Plasti-kote gloss red aerosol, then sand back the lip to alloy.

I stand corrected

Cheers Scott think I will do that as that heat proof hammerite is rubbish stuff on lid .

A little bit of inner arch rolling.......
The combination of the Prodrive WR Bilsteins, which have short bumpstops, and the 8x18 ET51 225/35x18 mean't that occasionally the tyre would buzz on the inner arch.

This can be seen below.
The problem is the the inner arch has a 'step/lip' that the wider wheel/tyre combination clip's before contact with bumpstop is made.
It is probably perfectly OK if running the 7.5" Prodrive P-WRC wheel.

With a little help from an arch roller this has been smoothed out.

These images probably best shows the 'step/lip', and where tyre contact has occurred :

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v9...psda562e55.jpg

Step removed (the bumpiness is where the underseal moved and in some cases come off. A bit more underseal and smoothrite now required):

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v9...ps94abc3de.jpg

Images from the other side, which better shows the rolling out of the 'Step/Lip', which 'was' just above the wheel arch lip. Also showing the Arch Roller in action :

History Update : The guy I purchased this back from stumbled across some information relating to the guy I sold it too in 2011 (for those that don't know, it had 2 short term owners whilst out of my hands for 18 months).

No big surprises and it stacks up with what I knew and also clears up why it returned to me with a new rear bumper/panel : http://www.corsasport.co.uk/board/vi...=599826&page=1

Too high.
Quality design and manufacturing processes ensure that any 'settle' is designed out as much as possible. Only about 2 - 3mm maximum is expected.

The final design P11-L springs for the P1 are expected from Eibach next week to satisfy current orders plus some stock.

Well after the dreaded tin worm made an appearance on my rear arch I though it was time to start taking off the side skirt's and inspecting the sills and also the underside.

So gingerly, not knowing what to expect I commenced on the drivers side.

Side Skirt removed and 13 years of grime. The last time these were off was 2002/2003 when they were painted :

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v9...pscthzeqyd.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v9...psdn61site.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v9...pssm4r5ldu.jpg

Out with the baby wipes for a wipe down and I was very surprised, and happy, with the condition :
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v9...pszkubyuru.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v9...psr9hqt6th.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v9...psxv90jsqj.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v9...psshiqqlni.jpg

The floorpan then had a quick stiff brushing, and again very please with how it was looking. Tony had often commented during MOT how tidy it was and I was surprised how easy it brushed off considering this is one area I have never touched before :

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v9...ps5kpvgkfi.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v9...psfuut5eyy.jpg

Then a re-application of underseal to make sure it remains water tight and that all damages area's from 'jacking' up/down in the last 13 years are repaired :

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v9...pshnt4rgcg.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v9...psduq5xdpe.jpg

I'll now wait for that to go off prior to the top coat of Silver going on, otherwise it can leach through and contaminate the paint.

The sills have slight paint chippage/rust where there are 2 rectangular sections cut out of the sills. As as result of this I think I will apply some stone guard on the lower section of the sill/flange as the final stage.

BIG"E" 04-07-2015 10:10 AM

Looks really good, fancy doing mine???

Scott.T 04-07-2015 10:22 AM

For reference, this is what I used. A combination of what I already had in the cupboard :
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...6L._SY300_.jpg

http://img.auctiva.com/imgdata/1/1/1...4291395_tp.jpg

I will be continuing the job with the Hammerite version, as this is much easier to apply. More like a thick black paint then sticky Bitumen based gloop.

Steve_PPP 04-07-2015 10:24 AM

That looks nice and clean considering 13 years without the skirts off, must be pleased with that :)

Its a credit to you Scott. You must have been well pleased to see it still that solid. :ok:

scotty 05-07-2015 12:04 AM

That's amazing how clean the sills still after that length of period oh by the way Scott importcarparts stock all the clips you require as a kit .

Rdlangy1 06-07-2015 02:21 PM

Looking a job well done :ok:

Ginola 06-07-2015 03:16 PM

I expect that is a lot cleaner than mine underneath! sills are in surprisingly good order for something that gets driven in the winter in the UK!

Scott.T 10-10-2015 09:20 PM

Time to crack on and do the other side and get it up in the air :
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v9...psu8mua6wc.jpg

Skirts off and a quick wipe down :
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v9...pswl3uj8g2.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v9...pstjpksfgp.jpg

Underside brushed down and a fresh coat of underseal :
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v9...psaphnrqmb.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v9...psxscgplzk.jpg

Gravel rash, which will get sorted in slower time. This is where there are what I can only assume are drainage panels in the skirt's. Hence the paint takes a bit of a beating :

LOL....funny you should say that. The paintshop called today to delay by 2 weeks as they want to be sure they can spend the time it deserves on it.
They are hoping I will push similar work their way so want to be sure it meets my expectations.

I'm sure the bodywork/welding/filling will be fine, but will take a very skilled painter to get the 16 year metallic paint to match like it was always there. They have age to factor, colour/shade, metallic content and grain size, spray direction, lacquer discolour/shading to name but a few to worry about. Oh and will probably need a paint scrapper to take of the years of polish/wax before they attack it with any paint/primer.

That said well worth getting done and taking the plunge so hope it all come out well and can't wait to see the results.

Ginola 23-03-2016 07:34 PM

Will be watching this closely, I really hope it comes out spot on, I know how much of a pain it is when it doesn't!

The hard bit will be resisting the urge to wax it for a few weeks afterwards :)

Scott.T 15-04-2016 09:12 PM

Well after many years of putting it of, this week my car finally entered a bodyshop.
I had planned to get the gravel rash (front splitter/bonnet done) about 5 years ago, but just didn't get round to it.
As some of you now the car ended up sold back in March 2011, only for me to buy it back in October 2012. Unfortunately the temporary owner also didn't get round to painting the car.

I've lived with it for the last 3.5 years, and as with all classics rust was the forcing hand that caused the car to finally enter a bodyshop.

Below are details the reasons and process :

Upon receiving the car back in Oct 2012 rust had started to show on the rear arch. This was only 2 pin-heads that would not be noticed by the casual observer.
By 2014 it had started to grow.

2014 Rust Growth :

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v9...psxzykvtvg.jpg

Other than squirting some rust treatment down the inside of the inner wings/inside boot the rust was not touch. The below shows the growth over 2 years

2016 Rust Growth :

2016 Gravel Rash :

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v9...ps5p8ozfss.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v9...psvixbvumj.jpg

Damaged Bonnet :
(I cut through the laquer trying to sort chip out a while back)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v9...psn6wop30y.jpg

Paintshop Prep :
Bonnet Vents, Scoop, Splitter were all removed and area's cleaned prior to dropping off at the paintshop

Scott.T 15-04-2016 09:22 PM

Images provided from paintshop showing rust repair.

Rust section cut out :
Only a very small amount was cut out, so small infact that from the inside I still can's see it encroaching into the boot area.

A small section also needed cutting and plating on the inner wing, which can just about be seen in the hole below

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v9...pskrobntpv.jpg

Plated and tidied :

scotty 15-04-2016 10:41 PM

Thats not to bad then small little are they doing the other side or was it just that side that was affected .

Scott.T 18-04-2016 10:47 PM

Well after having the car taken away from me for probably only the 3rd time in 13 years, it's back better than ever :

Happy ?. Did they blend the paint into the rear quarter, paint all of rear quarter and blend into rear door or paint whole side of car ?.

Just blended on rear quarter. No blending required into door or top of panel/boot lid.
My paint gauge shows me exactly where and it's very local.
I can detect the blend but then I know exactly where the repair was and being super critical.

I'm very happy with the local nature of the blend as I did not want to start chasing is around the panels.
Small marks on the car in the visinity that only I was aware of after 15 years of cleaning and polishing are still there, so this also confirms how local the work was.

I certainly recommend 'Ridgeway Auto Refinishers' who do all the work for Bartletts Seat and Garage on the Green (both owned by Richard Bartlett). In my opinion his stock is some of the best presented I know, on the 2nd hand market. Having had several cars from them Richard also knows how particular I am ;)

Great stuff and glad your happy, and MUCH better than scab's...

Glad you gave the old girl the love it deserves and you will enjoy it a good few more years.
