Looking for more power

Hi guys,

I'm looking to get some more power out of my car but I know absoutely nothing about modifications or anything under the bonnet.

I rarely ever have free time as I work nearly every day so as much as I'd love to get messy and do some modifications myself I just wouldn't know where to start and have no time in the forseeable future where I'll be able to. Because of this anything I get done I'll get done at a garage.

Because I know next to nothing about modifications though, where shall I start? I know of things like injectors and remapping but are these things good to start off with or what could you recommend? Also what sort of price do these things cost?

Thanks for any help,

Paul

First thing is to decide what you want from the car & then a list / advise can be given :)

SpecB 29-01-2012 12:51 PM

As above - what are you looking for, how much do you intend to spend, what base car is it?

Key thing is to think about the route to take and do this is sensible stages otherwise you can end up wasting money as you've gone the wrong way to start with.

Williams 29-01-2012 01:03 PM

It's a 2006 impreza hawkeye prodrive 270.

I'm looking to get it up to around 400bhp. Price isn't too much of an issue as I want good stuff, not cheap things.

I'm also looking to get some interior decor as well but struggling to find what I want. I'm looking for some leather sports seat covers (preferably in white). Also some sort of blue LED lights but all the ones I see are powered by the cigarette lighter which I don't want as it'll look a bit tacky. I'm also looking for some blue dashboard lights but I can't find ones for an 06 hawkeye anywhere.

Sorry if I'm not much help, but I really don't have a clue about any modification stuff, that's why I'm happy to let a professional work on it instead of myself. I just don't know what sort of things I should be looking at.

Nige 29-01-2012 01:04 PM

Hawks respond well just from a map. :EVO:

Nige 29-01-2012 01:22 PM

Scrub that about just a map. As you can see by he time of post I was writing. Ok 400 bhp forge it for safety, turbo + mapping. Price will vary on what parts you get & quality + were you get it built. Don't forget exhaust, brakes, suspention, tyres & at 21 your insurance company. Blue LED's priceless! I think silver surfer might help you there as he has just changed a few bulbs. :EVO:

Williams 29-01-2012 01:30 PM

The tyres on it are pretty decent from what I've been told by a tyre garage. I remember he said they'd cost £145 each to buy new.

With regards to turbos, what are the best to go for? I've seen a lot bad opinions on the TD range. What else is good to go for?

Also just for my own benefit, I know re-mapping gets you more power, but what does it actually mean? What changes?

Steve_PPP 29-01-2012 01:31 PM

If you've got a GB270, then its wrx based so will cost a fair bit more to get to 400 than an STI would unfortunately.

It has the PPP on it, so still has the big cat in the downpipe. Decat exhaust & remap would be a good starting point and then decide where to go from there. All depends on what you want to use the car for - whether you go chasing bhp or focus on handling/brakes.

The 5 spd gearbox won't last long at 400bhp either if you drive it hard, and the 4pot brakes aren't up to much if pushed.

Plenty of things you can do if you want to get your wallet out!

edit/ Nige has a very good point about insurance, at 21 thats going to be a fortune!!

All sorts of options but bolting a big turbo onto it isn't going to work on its own, at the end of the day theres only so much the internals of a wrx engine will take before shatting itself.

If you really want 400, then speak to an engine builder imo about getting a build done with supporting mods - then you'll know what it'll hopefully cost from the outset.

Williams 29-01-2012 01:35 PM

My insurance isn't as bad as people think. It's kept in a locked garage in a safe area and also my job and job location are one of the lowest groups as well. So I don't mind putting that bit more into my insurance for my dream car.

Just for a rough guide, the Decat exhaust and remap you mentioned, what sort of price would I be looking at for that?

Cheers,
Paul

Yeah I know turbo's need all the support with them, was more so a general question on what's a good make of turbo haha.

bigemp 29-01-2012 03:34 PM

sorry to jump on your thread paul, but i was thinking along same lines of a 400 bhp scooby so instead of starting another thread thought post on yours if thats ok, whats gonna be best option of impreza either another blob sti uk or jdm sti(which i believe are stronger engines to start with) or a hawkeye sti, and what other parts would i need to be looking at apart from the turbo to be used mainly on the road.
cheers
Dave

That is apart from finding one already done

Williams 29-01-2012 04:17 PM

No worries buddy. It'll be good input for myself as well so I can see if it's easier starting with another model or this one

C. J. 29-01-2012 04:28 PM

Scooby clinic sc420 turbo , decatt , rcm air filter & trumpet ,drop in pistons using oe rings plus a re mapp , job done on power . Can work a price out if your interested

C. J. 29-01-2012 04:33 PM

As for the brakes , high quality discs and pads will make a big differents or buy some bembos , gear box won't like the tourque so a six speed will be needed .
Best bet sell the car you have and get a Sti . Change the bits as above and all good

SpecB 29-01-2012 04:51 PM

Reliable 400 on a WRX is big money what ever way you look at it. Forged pistons as a minimum, and may as well do rods and replace bearings while you're at it.
SC42 or MD321T (overkill) turbo then you're looking at a six speed box and uprated clutch.

Williams 29-01-2012 06:43 PM

So really, investing in an STi would be better for modifications, correct?

Yes. It would be cheaper in the long run to change to an STI now, assuming you want a reliable 400+.

Or settle for about 330bhp and stick with what you have after a few mods.

Your best bet is to forget what your thinking matey.

Look hard and you will find many Impreza's in that power range that have been built well and will cost you A LOT less than you will need to spend on yours to achieve the same end result.

It's a buyers market out there at the moment with some blinding deals. !!

SpecB 30-01-2012 06:36 AM

Blob STi will take 400 on std internals and no need to do gearbox, plus brakes just need pads/disks - that's at least £3.5k to sort on a wrx to get to a similar start point.

So starting with a blob sti what else is needed to get up to roughly 400 then
cheers

Williams 30-01-2012 11:53 AM

What about the 2.5 hawk wrx type sti compared to the blob eye? I don't know why but I'm really not the biggest fan of blob eyes lol.

Thanks for all the input everyone. Really appreciate it. Given me a much better understanding. Think I'm going to loon at some sti's towards the end of the year when my insurance is up.

Nothing wrong with a hawk Sti

Williams 30-01-2012 12:58 PM

Fantastic. Think I may treat myself in October!

Like Clive said, if you are going to the point of buying a new car, there are plenty of good ones out there at around 400bhp and it will be much cheaper than buying the base STi and building yourself.

What sort of budget are you thinking of?

Williams 30-01-2012 05:01 PM

I'll have to see how much I can get saved up by then and how much I can sell mine for.

I'd expect in the £10-£15k range roughly.

If manage to get to £15k, you will have no problem at all. :ok:
