100w headlight bulbs on a classic good/bad idea?

As above really.

Is it a good or bad idea to fit 100w headlight bulbs in my classic Type RA?

SEXPANTHER 15-01-2013 04:56 PM

Bad idea, fitted some to my type r and it melted the connectors to the headlights!! lol

I had some fitted, it failed the MOT on the 'pattern' test or whatever it's called.

What about some good legal hids? i had a set fitted on the bmw and were very good just as long there leveled up! Makes a massive difference well worth the £50+!!!

HID are not legal for MOT either UNLESS they have washers fitted and generally the beam pattern is miles out..........

have used a lot of 100w, even 130w bulbs over the years with no issue in a variety of rally cars, etc. - only issue you may have is if the wit=ring isn't up to the job and then you simply need to switch them thro a relay to sort.......

I have xenon lights as standard with out washers, are they hid's?

Frenchie 16-01-2013 06:54 PM

I've had aftermarket HID's without washers for 7yrs on my WRX and never had any trouble with MOT's.

Scott.T 16-01-2013 07:41 PM

I always find aftermarket HIDS just like aftermarket DLR (Day Light Runners), look exactly that....aftermrket.

You can tell if there retro-fitted HID's coming towards or in you mirrors.

His tester is probably French which IIRC is a 2 year MOT

I've had no problems with my aftermarket HIDs and MOTs either - but then like Frenchie, mine are in Morettes which have the projector style lens so they seem to work well.

HIDs in reflector based headlamps doesn't look right imho.

majorscooby 17-01-2013 07:05 AM

I had aftermarket HID's in my standard reflector style len's on my classic and the beam pattern and light scatter was awful. I was never happy with them and the fact that every driver in front of me was tilting there rear view mirrors just wasn't right, not to mention I was lighting up everything for miles around including the moon, i decided to just get some decent bulbs in the end as I was destined for a tug off the rozzers!!

bonner 17-01-2013 08:43 AM

Suppose it goes on which ones you buy? my hids were spot on just needed leveling to pass the mot which they kindly done! the visability was exellent compared to what i have now wish i kept on to them, most evenings i drive with the front fogs as the main headlamps arnt enough sometimes,
