Engine smoking

hi i have recently had my engine reconditioned and have been running it in, it is pretty much now run in and i gave it a good boot full tonight taking it up to 6500 revs which i was told to do going up in stages, when i stopped there was smoke coming from the engine and a burning smell, any ideas on what this could have been?

Nige 22-11-2011 12:31 AM

Sounds normal Scoob. Its maybe down to getting everything up to temp after a good kicking. It could just be cat burning off after yor running in period. Talk to your builder buddy.:yeah:

Juppy 22-11-2011 07:01 AM

i have a decat, ok will do thanks

Steve_PPP 22-11-2011 08:50 AM

Could you see where it was coming from in the bay?

Heatwrap will smoke (and stink) when new but if you've done some miles running in already that would have gone by now!

Tyler 22-11-2011 09:40 AM

Was it a oil burning smell??? If so and you have wrapped exhaust be careful bud.....

Check things like the oil return pipe and the oil feed pipe to the turbo....

Check all pipes that are near or above exhaust system

Anger 22-11-2011 11:52 AM

If anything was loose it would deffo leak now its going boost, could still be burning stuff off tho now with the extra heat

Skullfudge 22-11-2011 12:39 PM

New parts will often smell when first giving it a bit.

I have had that happen to me several times.

Cleaning agents on the engine also develop smoke and smells ? I have smoke pouring out the bonnet joints and scoop after a good clean.

Crowman has horrible smells and acrid smoke pouring out of him after a bloody cheese sandwich

Jolly Green Monster 22-11-2011 01:37 PM

Has the reason for the first failure been estabilshed and rectified?

Has the car been mapped for the new build and decat etc?

Was the smoke from the engine bay or the exhaust?

What oil is the car on and what oil was it run in on?

big end bearings went and was sorted out at API, it was dark last night so i couldn't see where it was coming from, i think i may have topped the oil up a little high, its going in for an oil change tomorrow, API recommended 10w40/50 or 15w40/50 semi or fully synthetic of any brand, i used 10w40 semi synthetic, the car has not been re-mapped apart from the decat it is totally standard

BIG"E" 22-11-2011 04:35 PM

Who ever replaces the oil should measure it out,

the capacity, is 4.5 ltrs. :yeah:

IIRC.

Should be mapped for decat imho.

I would recommend 15w50 motul 300v. You know the best way to do the oil change?

havent got a clue thats why i dont do it, the decat was put on before they rebuilt the engine, i have taken it out today without giving it a boot full and its still smoking, its located at the front left of the engine just above the belly pan as you open the bonnet, its too far down for me to get a good look from above, where do you get that oil from? :brickwall:

Jolly Green Monster 22-11-2011 05:45 PM

AS performance.

But dont just let any old workshop do it as they wont know either.

Get it looked at and check the oil level before you move it

Sounds like a rocker cover gasket leak on the o/s, its probably dripping onto the headers.

sorry im not that clued up on it, what does that mean?

andy-m 22-11-2011 06:45 PM

o/s rocker cover gasket is the plate on the drivers side of the engine that covers the cams. look down between the airbox and the engine and its the big metal plate on the side of the engine which has holes where the spark plugs & coil packs or HT leads go in to the head. When that gasket leaks, it drips oil on the the exhaust header just before the up pipe going to the turbo. when the pipe gets hot (Hoter if you've booted it) that oil will smoke as it burns off. mine does it atm and i got a new gasket ready to fit at the weekend

Juppy 22-11-2011 06:59 PM

that is where it seems to be coming from, i will get them to check it out tomorrow, is it a big job? :angst:

andy-m 23-11-2011 07:58 AM

nah. airbox & coil packs off, then its something like 6 bolts to get the cover off, swap gaskets and then refit. 30 minuites work max. Gasket for me was £10 off ebay.

i feel so stupid now! in all fairness it was dark when i looked lol, found out the problem!!!!!!!
the radiator hose was leaking slightly, it was the anti freeze that i could smell dripping down the engine, just changed the hose clip, all seems to be good now with no leaks
sorry for this pointless thread :closed:
