i thought i would take my black mk3 xr3i for a run on sunday as it has just sat in my garage for nearly 3 weeks.i new it wasnt healthy as rings were going. (have been for a while) anyways just as i was comeing up to esso on the pevensey road i herd a loud crunch followed by majour loss in power an smoke bellowing out the exhaust and instant loud knocking an an oil pressure light that stayed on upto 1.5thou revs.
anyway needless to say it died an my freind had to recover it back on his truck.
im going to take the head of tommorow but have a feeling its eaton a ring.

still cant complain considering it would of had a hard life when it was new an has covered 142000 an 26yr old

Proberly the easiest engine to work on in the world (clarkson) 4 hours it took me on a 3i out & in. I'm slow so that shows you if there's no other probs it's not a hard job. I love the old cvh engines. :rally:

nah, my old Mk4 spitfire was the easiest. front wheels were even positioned perfectly for any mechanic to sit on while working on the engine.
nice big lip on the front of the bulkhead to put your mug of tea and bacon sarnie on too!

Used to love playing with the cvh. Had an X reg XR3 which was 2.5 yrs old , black with silver stripes . Thought it was so quick :-)
What was it, 105 Bhp I think.
Changed the cam and carb, which took all of about 3 hours :-)

Then changed it for lancia delta HF Turbo, Wow I was up to 140 Bhp now :-)

After a year ish I chopped it in for a silver XR3i which had twin square headlamps, and a body kit, and to think I thought it looked great, got to dig a pic out, to give you guys a laugh

God not many of them around now if they are they all tucked away in a garage

yeah the cvh is a doddle to work on an have done many engine changes but the problem is sourcing a good mfi job. plenty of laiter efi ones about.


proving hard but think i have found one.

most are tucked in garages now but mine comes (did) out at weekends an added bonus
it has only 4 previous keepers! not bad for a 1985 C plate!

even has cloverleaf alloys still! mmmm nice NOT!

X plate XR3 was that a 4 speed or were you lucky enough to have that extra gear

Sorry to hear it went bang mate, but on the upside you know its crying out for an RS lump lol i do like the older fords theve got alot of character unlike the new ones where they all look the same :-(

LOL, I had a succession of Orion 1.6i Ghias which had the same engine as the XR3i and like you thought they were quick. Then, about 6 months ago, I actually got to drive one again around the block. No power steering, crap brakes and didnt seem anywhere near as quick as I remembered. The exhaust still made a great 'farting' noise though!, maybe thats why you felt at home mate :lol::lol:

i cant see many focus,s being around when there 26yr old!

well started to strip down today an all 4 cylinders were like an oil swimming pool
an when i touched cylinder no1 it dropped down about 4mm so was ready to let go!

an Lucky yeah i have had several ghia i onions too!

an thay can reach a wopping 125mph!

Wasnt smoking when I saw you at lotbridge drove roundabout by tesco,gave me a smile,havent seen one of those since about 97 when I had a W reg 4 speed xr3 in sunburst red (orange :)
Great fun car not sure it would feel so great after being spoilt with todays cars,but fun never the less :)

yeah that was me. (you should of herd it) i was limping it to rye street keppin revs as low as can but without it stalling.

God that type of car brings back memory's liked that car too one old car I hated what my dad had was Talbot Alpine it's like having very loud sewing machine with 4 Wheels and seats

I had it 5 years. Sold it to Nige in about 1995, who then sold it to someone in Brighton who then sold it to RobEvo5, who then sold it back to Nige (I think).

i prefer them to the series 1 as there alot rarer but also worth more than a series 1!

I would of been at Ford fair in :
1989/90 with my fiesta supersport, in the concourse in 90.
1991-95 with the RS1600i
1997-99 with the series 1

When I started going in 89 it was held at Stanford hall in lutterworth, and then grew over the years to use silverstone.
Also went to many rsoc events at boreham, leicester, uxbridge, castle coombe, donnington and silverstone. Happy days.

I have a vid somewhere i should get onto YouTube.

I enjoyed camping on the field drinking having a BBQ while people mucking about with driving there cars on field before the car show which was next day it would be nice to do it again

WOW!! Still got the twin coils on it!!

Yeh it was still running the coils and the very dodgey/heath robinson (Ford OE fit) flywheel sensor/triggered ignition system.

I even had the chip out of the ECU and tried to decode and remap it back in 1993 ;);)

it will be back on the road soon.
its currently sat in the garage with no engine in it!
(replacement lump was deliverd an will go in soon.

my mate has a mk4 escort van 3i powered wich he has been doing up for 2yr an has been thinking of doin a zetec conversion so i managed to convince him to pull the lump out an sell it to me lol
