Resting Heart rate at 92bpm. Normal.?.

Anyone in the medical profession ?. Nige ?.

I like to think I keep myself reasonably fit and do the gym about 3 times a week, eat sensibly but not fanatically.

But notice my resting heart rate seems to sit on average at about 92bpm.

From everything I have read my resting heart rate should be about 60bpm, and possibly less considering my gym activities.

Whats your resting heart rates ?

Is this normal ?. Should I go see my GP ?. Will I make it to Xmas ? :(

worzel 06-12-2010 02:35 PM

Rob, is your life insurance up to date?

I think I am right in saying (Nige will correct if I'm wrong), that anywhere between 60 & 80 is good, so at rest, I would say that is fairly bleedin high. My Grandson (who is only 5) picked up a virus a couple of weeks back and he had a resting heartbeat of 104 (IIRC) so it could be something like this, he has been put on a short term inhaler, which is sorting things out nicely.

IMHO it's worth a call at the very least to your Doctor and let them make the call!

..... but I'm sure they'll get you in for an highly intrusive and painful internal examination........ if Nige manages to speak to them first that is

49 bpm last time i had an ecg.
though the nurse did go and ask a doctor if this was ok as she thought it was slow.

Not really, i'm a well stressed nutcase most of the time.

worzel 06-12-2010 03:03 PM

That's impressive control then mate :ok:

RobEvo5 06-12-2010 03:16 PM

Oh! Begins to confirm what I feared - I did have an appointment with my GP this morning that the missus booked, but I cancelled it partially because I think I might be in denial but also because I want to be sure Its not normal before I potentially make myself look like a time wasting twat to my GP.

My tick over is running even higher this afternoon at about 100bpm. Which is probably because I'm stressing about my heartrate now :D

XRS 06-12-2010 04:10 PM

Does sound a bit high. I'm another with a resting pulse rate in the 40s or 50s, presumably because I swim a bit. Normal is around 60s AFAIK.

Best to get it sorted - at least you'll know what's what.

MIDLIFE 06-12-2010 04:10 PM

I think you should get it checked out.
what are you checking it on? I had a wrist monitor that was giving all sorts of inaccurate readings. Around the 60 mark is normal lower if you are very fit.

andy-m 06-12-2010 04:12 PM

70 is average. (I used to be a first-aider)
its probably nothing major, but, you only get one heart. if it stops working, game over. and if it stops working while your driving, other road users, pedestrians and passengers are at risk.

When it comes to a vital organ like the heart, looking like a timewasting twat to your GP is a small price to pay when compared to the possible alternative.
Plus, I very much doubt your GP would think your a timewaster given that its your heart that you are concerned with.
Even if he did think your a twat, doctor-patient confidentiality means he cant tell anyone that !

Go see your GP sooner rather than later please.

kartingsteve 06-12-2010 04:20 PM

My rest rate is only in the high 40's too and I'n not that fit

andy-m 06-12-2010 04:45 PM

From Wikipedia:-

Resting heart rate (HRrest) is a person's heart rate when they are at rest: awake but lying down, and not having immediately exerted themselves. Typical healthy resting heart rate in adults is 60–80 bpm [2], with rates below 60 bpm referred to as bradycardia and rates above 100 bpm referred to as tachycardia. Note however that conditioned athletes often have resting heart rates below 60 bpm. Cyclist Lance Armstrong had a resting HR around 32 bpm, and it is not unusual for people doing regular exercise to get below 50 bpm. Other cyclists like Miguel Indurain[3] and Alberto Contador[citation needed] have reported resting heart rates in the mid-20s, with American marathoner Ryan Hall at 29.

I go to the gym 3 times or sometimes more a week so should consider myself reasonably fit - 50% of my workout is cardio and always notice my heart rate seems very high when doing cardio. Although I've been doing the gym for well over 2 years I still find it hard to do any kind of indurance cardio work out. And only recently focused my attention to my resting heart rate.

I was checking it myself against a stop watch intially. But today I've been using a POLAR proffesional heart rate monitor. Over 2 different 1 hour period's its averaging 92bpm.

If I was fat and unfit 92bpm would appear to be on the high side, but considering I should be fit and don't consider myself over weight leads me to my concern.

Scott.T 06-12-2010 05:30 PM

Rob, It's your heart telling you to go buy a new car........that'll calm you down.

BIG"E" 06-12-2010 06:15 PM

Rob I would have a little chat with the doctor.

It does not matter how many times a week you go to the gym although its good for your heart. The Heart is just a muscle that needs to exercised.

Normally the fitter you are the slower your heart rate.

Get checked out mate dont want to worry you I had my first heart attack @43, 103 years ago.

BIG"E" 06-12-2010 06:42 PM

Just found this:

Age Normal heart rate (beats per minute)[1] newborn 120-160 0-5 months 90-140 6-12 months 80-140 1-3 years 80-130 3-5 years 80-120 6-10 years 70-110 11-14 years 60-105 14+ years 60-100

DukeBoy 06-12-2010 07:04 PM

I normally sit around the mid to high 40's

scooby999 06-12-2010 07:24 PM

I work for the ambulance service and i would think thats abit on the high side ,but i think Nige is better qualified than me so he will give you a better answer.
But in the meantime I would make an appt at the doctors ,better safe than sorry !!!

Red Baron 06-12-2010 08:56 PM

Rob

Mines around the 60 mark and I'm an unfit lard arse and back when I used to do spinning classes it didn't peak much above 130 so I think it's worth getting it checked out. Might just be that you have slightly higher than average tickover but there's certainly no harm in getting it checked out.

Scott.T 06-12-2010 09:18 PM

Mine is around 70 on my highly accurate android ap.

RobEvo5 07-12-2010 09:38 AM

Thanks all beginning to sound like I am officially F*cked - Oh well something else to worry about now and stress about. Guess I better get myself an appointment at some point.

Done some research myself and for my age my max heart rate should be 180bpm. = i.e running at 100%

When training 80% of max heart rate is classified as pretty high intensity training akin to a hard jog or run.

On the treadmill last night I was seeing 145bpm (80%) just on a 15 degree incline walk, but worse still then followed onto a 10 min jog and was sitting constantly at 185bpm. which is over maximum...

It goes along way to explain why I find indurance training tough. I've been running anorobic when I'm jogging. I hate to imagine what my heart rate has got up to when I'm been sprinting for 2 minutes.

My heartrate would appear to be running high across the range.

WRX_Paul 07-12-2010 12:03 PM

Have you swapped your Heart for a 'Hybrid' version?

RobEvo5 09-12-2010 10:28 AM

Went to see my GP today, probably the 5th time I've ever gone to a GP in my life.!

I've got a full MOT coming, blood test, ECG at survey, and another at Hospital. She didn't take long to get the appointments sorted when she was getting resting rates of 104 and then told her both my parents had heart attacks fairly early in life.

Hopefully all is well and I'm just a freak of nature or something, but glad I went and wasn't made to feel I was wasting there time.

It might be nothing, but does go to show testing your resting heart rate is a very simple test that everyone should do once in a while. If it were not for the gym and generally being concious of my fitness levels these days, I would have been blissfully unaware of a possible problem.

worzel 09-12-2010 11:25 AM

Glad you are getting it sorted quickly matey. :ok:

admin 09-12-2010 12:45 PM

Scott.T 09-12-2010 01:04 PM

Well done for going Rob,
