Justin 02-03-2011 12:06 AM

Hmm table didn't work very well!

Justin 08-03-2011 11:00 PM

Just to warn anyone that are thinking of spectating at North Weald this weekend, I have just received the competitors info pack and it states that this venue is a non-spectator event, if you don't have a vehicle pass you won't get into the Airfield

DukeBoy 09-03-2011 02:57 PM

Good luck at the coming event Justin

Hopefully see you at afew this year.

Justin 11-03-2011 10:49 PM

Thanks, yep i'm sure North Weald is an exception regarding spactators, probably to do with it being a live Airfield

worzel 11-03-2011 11:51 PM

So Lydden is our closest then, if we can't watch at North Weald.

Any restriction on entry?

Justin 12-03-2011 12:02 AM

I would have thought Lydden is fine since it is setup for spectators?

Looking at the entry form its sprinting in the morning, then a race meet in the afternoon so plenty to see that day

Anger 12-03-2011 12:05 AM

I'll be up for coming down to Lydden to watch and support :)

worzel 12-03-2011 12:05 AM

Yep, same as that :ok:

Had a mixed day today, it rained most of the day - only dry part was practice then the rain started for the 3 timed runs.

Had to adapt to lots of changes to the car and it was also in at the deep end regarding trying to spot the braking and turning points, no cones marking the track edge like I'm used to, just one solitary marker indicating the apex.

Anyway excuses over, this is what really happenned

Practice, OMG how bumpy is this track, the new suspension is way too hard so softened it off a bit

1st timed run and the rain had thrown out all the braking points and I'm still learning the track - lots of over shoots and I set a very average 89s, class leader is a high 84!

2nd timed run didn't last until the 2nd corner, lol cam in too hot dabbed brakes during cornering to tuck her in but just managed leery oversteer to tank slapper to missed gate and no run. In hindsight I should have turned round, gone through the gate and learnt the track more for the remainder of the run, but I was so disappointed I just trudged back to the paddock, lol

Now fastest in class is a 83 and I have one run left, so I did what i should have done on round one and set a decent banker, the lap felt good and I took it easy through where I had the tank slapper - set a low 84 which put me 2nd in class and 7th overall out of 65 competitors IIRC.

So not bad, could have done better.

I must say I was warned that North Weald wasn't the best venue and I tend to agree, the bumps and yumps on the course are more rallycross at times, but what was dissapointing was the track layout, basically a 1/4 mile with a chicane in the middle, then one fast corner - the rest of the track was 4 1/8th mile straights with a hairpin at each end.

Big power track and there was some big power there today!!

Great thing is that everyone is friendly, even the rivals, was a good day out, not a bad shakedown :)

Justin 13-03-2011 09:16 PM

Regarding Lydden support would be most welcome, it seems you get a support vehicle pass and my wife and kids probably won't be attending so if that is the case one of you attending can park in the paddock in return for storing a laptop / clothes a few tools etc in your boot :)

Sounds good will let you know asap

worzel 14-03-2011 10:26 AM

Ditto!

rossmarts 14-03-2011 05:53 PM

Sounds like a good enough day with a good result :ok:. NW is an horrific surface, plus there is often a large amount of crap on the ground waiting to give you a puncture as there are usually jumble sale/markets there when there isnt a sprint.

The layout is fairly indicative of most airfield sprints although is probably the least imaginative but not by much. Debden is a bit trickier, but the track stuff is usually the best.

Justin 14-03-2011 11:33 PM

Oh yes there was tons of crap in the paddock, broken glass, wire coathangers etc plenty of stuff for my kids to play with, lol

Nige 15-03-2011 02:18 AM

Sounds like you made the most of it mate. If im off for the Lyden round i will be there to see you do your stuff. :drive:

Justin 21-03-2011 01:43 PM

I have sent off my form for Lydden, not had confirmation yet.

I am also doing a trackday at Hullavington airfield this Friday to get used to the new suspension setup

Justin 05-04-2011 11:40 AM

OK, got all details through for Lydden, good new is I'm in, bad news is I'm the only one in A5 - my class :(

So I will just have to try for FTD and try to beat the others in classes A,B and C

Dukeboy and CJ I have your free entry and Paddock parking for you, Dukeboy can you PM me your Email addy and I will send the details over

DukeBoy 05-04-2011 02:02 PM

Cheers Justin

Had a good day today :)

Never been to Lydden before and its the first time I've had to put in a timed lap of a proper circuit - I've done loads of trackdays at various circuits but never competed at one. No vast amounts of runoff at all and plenty to hit today so for the practise run I took it fairly easy for the first lap to get my bearings, decided to push it a bit for the 2nd lap and ended up on the grass missing the tyre wall by a few feet before finally gathering it all up, phew!

1st timed run and I put in a decent banker, car felt good and I knew there was a bit more to come. Did an 83.1 but had nobody in my class to compare to so looking at classes A,B and C I was 2nd, behind a Caterham R400.

2nd timed run felt really good nailed most of the course and knocked a second off my time, down to a 82.1 but couldn't beat the R400.

Won my class (wasn't hard really!) and 8th overall, the other 6 ahead of me were class D - racing cars, to put it into perspective FTD was a 71.8 !!

Thanks to Dukeboy and CJ who helped on the day, I needed it too because I am useless in the early mornings!

Hongkongfooi 09-04-2011 08:52 PM

well done there fella

DukeBoy 09-04-2011 10:55 PM

No problem Justin it was a good day, well done.

What was the racing in the afternoon like?

Justin 10-04-2011 07:38 AM

I stayed and watched (IIRC) John Craig in his Impreza (JGM mapped his car) for his 1st race and he came 2nd to a manic mini, racing was excellent, the lead changed hands pretty much every lap in the 15 min race.

Justin 26-04-2011 09:37 PM

Just a quick note to say I didn't go to North Weald on the 24th doubt I'll compete there again until the potholes have been sorted tbh.

Curborough has been cancelled due to lack of numbers and Honington clashes with my daughters dance performance at Epsom playhouse, so next sprint is Snetterton on the 28th May.

However before that I'll be at Elvinton on the 22nd May for the Scooby Shootout

Justin 25-05-2011 02:30 PM

ScoobyShootout went very well indeed :)

Snetterton this weekend, I didn't realise its so close to Centeparcs so the family are off on a long weekend there and doing Snet on Sunday 29th.

Its a bit of a trek but I have one spare entry pass if anyone wants to come along

DukeBoy 26-05-2011 01:14 PM

Shame I can't do this weekend, good luck anyway Justin!!!

Justin 29-05-2011 10:14 PM

Well I had a great day today

Snetterton 100 circuit is brand new and is the new infield section so that the main track combined with this is 3 miles

The 100 circuit is 1 mile long and very quick indeed, I was close to the limiter in 5th on the main straight and its done twice in a 1.75 lap sprint. Best time was 98.5 seconds which yet again was fastest in a class of one, a shame really that there is no competition but I did beat the only other Impreza there by 2 seconds - he was in mod prod and told me he was running 480HP and was under 1000kg, which I doubt very much - why people say these things is beyond me.

Logan was there in an Evo7 in mod prod, what a car, so well prepped and running the dunlop x22's the Banana ran at sso and at Harewood Logan says he doesn't get on with them but the times suggest otherwise -a late 94 was an awesome time. My other benchmark the caterham from Lydden also banged in a mid 94 which confirmed something today - soft kumhos are too soft for the Impreza, they over heated no matter the pressures and after 2 meets have gone off. I still enjoyed the day, I managed to catch the biggest oversteer personally ever and keepit on track - I was over 90 degrees at one point and saved it :D. My mate Stu missed that one but he did get some pics and one vid which he promises to upload at some point.

The kids loved it and Snetterton is a great venue. Again the paddock friendlyness is great and being a british sprint round, a lot of cream from the sprint circus were there, awesome machinery today

Miniman 30-05-2011 10:51 PM

As promised :-)

Youtube vid of Justin's car

My Son and I joined Justin (+ family) at Snetterton. I knew it was a mixed event with a Sprint going on and full circuit racing. Overall a good day and we visited the spectator banking for both the Sprint and circuit racing so saw quite a bit of action. So we saw lots of action all round. Not been to Snetterton for years and I think Jonathon Palmer's group has done a great job on modernising it. And the use of the 100 and 200 circuits made it a good day out.

We did miss some of Justin's more adventurous action :-) But caught most runs from some vantage point. A lot of cars were TWO or FWO at some point. I found the format strange as it was literally a single run. I've seen drag racing and circuit, so was surprised that this is much more like drag racing with corners as you cannot bring the car up to speed/temperature or spend a few laps getting the so-and-so corner right.

Forgive the missing sound on the video, it was really windy and the buffeting on the mic was bad, so I got rid of the audio altogether, but you could really hear the sweet scooby burble and especially the dump valve, coming off throttle. Apart from some of the big V8's there wasn't much else sounding as good as Justin's scooby.
