SES - Wales Road Trip / Colin McRae Weekender - July 2015

Currently planning a road trip that will include 2 overnight stays.

Initial plan is :

Friday 17th July : Early leave and head up to Brecon/Talgarth area (accommodation would be found in this area) and enjoy the Brecon and Black Mountains.
The map of the Brecon area below is based on roads that I know. Some of which I have purposely diverted over too ;) and have driven more then once :

South Wales

Saturday 18th July : Early start and head up through Mid Wales to hook up with the McRae Weekender : http://www.seriesmcrae.com/

Various routes to drive in this area, perhaps including the EVO Triangle :

Route to EVO Triangle

Sunday 19th July : McRae Weekender show.

We would then head back via Telford......

The above is the initial plan, but the route may be subject to change as we gather more information.

Hopefully I'll be coming along on this too as I love this part of the world, will see if the wife fancies it (and whether nanna fancies looking after baby for the weekend!)

Premier Inn at Merthyr is £35 if booked now. The towns not great but the Hotel in on the ring road, and a good location to get to/from.

As for North Wales, I'm open to suggestions as everywhere is either expensive or full.
The Premier Inn in Llandudno want £80 per room (which could be split between 2). Breakfast is Extra.

Anger 09-01-2015 11:05 PM

Will be up in North Wales for the McRae gathering weekend on the 18th

Rdlangy1 10-01-2015 07:06 AM

That premier inn for £35 seems cool!
I'm happy to follow suit with what others want - just let me know when and where I need to book! Ha ha

Rdlangy1 16-01-2015 08:28 AM

Any news on this yet gents?

Scott.T 16-01-2015 08:31 AM

Still in the planning mate. Trying to find a better hotel in North Wales.

Rdlangy1 16-01-2015 08:35 AM

:ok:

SeanMcKnetic 16-01-2015 10:32 PM

Make sure you have your fuel stop options mapped out in advance, especially if you're strictly V Power only.

Wales is my home turf and I've been caught out many many times in that respect esp in mid Wales.

Rdlangy1 17-01-2015 08:29 AM

Good advise bud! Thanks :ok:

Scott.T 17-01-2015 10:49 AM

North Wales is proving difficult to get Hotels/B&B in the area.
The other option is that we head towards North Wales first, but stop/overnight further out.
Then drive into the hills for the morning and then head south later.
Getting accommodation in the South is easier.

Doing it that way we are also a lot closer to home for when we are done with driving the hills/valley's and want to head back.

Rdlangy1 17-01-2015 11:02 AM

Good plan :ok:

Scott.T 24-01-2015 07:16 PM

What do people think about shifting the Wales trip 1-week and combining it with attending this : http://www.seriesmcrae.com/

I have done a trawl of some of the hotels recommended and prices are very high in that area.
However, if we drop south a bit and stay at Owsestry, the price is almost halved. This is approx. 1 hour from the showground (dependent on route ;)).

I have emailed the organisers to see if we can fit in with their itinerary as much as possible.

We could still work this as planned, heading up to Brecon Friday 17th, then head North on 18th.

Your thoughts........

Rdlangy1 24-01-2015 07:47 PM

Suits me fine...happy just to be tagging along :ok:

555_Si 24-01-2015 10:07 PM

Looks good

scotty 24-01-2015 11:58 PM

I'm going to the McRae weekend meeting with a few boys down south on route to it so might see you there .

Scott.T 25-01-2015 10:20 AM

O.K thread title now updated to include the McRae Weekender and the date shifted by 1 week to 17th - 19th July.

I am in talks with the organisers and they may have found us a Pub/B&B with rooms in the area with private car park etc...etc.....

I will keep you posted.

Hongkongfooi 25-01-2015 01:59 PM

Would love to stay here http://www.groesinn.com/the-inn/

Hi all, Have any of you ever been up to North Wales before and experienced some of the roads here? Evo triangle is great with some long sweeping bends and great scenery.
I'm sure you will all enjoy the Tour I am planning :-D

Where are you all starting your trip from?
Kind regards
Justin

Hi Justin, thanks for popping along.

Scotty as you may of guessed, is from the land of the 'Man Skirt'. But he used to be local, so he hangs about on here......we haven't dis-owned him....'yet'......

Most of us will be travelling up from Kent/Sussex/Surrey, hence the route into Wales from the South.

I've driven South Wales a few times, but not been up t'north since I were a boy (so about 30 years ago.....and yes I'm being honest with the age unlike some on here ;))

Really looking forward to having this as part of our 2015 Calendar.

Thanks for signing up Justin, I've fast-tracked your account through so you have access to all areas, PMs etc.

As Scott says, we're mostly from Sussex/Surrey/Kent. I'm a newbie when it comes to North Wales roads, but know a lot of the South Wales roads pretty well (valleys, Brecon Beacons and up to Llangurig area) as I've been going to the WRC for the last 15 years. Haven't done any of the newer stages further north though (yet....). I haven't been able to commit to this yet but hope to come along!

Hi all, Thanks for the welcome and allowing me onto your forum 8-)

Scotland, fair play to you and well done for keeping in contact with the rest of the members down south.
Cheers for sorting out my account here and you will have to come up to this years Wales Rally GB and see what our forests are like.
The stages that Colin used in 1995 are literally about 6 miles away and I have driven that last mile of the final stage many times. Once in my Legacy, but going alot slower and no crowds!

I did stick my phone on the dash and video it so have a nose at this clip and see if any of you recognise the final section :-D

Waiting to see what final numbers are then hope Cos140 can sort out the North Wales part of the accommodation.

Rdlangy1 12-02-2015 07:44 AM

suuuuuper :ok:

Scott.T 26-02-2015 06:25 PM

Any more interest for this event

Steve_PPP 26-02-2015 10:58 PM

Yes :) but I can't confirm yet as its still 6 months away and no idea what funds I'll have spare after Germany and the ongoing house refurb.

scooberblue 12-03-2015 12:42 AM

Il come. Sounds like a good weekend

Security_Paul 03-04-2015 08:51 AM

If we can gather a rough idea of pricing, I should be able to come along to this as well.

Due to low numbers the attendance at this event, by SES in an official capacity, is under review for cancellation.
Those wanting to attend may be advised to make their own travel/accommodation arrangements.

Rdlangy1 18-04-2015 07:42 AM

Ahhh that's a bummer - let me know if it does get cancelled so I can reclaim my days off work :ok:

It's a shame that :-(

That's a shame, I was looking forward to my first SES trip :tumbleweed:

Security_Paul 24-04-2015 08:20 AM

Might be able to pull more numbers if we've got an overall idea on pricing. Got a few track days around then so need to know how much it'll be before I can give a sure answer.

How many people are you looking to get for it?

Rdlangy1 29-04-2015 08:08 AM

So is this def cancelled in official SES capacity?

Scott.T 29-04-2015 06:33 PM

Yes afraid so.
The low numbers don't justify the effort required to make/support all the planning.
If people still wish to go they should make their own arrangements.

We do however have the Beaulieu event 2 weeks later and an 'overnighter' in the new forest could be an option.

Rdlangy1 29-04-2015 06:51 PM

Already signed up for beaulieu :ok:

No prob - just asking coz of un booking the time off work - cheers Scott

Ryan
