Dipstick reading!?

Hi folks, recently picked up my new impreza, have driven it 4 times since i've had it, haven't given her any beans yet as still getting used to driving the car!

I've just checked the oil 30 mins after driving it and the dipstick isn't even registering any oil!!? i've got no warning lights coming up, oil temp gauge normally sits between 70-80 and there's no smoke of any sort coming from the exhaust apart from an occasional dark grey/black puff when changing gear at about 5-5500 rpm...

any ideas or is it possible the car is actually out of oil!? never owned an impreza before so don't know how much or how regularly the oil needs to be topped up

Any advice would be great or i'll just take it to a garage for a once over!

Cheers

Hi.
A tuned impreza will use a little oil, and needs keeping an eye on.
Top the oil up to the correct level then keep an eye on it.

Tomma 02-05-2011 02:45 PM

all recieved, cheers!

Crowman 02-05-2011 02:51 PM

One thing to think about is what oil it's running, as it's likely to be fully synthetic, it's not good to mix oil types. If in doubt, I would do an oil change :-)

Tomma 02-05-2011 03:21 PM

i got given a couple of litres of millers 10w60 so i'm guessing it's going to be that, i'll contact the previous owner and if need be get an oil change! thanks for your help:-D

Steve_PPP 02-05-2011 03:26 PM

Has it got an oil cooler fitted? If so that could be playing with the reading on the dipstick. But agree with Crowman, a set of eyes over it and a fresh oil change certainly can't hurt! :)

Tomma 02-05-2011 04:09 PM

yes i've been told its got a mocal 25 row oil cooler......... could this be why the dipstick is showing no oil on it whatsoever?

Nige 02-05-2011 05:57 PM

It needs to be between the two dot's. :drive:

check when totally cold as oil will be fully drained into sump and give correct reading

thought i'd leave the car over night and check the oil again from cold, still couldn't make out whether there was no oil or not as it either left a smear up the dipstick or wouldn't read anything..... was off today so went up to SlowBoy racing at brands on the off chance they'd have some oil or could give me some advice...... Wow i was impressed! the guy there stopped what he was doing and came and had a look at the car and a chat, he ended up putting 2 litres of oil in the car for me and said they'd be happy to service the car for me and give it the once over for any other concerns i might have..... going to book it in over the next week or so! Very friendly and professional!

Happy days!:-D

I know, i'm glad i've only driven the car a couple of times and not put it through its paces yet... i checked under the oil cap when i first saw the car before i bought it but don't remember checking the oil level so an error on my part.....

If the check engine light didnt flash, then it atleast didnt knock, JGM normally sets the knock quite low

Tomma 03-05-2011 06:20 PM

ahh the check engine light did start flashing at 5k revs, i spoke to the guy at Slowboy about that, the mapping is going to be looked at as i don't know if its had any mapping since the decats were put in.... i'm still going through the history folder to try and work out when and whats been done to it!

Tomma 03-05-2011 06:24 PM

he said it could be det, i've only put shell V power in since i've had it but don't know what the last owner put in as it had 3/4 of a tank when i picked it up

Tomma 03-05-2011 06:30 PM

sorry i should of said the time the engine light came on i was going up bluebell hill so may have been due to load on the engine?

Some quick history

I bougt the car as a TSL Sti 333. Its similar to the Prodrive pack for the Sti but a bit more power & Tourque 333bhp & 333ftlb.
I then had it de catted 3ins down pipe Harvy Smith up pipe & front mount ic + a new Turbo from Scooby clinic. The car has always been maped by Scott on here. I then bought another Sti that had just been fitted with a new 2.5 lump. So engine's were swapt & more maping done. The car when i had it wanted for nothing. Alway's top brand oil's & Filters. Ott i know but oil was changed every 500 miles. A good car & i still miss it. :-)

I did like it. It made the same sort of noises as Angers you know all that whosh bang pssssssst wolf whistle stuff. By far it's best trick was to launch flames & on over run would try & light up the boot
Good car sold it to my daughter.:drive:

Tomma 04-05-2011 05:32 PM

Thanks for the pictures and the info Nige, much appreciated! :) yep there's a receipt for the engine and another from JGM for the simtek ecu so will contact him to have a look at the mapping about the same time i get it serviced

the bike is very cool too, looks a bit like my mates gixxer a few seconds before he high sided on druids a few months back..... at slow speed AND on pretty much his second to last lap!
