New toy - Keeper this time. !?

Picked it up yesterday, for me it needs taming down with a kinder clutch and quieter exhaust. And most importantly try getting to get it to run right with what I hope is just an electrical fault causing a miss, and few other bits and pieces, But once all sorted should do me nicely.

Looks good Rob..

I hope it came with a full tank of petrol.

Id doubt you will fill it back up again.

chris1977 08-03-2012 10:07 PM

if you can sort the problems with it looks like you got a good fast scooby

Crowman 08-03-2012 10:16 PM

Rob What suspension is on it , is it standard uk , as it looks to sit to nicely for standard shocks and springs .
What's the figures.

still keep finding things and looking. But standard shocks on eibachs, with lots of whiteline stuff. dynoed at srr after jgm,s map at 1.5bar 440bhp 420 ftld. turbo and engine should be good for 500 eventually. bodywork is great, mechanics on paper are great. So has allot of potential. just needs a little loving and some attention and should be a cracker, and a pefect spec for what i would want from it... plenty of things to keep me interested in it, and determined to have it good for the ring:) just hope the running issue is something fairly silly.

Scott,s been a diamond geezer helping so far, and plenty of knowledge and willing help about. So should have it sorted soon hopefully.

Crowman 09-03-2012 12:58 AM

Nice 1 rob, certainly bags of potential. Just a tweak or two mate.
Shocks are a must , the spec, brakes and white line bits completely out perform the uk shocks.
Looking forward to seeing it in Germany

SpecB 09-03-2012 06:07 AM

Sounds like a belter - really must get my block pinned!

Nige 09-03-2012 06:24 AM

If chy built it Rob it must be good. Good luck with it mate. :EVO:

:agreed: Keeper, never in a million years will you have a keeper. The wagon was close though.

Looks like a cracker though fella :ok:

RobEvo5 09-03-2012 09:23 AM

Cheers all - Hopefully this car willl stay in the profile section rather than Project section or worse still parts section :(

Few things to try this afternoon which will hopefully get it running right - My money is on plugs. Then I can concentrate on more fun things and tidying up.

It it plays ball with me, I'll give it some loving and treat it well, and could well be the one.

worzel 09-03-2012 09:31 AM

Potential "Ring Candidate" for this year then?

That power to weight ratio should make for one hell of a track beast. :drive:

Hongkongfooi 09-03-2012 10:44 AM

nice one rob....surely now its time to keep a car for a while...this should dare I say 'tick all the boxes'

Skullfudge 09-03-2012 12:17 PM

Looks a nice bit of kit Rob !

Scott.T 09-03-2012 12:37 PM

Not seen this in daylight or clean yet, but it looks good just needs an STi interior to finish it off (or does anyone know of a P1 interior going cheap !!!!).
Rob is gradually raiding my part's bin of classic electrics (although he has quite a stash himself).

hopefully this will be running sweet soon, as stinks of fuel at the moment.

What is has done is make me think if the Hawk STi is reallly me !!!!!!!

Scooby_Greg 09-03-2012 12:51 PM

Very nice Rob. A keeper for sure.......

Cheers Apart from comfort - It does tick every box going, but have learnt you can't have both unless you have a MUCH larger budget. But I've got the family motor for main use so this really is just a toy and doens't need to be anything other than a play thing.

I think its something you have been struggling with for a while If I'm honest. But I'm not sure if its you jsut miss you old classic and not neccisarily because you miss a classic. But as we discussed a nice classic is now becoming a classic.

The JRM meet was an eye opener. No offence to some of the classic's that might have been there, but out of what must have been 50 scoobs, there wern't many very nice what I would called loved Classics there. (Apart from that dodgy blue p1 thingy that is ;) Majority were all newages.

Looks good rob,did see that on ebay a couple of weeks ago,bet its mental quick....hopefully you can enjoy this one and keep it for a good while.

Yep been watching it for a while, and done a deal with the fella on my classic wagon. When its not missfiring/running super rich - yes mental quick, all 4 wheels only just about putting the power down in 2nd gear in the dry with good quality tyres....., with 3rd gear not far behind. :D Proper grin motor.

I'm Not convinced with the PPG though, love the ratio's but dont think I like the noise. So may end up swapping it out for a 6 speed, and see if anyone wants to do a deal.

Scott.T 09-03-2012 08:00 PM

YES its quick, when it's running right as went out with Rob today.
We are closing in on the running issue.........

sweet it does sound like a beast,i take it the ppg is pretty loud/whinny then and more for use on track???, im sure someone will do a deal for a 6 speed box though if you decide to swap.

blueygod 09-03-2012 08:15 PM

well like that mate, very nice

Sometimes the whine is addictive and makes you chuckle and feel like your in a rally car and sometimes it's annoying. Problem is I'm trying to tame the beast, and trying to make what is basically a track - 1/4 mile car into a road going car with mild manors.

All part of the fun / plan which keeps me interested - So all good.

I can see this one being a bit of a project/play thing, and could really do with a cheap economical daily hack whilst I play with this as it might end up spending time off the road whilst I sort things.

RobEvo5 11-03-2012 05:30 PM

Been fiddling on and off all weekend, and big thanks to scott for checking a few things with us and being at the end of a phone as a techincal helpline... But think we now have the warm running sorted, having gone for a very long and enjoyable drive this afternoon.

Tried just about every sensor going, with last being the MAP sensor which markedly helped. But the biggest contributer was the inlest manifold had one pipe that was just capped off with a bit of insulation tape that had oppened up therefore sucking in air, and another nipple at the back of the inlet that wasn't even capped off at all, Again sucking in air. Shocking attention to detail TBH, and still need allot of tidying up under there but good enough for now.

So car was basically sucking in a allot of air on cranking causing it to run super rich, then on idle when warm it was sucking in air causing AFR to run rich at idle, and also between a dodgy map on overrun and running rich on cruise was causing the plugs to fowl up, which then took a fair while if at all to clear.....

Can't believe i didn't check the basics first, but heyho. Will see how cold start goes, but hopefully it will atleast be better, but not expecting super things from the GEMS. And Scott has kindly offered to check AFR on idle and across the range again now things seem to be more in order.

PPG growing on me now as well. Love the ratio's and think a 6 speed would be really hard work at this power level. So need to think carefully, if the PPG stays the clutch has got to go.

Crowman 11-03-2012 05:34 PM

Happy days mate, looking forward to seeing it in the flesh :-)

AndyWRX 11-03-2012 06:01 PM

Glad your getting it sorted mate :-)

Scott.T 11-03-2012 08:05 PM

Yep, certainly been a bit of a brain f...k and head scratcher over this weekend, and alot of diagnosies via txt & email.

Very strange that it was just fowling No.1 and we were almost at a point of swapping No.1 & No.3 injector to see if the fault followed.

Popped in on the way back Saturday and whipping the GEMS out and fitting the Apexi was a good test.
Although it didn't fix it, it confirmed something wasn't right as it struggled to even start on the Apexi.

Managed to get it running on the Apexi but had to throw loads of fuel in to get it to even start, then had to pull loads of fuel back out to get it to idle without holding the revs on the throttle.
Once it was idling sweet, turned off then tried to start and there was no f'ing way it was going to start again unless the fuelling was changed again.

This confirmed there must of been some kind of fuel/air issue, which sounds like Rob has found today.

Fingers crossed it's now heading in the right direction.

RobEvo5 03-04-2012 04:20 PM

Well have had it a few weeks and I still have it :), although it's fast becoming a money pit and time eater like every other scoob I have had. But its slowly being transformed.

Biggest transformation has been to take out the 3 puk clutch and replace with a new scoobyclinic uprated orgnaic clutch which has OEM feel but holds the power.

Next up was to dampen down the exhaust and replaced with a full 3" Miltek with centre CAT. Nice level of sound now, although I may replace centre pipe with Decat yet, and keep centre CAT pipe for MOT time.

Next up was to cap off a couple of intakes on the inlet manifold which was sucking in air exagerating the cruise and idle enrichment, along with a fettle to the TPS which had been sticking.

Next was to replace the disgustingly dirty induction kit with a new one which has helped again with idle and cruise leaning out. And has made a big differece to the power and bum dyno reckons another 40 horses from this.

New PFFR7's plugs fitted, ISCV cleaned, and now pulling cleanly and like a train through all the gears.

Couldn't resist a pair of MINT STI V5 seats that came along, and got a knocklink to fit in the dash suround. De striped the car so more stealthy now.

Recent smell of fuel transpired to be a leaking Fuel filter so replaced that which was a job worth doing anyway.

Knocklink in dash surround ready to be fitted soon.

KYB shock and Eibachs fitted weekend gone and very pleased with the end result and really compliments the Whiteline Antilift, rollbar, strut brace, and polybushes now.

Treating it to some nice Millers CFS 10w50 and filter very shortly.

Stereo fitted :D, but need to work out whats going on with speaker wiring at the front. But was nice to see it has some nice 6x9's at the rear and component set up in the front. So may need to think about a 4 channel amp to get the best of the system.

Apart from cold start for about 1 min in the mornings, car is now running nice and is very, very quick pulling in all the grears quickly. A 6 speed although nice for less noise would be crazy. It's previously dynoed at 440bhp at a tad over 1.5bar, the car is pulling a steady 1.7bar to the redline and feels like its pushing anything between 440 and 500 now.

In the persuit to make a daily driver, I don't like the cold start so next project is to replace the MAF with a sykline maf which is very strong, plumb back in the maf and narrow band lambda, hook up the Apexi in favour of the GEMS and see what it can do. Main aim is to make it a better daily driver with good cold start, and more torque. But might just push the boundaries of boost levels as well. :D

Once sorted I'll then tidy a couple of cosmetic issues that bother me, but plenty of things still to do and still loving it - Pointless amount of power but priceless grin factor :D

Crowman 03-04-2012 05:51 PM

Top job mate, it's a new record for you , the sweep has begun as to whether you will have it by same time next week .:-)

RobEvo5 16-05-2012 02:53 PM

If my car survives the ring trip - I'm now giving serious contemplation to selling up.

Car is as above but now with a far more friendly new scooby clinic clutch and a quieter Miltek Exhaust, and has been de stickered.

It's currently running approx 450bhp so goes well :D

For car as it is, I'd be looking for around £6,995 which is allot of car and I know would be worth considerably more in bits. And might take a fairly good offer on this subject to timing, and what else I might have my eye on at the time.

I also will also under seperate sale have a 6 speed gearbox coversion and a V5 Simtek ECU with AL and LC enabled.

Hongkongfooi 16-05-2012 04:01 PM

Well it lasted two months....a record:wink:
