Gearbox whining in 1st gear

Hi I'm new to this so please excuse me if I'm wrong...
My 1999 impreza turbo is quite notchy to get into 1st gear, it's whines when driving in 1st gear and the whining stops when I press the clutch to change into 2nd gear and then from then on 2nd to 5th is fine has anybody had this problem at all. Any help would be brilliant
Thanks

First job would be to try a gearbox oil change, the redline shock proof is known for quieting boxes down.

I changed the fluid but unfortunately it didn't help, do you know anyone in southeast who has used a gearbox specialist ?

Email has been sent to bexhill gearboxes, I've asked for a removal of existing gearbox and replace with recon box plus new clutch I'll let u know the damage soon.

Which box is it on the car? If its a UK 5 Speed these are ten a penny from the breakers, might be worth just swapping it out and saving the expense of a recon.

We got a gearbox done up a while ago. It's cheaper and (on that occasion) would have been a better job just to buy another one.

I have the same problem except mine is an jdm 5 speed

I have a very notchy and hard to select first gear when the car/box is cold. Ive changed the oil which has made it a tad better but I expect it to only last a few more years before it starts getting on my nerves and the noises begin. The rest of the gears a fine.

Mine too is a JDM, are the UK boxes different in anyway?
If I need a new box anytime soon I'd look for a six speed set up.
