Buying a 3" system?

I am looking to go with a full 3" decat system at some point and am starting to look around at what systems are available.

Anyone with any advice on what to get and where to get it would be good. I know revolution do a system, and then at the other end of the scale, Roger Clark. I know Miltek are good but will be too quiet I think. Any idea's?

You seem to of covered most :

MillTek
Revolution
RCM
GRD
Hayward & Scott

Milltek may be too quite if you have a resonated centre or resonated downpipe. But not sure what they are like without.

Revolution is also quite quiet

GRD is what I have and fits well, supposed to be 98dB....u followed me through Lewes Tunnel, so you can decide how accurate that is !!!!!

Hayward & Scott has various tailpipe options, so you can probably 'tune' the levels to what you want. And knowing them could probably do that with them if fitted there.

All work out about £550 - £700 from turbo to tailpipe.

The downside is none will accept a standard cat pipe to be fitted for MOT.

I've been talking to LongLife Exhausts over in Ashford and they reckon you would need to weld in 2 cats in parrallel in a 3" bore system to be sure a 350-400BHP car would get through an MOT and not have performance stangled by a cat.

If i decide to break my ra you can have my revolution for £200

Ok, the MOT is something I hadn't considered with a 3", so not sure what one does at that point with a 3"??,whereas I guess with a 2.5" you can simply change the pipe over come MOT time. So 2.5 full decat may be worth looking into to, but I remember you saying there is quite a flow difference. I guess what I want is to 'free up' the engine so it spools quicker and generally doesn't feel as strangled.

I think the Miltek is generally a bit quieter, but it will be interesting to see the difference deres'd tim.

Rob's quite happy with his 2.5" decat (3" Downpipe narrowing to the stock 2.5" where it joins the system) and the spool comparison between his and mine that I have logged and plotted is nigh identicle. The 3" comes more into it's own at higher rpm and power. This will allow the OE centre cat to be re-fitted.

Mines the 3' Milltek with the resonated DownPipe and a Sports Cat in the centre section for comparison with Tim's Still pretty much the same noise but mine does pass a non-friendly MOT!

Anger 21-10-2011 07:22 AM

Ive had 3inch decat systems for 8 years... What is this MOT nonsense ;)

Why thank you :five:

Kakimoto 3" throughout. I think James had one of these too and liked it.

In Fairness Steve, that's probably the only kind of thing they could fit in

If you like the sound of that I can ask the question for you?

Scooby_Greg 22-10-2011 07:46 AM

I agree with Anger's comments. I've heard the GRD on a couple of cars and for some reason sounds absolutely fantastic on Scott's. Maybe its a hawk thing. I'd recommend listening to it.

I think they never look very finished and normally don't sound very nice , not heard it on Scott's so can't comment.
Happy with the revolution but not to every ones taste as it sounds raspy .

I can't complain about the finish.
I've had many different bits of exhaust over the years.....Prodrive (manufactured by Scorpion), Magnex, ScoobySport (H&S), Afterburner (manufactured by H&S), TSL grp 'N' (manufactured by Scorpion) and MillTek.

I've not seen a Revolution, so can't comment on finish.

The welds on the GRD are up there with the Prodrive & MillTek system and certainly better then a Magnex. The tailbox and pipe is not as 'Bling' as the TSL Grp'N' but this has always been a very well finished/polished box.

Rob came round last week, with what turned out to be a MillTek classic centre, and TBH it wasn't all that.....but it was quite old so maybe they have improved.

I did give the GRD a good going over with the polishing wheel and Stainless Polishing compound/bar, as it was 3rd hand, so not sure what the shine/finish is like from new. As mentioned above though, the welds all look tip-top.

Not sure what a full RCM would work out. The GRD is £750, which is quite pricey for a relatively unknown system.
If the RCM is close to that, then TBH if I had the choice and the money the RCM would win.

I'm very very pleased with the GRD. The fit was perfect (I thought the fact that it was a slip joint would be a problem, but it couldn't of been easier, DP and system lined up perfect and slip joint did just that....slipped on, job done, even for 1 man job laying underneath).

Oh! and the price I got it for helped ;)... cheers Greg

Well worth asking the question on price etc I guess matey. Its looking from this thread like its between RCM and GRD for me.

Crowman 22-10-2011 10:11 AM

RCM for me, saving pennies for back box now , then remap , then Germany :-)

You'll be going front mount next.

Nige 22-10-2011 12:46 PM

I followed Hongkong through that tunnel he was flaming & banging away. Mine again sounded like an asthmatic cat! :drive:

Anger 22-10-2011 01:10 PM

Ive got a Rcm decat 3inch middle section here if anyone is after one

Justin 22-10-2011 01:45 PM

Depends what you're after, I've got a revolution one because it was the cheapest, quietest and flows more than enough HP than I'll need.

I don't care what it looks like or sounds like, as long as I don't get black flagged on track and it breathes well :)

And the revolution doesn't look and sound as good as others, thats for sure.
