Looking for some advice on R32's

Morning chaps,

Been on a car hunt this weekend,
Viewed a couple of Scoobs and none where up to scratch :(
This led on to me viewing two other cars Focus ST-3 (previously owned a ST-2) or something else that was off my radar Mk5 Golf R32 in manual.
but seeing as 4wd, 5dr and 250hp ticked my boxes.

Now ive had zero dealings with these so my knowledge on them is very poor,
And i know couple of you guys have owned one, so i thought id ask for a some thoughts, other than low mpg is there anything to watch out for?
l'll be doing some google research today i guess,

Regards benji

Heavy comes to mind for a car of its size

Friend of mine has one with the DSG Box and the upgraded Recarros. He's got an aftermarket exhaust on it and it sounds really good. As an all round package that can do most things pretty well and a decent build quality it aint bad. I think they may have a few electrical gremlins, my mates coil pack went and another friend with the TT 3.2 had the same thing go twice. Being a hatch pretty practical. Be on the classic appreciating list soon if not already. I think they are in the higher tax bracket + they wont be amazing on fuel, but what in this category is. I often thought if i needed a one car strategy I may go R32 5 door, could probably get the family in it just and still have some fun.

Thanks nick , nice to here a outsiders view, did a google search and nothing came back to scary . Timing chain guides were mentioned but seems not to Be that heard off ,
The car I'm looking at is a Feb 06 build so just inside the tax bracket £305. Low mpg is to be expected. It has been fitted with a hand built resonated cat back and panel filter so will howl I expect.
It's needed for me and the boy couple times a week so decided on a 5dr.
Insurance is £28 More over the ep3 .

From my experience in an r32, it was a solid machine and the VR6 is smooth plus sounds really nice. However, the performance is lackluster so moved on...

Also Richard sold a R32 back in June, you could give him a shout too maybe?

The performance is the little on low side , I've seen(web) that people use sports cats and remap aim up with 270hp so not to bad. It's the reliability with some performance that catches my eye.

Also can't find a manual in my price bracket

They are pretty rare as a manual mines one of about 80 UK cars (50 if you don't include facelift)

555_Si 19-12-2017 06:39 PM

Had a modified mk iv r32.
4wd makes car heavy and without an upgraded 4wd controller they tend to feel very front wheel drivey.
Power feels lacking a bit, got mine to 288bhp which as about as much as you’ll see without forced induction.
However, i have driven a 500+bhp one with said 4wd controller upgrade and a small suspension tweaks and the chassis handled it very well.
Timing chain issues are very rare, but if they go it is expensive, new chains and guides don’t always solve the problem. Mine had new engine under warranty at 50k miles, but i have only heard of 3 cars having the issue out of hundreds.
I do miss mine a lot, but they are a completely different car to a scoob, hence why i had both. Really you beed to get in and drive one.
