Gearbox replacement :(

Right earlier today my Scooby decided it didn't like the gearbox anymore and while on boost in 3rd gear it popped out and now sounds like its full of nuts and bolts, Car still drives fine in all gears apart from 3rd which has no drive, gearbox is very noisy throughout all gears though. Now am I better off getting my gearbox rebuilt or is it easier for me to source a replacement box and do it myself on the driveway?
Roughly how much am I looking at for a decent recon or low mileage box, my car is a 2.0 turbo facelift classic, the engine is uprated producing 352bhp but was still on the original turbo2000 gearbox that has now had enough. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated. Leon

east Kent subaru spares supply n fit gearboxes from £300 call 07881205325

riiidaa 16-02-2014 06:00 PM

Where in Kent are you? Near Brands at all?

Domo2106 16-02-2014 06:01 PM

Good time to do a 6 speed conversion :grin:I had one done on my old v2 ra was well worth the ££

LeonTurbo 16-02-2014 06:04 PM

Im about 20 mins from brands hatch, if its easier I will get a box supplied and fitted but if its going to cost too much I will get a new box and fit it myself. Just wondering if I should upgrade my gearbox or replace with the same that's fitted, I just know the box that's just gone bang has had a hard life and covered nearly 130k so its done well really, the new engine is still going strong though and is near on 50k

C. J. 16-02-2014 06:23 PM

How much you able to spend ?

C. J. 16-02-2014 06:25 PM

As a few options depending on how deep your pokets are :)

andy-m 16-02-2014 06:26 PM

you can get second hand off ebay for £100 - 150. I would suggest you get a TY754.

I can recommend Jaffa on here for fitting as he has fitted mine twice (2 different cars). he's not expensive and knows what he is doing

wrx-grez 16-02-2014 06:31 PM

ty754 wouldn't you need to change rear diffs aswell

Domo2106 16-02-2014 06:33 PM

There's someone breaking a v4 sti in littlehampton I can ask about the box if your intersted ?

not necessarily. I went from a 754 to a 752 on my last box change. although Jaffa did change the diff for me, it was the same ratio as the one I had in it.

LeonTurbo 16-02-2014 07:00 PM

cost just depends on what im getting for the money. Do i need to get the numbers off the box before i get another? It would be a lot easier for someone to either help me change it or do it for me as i think it will be hard work at home on the driveway. I just want to get the right decent box for the car that will last long for the right price.

C. J. 16-02-2014 07:14 PM

If you don't want to get an old high mileage box or a 6 speed which are the two price extremes . Get a hawk Wrx 5 speed with low mileage along with its rear diff :)

andy-m 16-02-2014 07:19 PM

yes, get the box code. At least you can get one with the same ratio for the rear diff so you don't need to change that as well. Its an **** to do on a driveway, but possible.

LeonTurbo 16-02-2014 07:20 PM

ideally i only want to replace the parts that are broken, what will be a straight swap that will last long?

LeonTurbo 16-02-2014 07:22 PM

or if someone can supply and fit one at a decent price i will be happy, car is driveable but makes a racket in all gears with no 3rd gear obviously

C. J. 16-02-2014 07:22 PM

Rear diff will be hr at tops to change and will give you a better option than buying another tired box that would more than likely break

LeonTurbo 16-02-2014 07:26 PM

its an idea, its running wrx diffs at the moment, im willing to tackle it myself but think it might be hard on my own and on the driveway

Take the engine out if doing it on the drive , it's so much easier

LeonTurbo 16-02-2014 07:35 PM

if i take the engine out it will be a full refurb, i don't plan on doing that just yet, just want to replace the gearbox with one that will last ideally.
So who is close enough to me that might be able to help me out?

C. J. 16-02-2014 07:43 PM

Thought you were going to do it yourself ?
It sounds like more work but not really as you don't have to f about on your back getting the box in . Been there done that just trying to help

LeonTurbo 16-02-2014 07:57 PM

ok well i appreciate everyone advice, ive just not done an impreza gearbox before, maybe if someone in the know would help me through it id take the engine out and change the box. just sounds worse of a job then it is i guess.
what sort of price am i looking at supplied and fitted?

andy-m 16-02-2014 09:32 PM

I've done a box before on the side of the road. first time, t took me 3 weekends. 2nd time, it was 1 weekend, but I had a helper and an inspection pit. After that, I paid someone to do it for me. you need steroids or something IMO cuz it's f'in heavy!
if you can get an engine crane and take the engine out like CJ said, then I would do that. it may sound like more work but at least you wont give yourself ars3 grapes with all the straining laying on your back trying to get the box back in.

LeonTurbo 16-02-2014 09:35 PM

So you reckon getting someone to do its best bet?

andy-m 16-02-2014 09:51 PM

yes/ it's so much easier in a garage with a vehicle lift

LeonTurbo 16-02-2014 09:58 PM

ok well im now in search of a gearbox to fit my classic,
Whats the best 5 speed that I can buy that will bolt straight on and be able to cope with 350bhp for many more miles?

Willowsdad 16-02-2014 10:46 PM

Oh dear. Is it wrong to tell you your brother laughed? Take the opportunity to leave it off the road for a couple of months while the weathers crap, save some pennies then send it up to slowboy for a 6 speed conversion. You know it's your baby, and no expense should be spared.

Lol he only laughs now because its not working atm. Wait until its fixed different story then. Now if I can't get the same gearbox im going to try an sti one with rear diff and shafts if possable.

LeonTurbo 17-02-2014 02:07 PM

Slowboys told me they dont do gearboxes.

they may not rebuild them, but are you sure they won't remove and fit another?

LeonTurbo 17-02-2014 02:21 PM

No they can possibly fit a supplied gearbox. Its finding one that seems to be the hard bit at the moment. A decent 2000 5 speed will do. But if someone's got an sti box and diff ill take it if it will fit my car

LeonTurbo 18-02-2014 01:53 PM

Looks like im getting a v3sti box and diff will my shafts fit?

Late spec 5 speed I had in the rb was great with new clutch sorted !

LeonTurbo 20-02-2014 09:13 AM

ive managed to get a version 3 sti box with apparent matching 4.444 rear diff and shafts. hoping this will all be able to fit in a day. Whats the best gear oil I can use to prolong the life of my new box? Id also like to reassure ive got the right diff for the gearbox how do I tell this by counting the teeth?

Willowsdad 20-02-2014 12:00 PM

What's the model numbers on your old and new box Burt? Isn't the v3 sti box short ratio? You'll be doing 4k revs at 70, and you'll get arm ache from keep changing gears!

LeonTurbo 20-02-2014 05:11 PM

Yeah Im happy with that though mate, plus believe it or not the nur spec isn't as loud the higher the revs on the motorway. its a bit droney at 3000rpm but over that it has a much nicer tone. Im not into flat out speed anyways its getting there that counts. going to be fitting a new exedy pink box racing clutch at the same time. Hopefully it all goes together well.

C. J. 20-02-2014 05:56 PM

I'll give you 6 months and your change it ;)

LeonTurbo 22-02-2014 09:46 AM

another thing, the gearbox that's broke in my car at the moment is from a 93 impreza wrx, which is apparently one of the weakest made. I just want my car back, hopefuly doing it next sunday parts permitting just waiting for clutch

LeonTurbo 22-02-2014 09:27 PM

1 Attachment(s)
Gearbox diff and shafts all cleaned up ready. Now just to order clutch. Also wheres best to get gearbox oil from

Willowsdad 22-02-2014 10:16 PM

Looking good Burt. Opie have always got deals on.

C. J. 23-02-2014 08:29 AM

AS Performance

LeonTurbo 23-02-2014 03:27 PM

Exedy pink box racing clutch ordered, there all the same fitment upto 2005 is that right? Should be 230mm one I guess. Just gearbox oil to get and however much the diff needs.

asperformance 23-02-2014 04:16 PM

we would have deals on both clutch kits and oils........8-)

LeonTurbo 23-02-2014 06:51 PM

Still in need of sufficient gearbox oil :)

SpecB 23-02-2014 07:44 PM

First and usually last stop is always Alyn @ AS performance.
