JDM HID Replacement - Blob

Was looking for a set of JDM HIDs - what are the rules with changing these with regards to MOT?

https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?m...2F114028476755

Then I came across these - which seem like maybe a better option as they are direct replacement. Just detangoed and smoked look from factory?

And there is also this set which I keep seeing pop up:

Obviously not a Subaru item but look smart, anyone have a set of these and can comment on the quality?

I had a set fitted to mine on import but generally they don’t have a beam pattern so won’t pass the mot
Took mine out

The smoked set will be spec c lights. They did the same with the bugeyes

JDM cars have them factory fitted and hence pass MOT, etc. with no issue..........

technically UK / EU cars must have headlight levelling and washers combined with HID to pass

Thanks all - that clears it up.

I think I would prefer the spec c lights then

i thought that uk wrx blob models could be ordered with hid headlights as a uk option in the day?-been looking myself ---everything on ebay now is £4-500 mark now - much brighter than standard gash headlights even with uprated bulbs though

I looked further into this and what @asperformance (sorry don’t know your name)

If it was optional then maybe you would be alright.

Think I will look for a set of spec c ones to save the hassle but still get the more aggressive looks.

Check breakers for HIDs

On my 2002 WRX I had aftermarket HIDs, but no washers or self leveling. Car was French registered, but never had any problem with the French equivalent of MOT and think standards are pretty much universal.

MOT rules have changed massively in the last 18years (and particularly in the last 2yrs or so) and various things that were over-looked are now a fail..........

recently had a 65 plate vehicle tested and it required a live OBD read out for the test duration!!

Having the same issue of fogging on n/s headlight on my car. So my question is what is the best aftermarket replacement/upgrade to hid/led spec at a reasonable price for the pair.

asperformance 27-07-2020 08:15 AM

we have been supplying and using the new generation PIAA LED upgrade bulb kits of late
very impressive to the point of having spent our own money on installing them in 2x family vehicles
because they are a still bulb they still have a traditional "beam pattern" but the throw and visibility is far superior and outperforms any aftermarket HID style set-up

I think after I looked for a while it was either fork out quite a lot for a clean set which could be:

standard UK set with tango inserts
modified UK set that have been detangoed
standard UK spec C set that come detangoed from factory
JDM HID set but would need to add on washers etc.

Or refurbish your original set either yourself or send off/take to garage that offer this and replace the bulbs with LEDs

I am sure @asperformance will see you right, that is where I will be headed once my bulbs go pop :)

@beaster is a good example of how well a refurb can work - they look smashing!

Not sure jdm hid lights require headlamp washers as i think they use 25w instead of 35w bulbs.

This is what i read somewhere and had bugeye jdm hid on my old wagon. No issues at all.

I need to replace my blob headlights now and am wondering what to do.
