Modding an sti

Well been looking for ages now for another scooby was really either gonna get another p1 or a wr1/ blob sti not been able to find anything i really fancy, yes i am a fussy sod.

But looking at the prices that the 03/04 sti are going for got me thinking maybe one of those and modding it,yes i know could buy one already modded but car would be a bit of a project for my son and me as doesnt need to be my daily driver.

Looking at around the 380 bhp mark nothing too extreme

Engine wise what else am i looking at needing

thinking

scoobyclinic sc36 or sc38 or similiar

front mount (yes i know some people will say not needed as top mount will cope ok but something like to do as well)

will std injectors on sti be ok????

If the car already had ppp will the fuel pump be ok for this???

2.5" exhaust ok or better to change to 3" system

What others things will i need

and then obviously a jgm remap as well

Thanks for any info guys:doubleup:

Dave

Simon will be the best person to ask mate, he must of mapped dozens at this power and will know what performs the best :)

For p1/wr1 prices theres a lovely jdm white blobeye spec c looks a minter on ebay! could be worth a look??

Its funny mate, there are loads advertised but when you take a closer look there isnt actually alot, OR we are just fussy sods as you said!

Standard blob sti with those mods should make late 3's I would think.

New turbo.

Front mount at that power I wouldnt think is completely necessary

Standard injectors should be fine

If it has PPP then the fuel pump will have been upgraded anyway

Again it would probably make 380 on a 2.5 inch but a 3 will flow better and give better gains.

To be honest even if a standard blob with those mods made 360 and good torque it would be a cracking car to drive and you can tweak it about to drive how you like it when its mapped.

I remeber when I went with Paul (Scoobishmuck) and he simply changed his fuel pump and got a remap. It went from the standard 265 ish to 320 and similar torque and the difference was incredible. Much more so than when I had the hawk mapped, despite it having a bit more power.

Hongkongfooi 15-01-2013 06:06 PM

I had 650 inj for that sort of power

Scott.T 15-01-2013 06:57 PM

Tim hit the 400 mark with his ARP Turbo, not sure what the injectors were though.

I know we max'd Nige's 550cc injectors on a 20G but then is was a 2.5 block.
Simon would be able to confirm the max ability of the standard pinks, with maybe an FPR added for greater flow.

I've never really pushed the standard 550's on an STi with a Turbo upgrade so can't add much. All the turbo upgrades I seem to of done were WRX's fitting STi Turbo's and STi pink injectors, so obvioulsy they worked well together.

LOL..he had 650's, just seen the above :D:D:D:D

SpecB 15-01-2013 07:37 PM

I hit 405 on pinks

Hongkongfooi 15-01-2013 07:51 PM

I originally had an aps sr40 turbo, 550 inj, milltek 3inch exhaust , 255 fuel pump and remap which got me to 360bhp

Then tubular headers front mount and 650 inj which got me to 400

Sorry I got confused on the timing of the injectors:angst:

Im running pinks with a fuel labs reg, 20g on the top mount with 3" pipework, I would guestimate the power at arround 375/380 (thats on a 2.0)..

The pinks are nearly flat out 93% duty I think.

The blobs are a bargain at the moment.

The key question is where you think you want to end up. If you're happy with the 360 mark, which is a fantastic performance, then you don't need to change a lot. The standard injectors and top mount should be fine. If you think you'll want more then you should plan ahead. I made the mistake of wanting 350, then 370, then 400, then more - you get the idea! This ended up much more expensive in the long run. If you think you may want more then plan ahead. It may cost you more to start but it will save you in the long run. But I guess you know this already!

I found around the 360 mark could be achieved without much being changed and a new turbo, but anything above will need more - 650 injectors, 3" exhaust, FMIC, tubular headers, etc to start.

As has been suggested Simon has seen loads and can recommend what's the most effective way of achieving what you want. Keep us all updated on progress!

Pah!! 93%...loads more left to go.
A 2.5 STi PPP runs that out the box (strange but true)

380-400BHP is probably the best place to be on a Newage 2.0 STi. Time has shown that they can handle it with the right mods without major engine work. It also gives you great road car performance for alot less folding stuff then 450-500BHP would require.

My Hawk was probably about 340-350BHP (conservative estimate) and I was quite happy with that, so much so that I didn't push the boost beyond the PPP targets, just tweaked things around due to the exhaust and filter mods made. The 3" exhaust and decat IMHO makes a big difference to the 2.5l.

But the Classic running the lower 335BHP feels so much quicker, even with the longer gears, and would pull away from Nige's Hawk (which was running the same spec and similar map to my old Hawk....and with Nige behind the wheel :drive:).
Power-To-Weight calculations prove that a Newage would require just over 400BHP to be equivelent, hence why I think 380-400BHP is a good Newage target

cheers for all the input guys simon emailed back and yes injectors will be fine up to 390-400 bhp but recommends a new fuel pump regardless if car comes with one already as part of ppp as will be getting old now,to sum up all the suggestions not looking for mad power anything between 360-390 bhp ish will be as far as i want to go(well i say that now lol) and would make a great everyday car.

Just need to find a bloody decent car to start with now
