World Rallycross Championship R9 – Loheac

After getting soaked at Lydden a couple of weeks ago, the South of France was a much more pleasant venue for spectating rallycross!

Pictures were taken, here are some of my faves…

WTCC Champion Yvan Muller made his rallycross debut at Loheac. He was fast (and rather sideways) but not consistent enough to make the finals.

Timmy Hansen was the man to beat. He dominated the first day and even Petter Solberg seemed to be struggling to match his pace.

There were a number of local drivers entered, but the most impressive drive came from Jean-Baptiste Dubourg.

Liam Doran was one of only two UK entrants at Loheac this year. He was very quick, but mechanical issues put him out of the running.

Russian driver Igor Sanin was hugely impressive in the Super 1600’s, though an unlucky puncture put him out of contention in the final.

Solberg was fast, but in trying to keep up with Hansen he wore his tyres out. He managed to hang on to claim second overall in the final.

After setting the early pace Timmy Hansen went on to take a comfortable win in the final, beating Solberg by over three seconds.

Hansen’s victory was hugely impressive, but I personally thought the best drive of the weekend was from Jean-Baptiste Dubourg. He had a poor start in the final, but he got up to third and, if he hadn’t been held up by Solberg, I wonder if he might have challenged for the lead. Needless to say, his podium went down well with the locals!

Absolutely love the atmosphere at Loheac. This was my third visit there and, as with previous years, it was another fantastic weekend.

From Calais. We got a crossing late Friday night then drove down through France during the night to arrive at the circuit around 5 AM. It was around 6 hours driving (I missed a lot of it though as I was dozing!) but, if we do it again, we won't do it that way.

It was around 7 hours coming back, but it was a much more relaxed drive back to Calais and we made a few food stops en route.

It's not a big jump, but its enough to get four wheels off the ground! There is a tight chicane immediately after the jump, so it's interesting watching how drivers set the cars up for the corner as they come over the jump.

Ouch, 6 hours. You can get to the Ring in 2 hours less ;)

Should really get to more of these as I could get free entry all hospitality singing and dancing tickets for the whole championship throughout Europe from a buddy of mine, Andy Coley who commentates for Motors TV and Eurosport.

Do it! The Lydden round is brilliant, but the atmosphere at the European rounds is even better.
