Whining noise

I've noticed a whining noise coming from my car wholes driving, it sounds a bit like a gearbox whine though it continues when I take it out of gear, also it gets louder when I accelerate.
Any ideas what this could be?

I wouldn't say that was Gearbox issue, maybe a wheel bearing, my gearbox is whining and when i take it out of gear it stops..

Dont know if there is a middle bearing in the centre transferbox where prop joins gearbox...

But i would say wheel bearing, maybe jack car up and spin wheels as well as check for play...

I am no expert though...

It sounds like it's coming from the engine bay, tone noticed that the seal where the drive shaft goes into the gearbox was leaking so not sure if that's related?

I had a whining noise coming from mine when I had it, it turned out to be the wife

spongebob 15-06-2011 01:03 PM

could be front diff, or main shaft bearings

spongebob 15-06-2011 01:05 PM

thinking bout it i had it on one of many boxs ive got through, i managed to nip the bearings up a tad where the shafts go in and all was good

Does the whine go up and down when the car out of gear and you rev the engine?

gtirobbie 15-06-2011 02:15 PM

It's most noticible when I'm doing over 50mph, when I take my foot off the accelerator it's quietens down, faster I go the louder it gets

Doobs Scoob 15-06-2011 02:26 PM

When it happens next drop it into neutral and rev it. See if it still increases with the revs.

Reason I say this is a mate of mine has exactly the same problem and we are trying to figure out what it is.

gtirobbie 15-06-2011 02:51 PM

Yeah il try that later mate and post back on here what happens

Could it be alternator ??

Brad Wrx 15-06-2011 04:39 PM

could still be gearbox or rear diff poss as they still turn when the car is moving.

gtirobbie 15-06-2011 05:00 PM

It sounds like it coming from under the bonnet more though it is hard to tell, hope I don't have to do the gearbox again!

gtirobbie 15-06-2011 08:47 PM

if I'm parked up in neutral and rev it I can still hear the whine

Doobs Scoob 16-06-2011 08:08 AM

Sounds like the bearing on the alternator to me then.

agreed or maybe power steering, Do you still hsve aircon?

gtirobbie 16-06-2011 12:16 PM

Yeah I need to take the air con off, how can I cure this if it's the alternator or power steering?

Doobs Scoob 16-06-2011 12:22 PM

If its the bearings then replacing it would be the best thing to do. I don't know of anywhere that will recon them?
Think you can pick them up 2nd hand fairly cheap.

Ok cool, thanks for all the advice!
