Tempest Rally - Sat 5th November 2011

Well, its Tempest time again. Website here:
http://www.tempestrally.com/

Was fairly popular last year, especially with the Surrey guys and girls. Some details from last years thread about the event:

Quote:

-The stages are all based around the Aldershot/Fleet area, with the furthest south being in the Longmoor military land. The spectator stages are Warren, Yateley and Rushmoor Arena. Further stages are run at Longmoor and Ash, but these two are designated as non-spectator stages (and have no spectator facilities - no loos, food etc or official parking)

- Stages typically start at 9am and finish by 5:30pm. Last years final stages all ended in the dark.

- Unlike a lot of other rallies, the event is divided into two categories - Tempest4 and Tempest2 (4wd and 2wd respectively). Rather than follow each other around the stages during the day, Tempest4 starts out in one location which Tempest2 starts somewhere completely different. This means the spectators can choose to focus on watching 4wd or 2wd cars as they please, and that both categories start in the morning at the same time on unused stages. This benefits the 2wd competitors as they don't end up starting/finishing later, plus is means everyone has an equal share of driving on cut-up stages from earlier runs.

- Car sharing recommended to reduce costs for everyone and parking spaces used - especially if watching from Longmoor/Ash.

- This years stage running order/times are still to be confirmed by the organisers.
Last year I spectated from Longmoor, Warren and Ash. Might stay within the Warren/Yateley area for most of the day this year as less driving about. Who fancies it?

Not sure I can make it this year Steve for the whole day?

Maybe the morning but shooting off early mate.

I fancy giving it a go this year, not been for a few.
I presume your driving up on the day rather then staying over.
I normally stay over at the Holiday Inn Farnborough.

No problems mate, once the timetable is released (if i can get hold of a copy) i'll let you know where we'll be.

Yes Scott, will be going there and back in a day. If you're staying in Farnborough it will be easy enough to meet up somewhere in the morning. :)

Legacydan 10-10-2011 08:59 PM

Would love to do this again but it's my busiest day of the year.

chrisp 10-10-2011 09:38 PM

Really doubt it but would like to go in the Impreza, will be there this year I think though

You never know it might be done. :ninja:

Crowman 11-10-2011 07:23 AM

I fancy this, this year. Never been before

tbtstt 11-10-2011 10:09 AM

I'm going! Was just thinking of starting a thread on Surrey but guessed you'd already have one going here! :)

Will have to dig out the maps from last year and I won't be sure of my movements on the day until I see a timetable, but I'd like to try and do Ash during the day (hopefully morning) this time so I can see some cars getting some air in the light!

This is a pretty good rally to take a Scoob on as most of the parking spots are on the flat.

I have been asked to do the safety radio for this again this year, always a good rally, think I will do it again

scooby doo 18-10-2011 01:55 PM

how much is it for spectators?

I haven't seen prices for this years event yet, but last year it was £5 to get into Rushmoor Arena (thats where the paddock is and you can see some rallying, but its not a great place to view from) and it was £10 for a car pass to get into the public forest stage car parks. So if you car share then you can knock the price down a bit! :)

C. J. 18-10-2011 07:23 PM

If you can go in a 4x4 as steve ppp will confirm it's a better bet as some of the car parks are a bit in car friendly

Hi Chris, you fancy coming along for this one? The Tempest is actually pretty good for parking (unlike Sunseeker!) and the forest stage car parks are fine even for scoobs :)

As mentioned, last year it was £10 for a Forest Stage pass (per car) which allowed you in and out of Warren & Yateley stage car parks as much as you liked. Car sharing makes it cheaper obviously.

I personally wouldn't bother with Rushmoor Area, its pants

The Ash and Longmoor stages are closed to spectators (officially ;)) so you need to know what you're doing if you're going there. Parking very limited (especially Longmoor) so car sharing for these two is essential imo.

Once the stage timetable is available, i'll try and work out the best order to visit stages to see the best action :ok:

It's my sisters wedding on the 5th so don't think it would go down well

Event guide now online:

The route of Warren has changed slightly this year but no problems with that, i've also heard that Longmoor has changed but they won't publish maps of that on the website.

:rally:

time for a bump, this is next Saturday. Martyn/Scott - you still planning on coming along?

wisiu 02-11-2011 02:19 PM

Hello guys

I am planing to watch Tempest this year again and looking forward to take some good video footage. Any chance to get the timetable for Ash and Longmoor?

scooby doo 02-11-2011 03:42 PM

If you've never been, i'd recommend going to Warren or Yateley. Pay your tenner and have access to both of these stage car parks and wander around to find various good spots.

The Rushmoor Arena is pretty poo, and the other stages are a bit more hidden away (and no spectators are meant to go to them).

Take a look on the Tempest Rally website for Warren/Yateley maps. There's a few of us going from SES/Surrey but we're not sure of our schedule yet.

x2. Tempted to go but not really sure where the car parks are, used to just putting in postcodes but think they are too remote for that

If you're planning on going to Warren & Yateley (the two main spectator stages) use the postcode for Blackbushe Airport as its just down the road and you'll easily pick up the local rally signs by then.

There is a nice spot on Warren Stage, a few years ago I was very busy pulling out the cars from a mud. Let me know if you need any details.

Agreed! It started to drizzle for a bit about 4pm but other than that, a dry and stupidly warm day - considering its November!!

Cracking day of rallying, good weather (no rain, hurrah!) and a chance to see an Impreza S9 WRC in action!

Steve_PPP 06-11-2011 09:32 PM

Was especially impressed with the Warren stage, took a long wander in the afternoon away from the normal speccy points and found 3 or 4 good sections i would have been happy to spend the day at! Definately one to do next year

Did you go back to Warren after Yately? We were driving for a couple of minutes when it started to rain, so I wasn't sure if you'd go for it!

Have to say I think I enjoyed the Tempest this year more than I have any year previously. There was a particularly good mix of cars out and managed to get the timing between stages right as well.

With the changes coming to the British Rally Championship next year I wonder if we'll see more the modern 4wd stuff appearing at the more "local" rallies like the Tempest.

Yeah, the drizzle only lasted about 10 mins so i went and camped out on a fast uphill left-hander on Warren, was about a 30 min wait between 4wd and last 2wd run but nice to watch a stage in total darkness :)

Nice one! Will definately go back to Yately next year (if its running), there were a couple of really good spots there. Might just alternate between Warrena and Yately as they are next to each other and right beside Blackbushe, so thats lunch sorted as well! :)
