.
Power doesn't = talent and you need talent, experience and confidence to drive really fast

That's why I drive like Miss Daisy :drive: :D

Seanedg 29-01-2019 08:50 AM

Just catching up on posts, can't wait to see how the front mount changes power, not just the bhp but the torque.

Rdlangy1 29-01-2019 09:09 AM

Be interesting to see - although I doubt the bhp will increase as I am limited by the turbo........................for now

Rdlangy1 16-02-2019 04:12 PM

Small job for the day -

Put the noise maker back on, track system taken off and put in storage...

Also took the time to change up 3 out of the 4 exhaust rubbers for performance stiff ones...

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...a9ff843570.jpg

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...5ec4b3d007.jpg

Old ones were a little soft but not to out of shape...

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...fea9f7dc6c.jpg

I didn’t manage to change the 4th one as it’s the only one held in by a bracket... well the bolts and nuts are 17yrs old and we’re not budging!!

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...6d6e323782.jpg

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...ab70e48aad.jpg

Not matter how much WD40 and soaking they didn’t want to let go so I’ll source a new bracket and bolts and then cut off the offending old number and replace at a later date :ok:

Steve_PPP 17-02-2019 08:47 PM

If you manage to find a place that supplies the bracket holding the last hanger, let me know mate. Mine is bent and twisted to hell as I had the same problem and set about beating the crap out of it until the nut gave up! ;)

SpecB 17-02-2019 08:50 PM

I had a spare one until about a year ago! Had to remove it for the towbar so had it sitting in the garage

Steve_PPP 17-02-2019 08:55 PM

To be fair, it looks a damn simple piece to fabricate if needed. Just easier if somewhere like ICP sells them cheap enough....

scotty 17-02-2019 09:51 PM

If by magic .

asperformance 18-02-2019 08:23 AM

its a captive nut on the outside and a 14mm bolt that runs through from the centre line out over.........
you could unbolt it from the chassis and then you would have more purchase on the bench

Rdlangy1 18-02-2019 08:39 AM

The bolts to the chassis are fairly mullered as well

Don’t suppose you supply a replacement part Alyn? Or fabricate ones?

Ryan

Rdlangy1 28-03-2019 09:35 AM

Well bracket kit has now been ordered from the USA.

Should arrive in 4-5 working days :ok:

As weather is nice this weekend if I am feeling brave I might tackle the u-cradle refurb.........................if I’m feeling brave.

Rdlangy1 03-04-2019 12:23 PM

Bracket kit has arrived from Trump-land...

Now am I brave enough to try and grind the old one off!

Red Baron 03-04-2019 01:07 PM

Are you going to give it a decent coat of paint before you fit it?

Wasn’t planning to as it’s painted black anyway and if I slapped on thick layers of paint I didn’t want to make fitting the hanger difficult and get paint in the screw thread...

scooby doo 03-04-2019 01:09 PM

Least you can crack on with it..
How are you guys uploading pics now ?

Whilst I was under there and had the exhaust off I tried to see why it was knocking on the subframe and the rear diff bolt... shaved a bit off the subframe to stop that banging but things were not quite right...

Then I spotted this.......

Drivers side looking fine and straight...

Passenger side - not so straight!

Guess what I need to get before Germany
