so I put old ones back and still wont fire up... so what the hell have I done...???

Red Baron 13-02-2014 07:40 PM

I'm sure you haven't but you did put the right leads on the right plugs didn't you?

Shane

Domo2106 13-02-2014 07:45 PM

Is there a spark at the plug ?

EXEVO3 13-02-2014 08:08 PM

iv not checked for a spark....as the old ones were working...I cant get my head around what would change....the leads have a black plug for the coilpack toward front of car and a white plug towards back of car perside its spun me out...cars stuck at work..and I cant think what would do this...

C. J. 13-02-2014 08:11 PM

I retract that comment then lol, glad you've sorted that problem even if the original problem hasn't been fixed.

Domo2106 14-02-2014 01:54 PM

I'd try a new set of leads to see if that helps

scooby doo 14-02-2014 02:01 PM

No leads on this year wrx,
Things to think,
Maff,
Boost leak,
Fuel cut,
Induction kit clean,

C. J. 14-02-2014 02:09 PM

you have soaked the plugs in petrol so wont be helping .
all ways remember" black is back "

I replaced maf November
100% nothing like fuel cut...
Induction is clean.

thing is I was getting a flat spot that started to get worst under boost around 3500rpm 4000rpm
Changed plugs and noticed 2x coilpacks had cracks and signs of melting...so clearly that was my problem
now on coilpacks with no cracks plus I taped them under rubber boot..and the car is worst...missing on and off you can feel the spark come and go almost...
also smell of fuel??

C. J. 14-02-2014 02:17 PM

take tap off , there is no need for it

EXEVO3 14-02-2014 03:39 PM

iv been reading on scabbynet....and this seems to be kinda common but with no real answer...
im going to check gaps on plugs and clean maf anyway...

is there a way with a metre I could check each pack??

Banstead Stig 14-02-2014 05:06 PM

Aren't the MAFs on classics quite fragile? Cleaning it can goose it I thought.

EXEVO3 14-02-2014 05:52 PM

on the drive home (10mins) the car ran ok...till just before my house then a little miss... so its when it gets hot it starts to run lumpy(misfire)...does this shed some light??

scooby doo 14-02-2014 10:27 PM

Coil packs how tight did you do them up you can over tight them, mate don't give up after owing now evo and all sorts of scoobs I still think the early classic is awesome and because of it's price and rawness

EXEVO3 15-02-2014 01:13 PM

have a coil pack tester.. voltage and arc... found passenger side front port was my problem...checked coil pack and broken up and messed plug up to...so changed plug and used 1 of the old coilpacks that wasn't cracked...car ran fine tested voltage and arc and was same as the others...raised rpm rechecked all was good... drove home car ran perfect till just before my house lol!!! iv got to laugh or ill go metal!!!....started missing again... so I know its that coilpack... I just don't have another to swap... there so expensive new... total pain in the ****!!:(

Mortster 15-02-2014 02:43 PM

This should only be a temporary fix to help packs with cracks.
It's quite common for the pre-facelift to suffer spark issues after changing plug's because the weakened packs get damaged further when re-fitted. And many don't know that there are cracks under the rubber boots.

Coilpacks were one of the reasons I stopped doing the chips. People were quite happy to pay £150-£200 for a chip/ECU upgrade, but were not too happy when they also found they had to pay £250 for a set of coilpacks.
I only ever had 1 guy send the chip back for a refund, I reckon because he couldn't afford to sort the coilpacks.
As the cars got older this became more and more a problem.

I must have hundreds of emails trying to convince people it was their coilpacks and not the chip causing the problems. When they eventually swapped to new coilpacks they were eating humble pie.........the big problem was that before the chip they ran fine, but the extra boost provided by the chip would blow the weak spark out.

scooby doo 15-02-2014 04:54 PM

i did the newage conversion on one of my old wrx's easy to do.

I can see how this would happen...I bet it was a drama...the coilpack fault almost comes across as a boost problem at first...flat spot ect....
