Yokohama W-drive of the 4x4 which are a snow/winter tyre.

Steve_PPP 20-11-2015 08:28 AM

Summer for me too - couldn't justify a 3rd set of wheels to run winters when i've got road and track rubber already.

Managed on my vredestein sessantas in 4" of snow before, it's ice thats the problem...

Ginola 20-11-2015 09:09 AM

Winter tyres won't help with ice either

They definitely do make a difference to starting and stopping on ice.

In the first winter with the FSTi I was on Vredestein Sessantas and they were fine, including in snow, but moving to winter tyres has shown me the value of them.

scooby doo 20-11-2015 01:38 PM

Mine won't see winter lol

scotty 20-11-2015 01:57 PM

Winter tyres for down south thats very funny seen snow once or maybe twice in 10 years of living in kent .

Winter tyres and "snow" tyres are totally different animals..........

as above in cold, frosty, icy weather they make a world of difference

Ha ha what a lot,it's more being able to stop when the old dears pull out in front of you or stop at the bottom of Icie hills as they do,my daily is a bmw and without winter tyres it is about as much use as an ashtray on a motorbike when roads get slippy.was going to go cross climate but there not making 18inch till next summer so got me some 17s see what I can find,as its four wheel drive and got clearance thought might as well as I have to go up suffolk regularly and out where I work a Land Rover would be better

Pirate1066 20-11-2015 05:26 PM

As to winter snow etc since working out Holmbury st Mary way the last 5 years 3 of them have been bad over a foot of snow one year and another minus 13 for a week

555_Si 20-11-2015 10:00 PM

My summer tyres are doing just fine.
They managed to get me to the MOT station and back 2 weeks ago.......and it was RAINING :(:(:(:(

Banstead Stig 21-11-2015 09:54 AM

I was a naysayer until I bought a set and saw the benefits.

Admittedly, until today, it's been too warm so far this Autumn to really justify changing.

My summer tyres are pretty well worn, so I've just swapped wheels this morning (whilst it snowed).

Temps are rising again from Tuesday, but should still be cool enough for it to make sense... we'll see!

alfa male 21-11-2015 04:46 PM

Aren't these winter tyres supposed to crap in the rain? Which most of our winter weather is in Hastings.

Banstead Stig 21-11-2015 04:56 PM

No. The point of winter tyres is to operate better at lower temperatures, so like any tyre selection, some are better in the wet than others.

It would be wrong to say all winter tyres are crap in the wet, same as it would to say all summer tyres are crap in the wet.

Pirate1066 21-11-2015 06:17 PM

Look up the new eu labels very interesting re wet grip, look up what your running at presence and compare also re winter tyres look at the stopping distance in the wet and cold up to 2 car length differences,or more. No brainer
I was on the fence till I drove a bmw with winters on that before I could get out the car park, with winters I was over taking the tits in four wheel drives because on normal tyres they have no more grip then two wheel drive

Pirate1066 21-11-2015 06:20 PM

Some of the Michelin winters are rated at b for rain grip cold weather same as good summers,if you have two sets both sets last twice as long, another tip don't buy second hand if over 6 years old as silicon content hardens and under 4mm trend as winters are deeper tread and need more of it to work properly.
I've found this out the hard way,.
