aftermarket ecu options

i'm looking at getting an aftermarket ecu for my bug, i'm using a v8 ej207 and currently not cos my avcs wired/mapped in and my torque peeks really high, i'm wanting to get the avcs working and bring the torque down the rev range, i know i could get an sti ecu and have that mapped but considering future proofing it at the same time.

i was offered an alcatek but it's map is locked to andrew carr who is too far away to make it an option to get it mapped by him. spoke to duncan who said he wouldnt be able to do anything with it, so what options are there that would do what i want? or does anybody on here have an aftermarket ecu that duncan can map

Rdlangy1 10-09-2018 02:45 PM

Few choices out there, you could go Alcatek, Syvecs, ECUtek, Link, or Simtek just as a few suggestions...

I will have a Bug STi ECU + uprated MAP Sensor up for sale on the 20th October as I am fitting a Simtek Pro ECU & Perrin 4-Bar :ok:

My ECU was previously mapped by Duncan, then Richard @ FB Tuning, and lastly by Martyn Jeffery @ EngineTuner.

Duncan was saying that the alcatek i was offered will be locked to the mapper that did it already, and you cant get them new anymore?

I've been offered an sti ecu for 80 but wasnt sure wether to get that and go cheap or do it properly and get a aftermarket and future proof it.

Not sure on availability of Alcatek ECU - Duncan would know best, but New Simtek Pro is £695 (or not pro for less than £600), Syvecs is highly rated, but looking at £****...

Link ECU's are around the £700-£1000 mark from what I found...

T1NY. 10-09-2018 02:57 PM

Only link i found was almost 1400 lol, maybe i understood the models wrong

Guessing simtek is ok with avcs then as ur adding it to ur sti. Will have a look into that simtek pro then, still open to other ideas as dont get paid till end of month sp cant get it till then anyway lol

Simtek Pro has anti-lag and launch control

T1NY. 10-09-2018 03:49 PM

Can’t comment on his opinion really...

Rdlangy1 10-09-2018 03:53 PM

If you want the best - go Syvecs :ok:

T1NY. 10-09-2018 03:54 PM

Fair enough, tbh i dont know anywhere else in the south to get it mapped, any suggestions? its annoying trying to sort out a ecu that aint gonna break the bank and 1 that he will map.

Speak with Rich @ FB Tuning, good guy and good mapper :ok:

My Simtek is being mapped by Thwaites Developments Racing - but it is a 4hr drive from Kent...

Mind you - engine tuner is in Plymouth! Ha ha

Speak to slow boy racing , I've spoke to him only on the phone and he sounds a really nice guy. Only at brands so quick run up the a21.

Martyn mapped my car also he knows his craft very well,im afraid if you are looking for the best mappers in the UK it will have to be well outside the M25 Lol,buying a upgraded ecu is the easy part getting someone to map it properly without your car detonating and going bang is the tricky bit.SJ.

T1NY. 10-09-2018 07:41 PM

Well i have messaged both fb tuning and slow boy, would rather stick with 1 mapper but not sure duncan will be able to fit my price range on this 1, think im gonna end up just getting a sti ecu and getting the avcs wiring sorted for it. Fb tuning said he can do it and gave me a list of parts he would need. He also said he could put launch controll amd anti lag on the sti ecu? Didnt realise that was possible, thought u needed aftermarket ecu for that.

Can be done :ok:

stonejedi 10-09-2018 07:48 PM

Antilag can be done....Well kind of on the standard ecu with certain mapping software.SJ.

SpecB 11-09-2018 05:27 AM

Quite common to do a tumbler delete and then use the tumbler wiring to add AVCS with an STI ECU - bit of re-pinning needed though!

Syvecs is the daddy though if you’re serious and will protect your engine better than any other ECU for the price point.

so far i think im just gonna go with the sti ecu with a JT Innovations loom and probably go with fb tuning as he seems to offer a decent service, also been informed by others that he's pretty good at it.

also my tgv is already deleted :P

T1NY. 11-09-2018 11:57 AM

Cool , so what was needed parts wise to make it all fit? Still using 5speed ?
I was tempting to use sti short block with my heads if it came to it .

scooberblue 11-09-2018 01:28 PM

All ej blocks use the same bell house an head bolt locations.
An ej207 sti block is a direct fit in a 93 Classic. The only thing to be aware of is if fitting one in a pre 98. Lasso. Or older then you would need to use your heads as the inlet ports are in a slightly different location so your manifold won’t line up. Anything from 99 onwards an the ports are fine an you can use the whole long engine.
Even the ej25 blocks are a direct fit in classics 😀

T1NY. 11-09-2018 03:24 PM

What he said lol. All fitted straight in. But your best off doing a tgv delete while your at it though

Rich is a good mapper, he mapped and built the engine in my Spec C

just to clarify the approx pre-98 blocks whilst basically interchangeable use totally different internals and piston heights, etc. - lots of very specific differences

they also only have 4 bell housing locations as opposed to the later 8bolt approx 98> cars.......

Where is the master of Knowledge on ecu's ,Scott. when you need him.
