Tyre advice

i need new tryres and they are all currently 205 55 r16

what are the best tyres and sizes to get i dont mind the price

thanks for any advice

Scooby_Greg 09-09-2013 11:05 AM

Now you've started a debate! There's lots of differing opinions. Evo have done a tyre test in the latest issue and the Goodyear Eagle Assymetric 2 came out the top. I've got them on my hatch and they suit it perfectly for an all round tyre. Other tyres suit different cars and everyone has their favourite

HYDROSCOBY 09-09-2013 11:23 AM

ok thanks, should you run different sizes from front to back?

Red Baron 09-09-2013 11:43 AM

The Goodyear Eagle Assymetric 2 isn't available in 16", think it starts at 225 in a 17" rim. A lot of people are using Federal and Hankooks at the moment, think it all depends on how deep your pockets are. I use 205/55/R16 on my VW, I'd avoid Pirelli P6000s as they seem to have really weak sidewalls, I had 3 bulge on me, currently running Dunlos as they are supposed to have good wet braking performance which I need on my commute. Always worth a look at what Tescos have on offer, they currently have quadruple club card points on some goodyears and others and you can choose your nearest fitter.

thaks red baron and you are right about the starting size of the goodyears, pireli`s dont sound fun thanks for the heads up on that. have found out that on awd you cant run diffrent sizes either have to be the same allround. i also wont good wet tyres how are the dunlops lasting?

Red Baron 09-09-2013 12:10 PM

Yep, need the same size all round or you'll end up destroying diffs.

Dunlops seem ok but I'm running them on a heavy old Passat Diesel, I've put about 10K on them so far with no problems at all.

I meant Falkens not Fedrals by the way.

HYDROSCOBY 09-09-2013 12:27 PM

yeap and that would be costly lol

ok well i will look around

thanks for the advice

drakesnow 09-09-2013 04:40 PM

I would second either Hankook or Falken. I would say either Hankook V12 Evo or the Falken 452 or 453. I run the V12 on my newage and they are a good balance between price, performance, decent wear, and also good wet performance as well I have found. I run Toyo T1R on my classic and those are good too but definitely wear a big quicker as are softer compound. That's fine by me as she is more of a weekend/track car ....dedicated hooner! ;).

HYDROSCOBY 09-09-2013 04:53 PM

i use her daily so dont wont high wear really but still wont a good grip and good in the wet as i use country roads

thanks for the info

Ginola 09-09-2013 05:18 PM

I run the same as Greg, Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymetric 2's but as pointed out above there not avaialble in your size,..

If you use it for lots of weekend work or have a spare set of rims, you can get Toyo 888's in that size 8-)

I have Hankook V12's on the impreza and am really impressed so far (only really done ring and back) but stiffer sidewalls than the Toyo T1r's I had before. I've got P-Zero Neros on the Leggy and honestly I think they are amazing and may well try them on the impreza next but I have no back to back comparison for the, as I've not driven the legacy on any other rubber (plus they are f'ing expensive).

Do not touch Kumho Ecasta's mine were only on the impreza for 6 months before the lack of grip and shocking road noise forced me back to the Toyo T1r's (well it was a good excuse for a set of PFF7s!).

Hongkongfooi 09-09-2013 08:18 PM

Don't think toyo t1r are made any more as I would have them again. Lucky they are still on the wagons wheels.
Looking at hankook v12's for the p1

Red Baron 09-09-2013 08:31 PM

Tescos (Black Circles) still list the T1R in 205/55/16 but not sure the speed rating is correct.

I'm really impressed with the V12's coming from the T1r's as the stiffer side walls give a much better bite at initial turn in and less squirming at the back.

Try tyreshopper.co.uk or camskill

I use yoko ad08 on the scoob and they are epic, but it is my weekend toy/track day car.

On our everyday cars I run falken 452 and 453's at the moment also used toyo but not t1's think Px or cx or something. Quite grippy but last ok.

jonnyricer5 09-09-2013 10:38 PM

I love my linglong ditchfinders!!he he

drakesnow 10-09-2013 12:04 AM

LOL Jonny.....

Good stuff here guys, I agree on the hankook sidewall comment too...as long as you pump em up a bit more. I'm pretty happy with those and the toyos but I would like to try some Falkens out sometime. And someone buy me some 888's for Christmas please.

For an average tyre on the jag x type (running 18's 453) and the passat (running 19's 452) they seem good, wear on the jag has been about 10k to 15k miles on front, but then it is a 2.2tdi with fwd and Jo and I have heavy right foots. To be honest I've only just put the. On the passat and it's not exactly a fast driven motor.

Marongoni used to be good, few mates have used them on Integrales. Also a mate with a Clio v6 uses the falken and he hasn't ditched the twitchy beast yet, so that must be ok.

ok great info :10:

thanks alot:more:

HYDROSCOBY 10-09-2013 08:52 AM

the hankook v12 are apparently summer tyres when you read info on them it says

" However like all summer tires, the Ventus V12 Evo is not intended to be driven in near-freezing temperatures, through snow or on ice"

as i will be :drive: hehe not the best option for me i think but can always get another set of rims for the futrure

thanks alot

Most tyres are summer though, I've managed ok in the snow with Falken FK452s and Vredestein Sessantas on the scoob :)

All season or winter tyres will be pretty terrible on quick car in the summer when you want to push on, as the tread blocks are too soft.

HYDROSCOBY 10-09-2013 09:48 AM

ok i will give them ago then

im sure they wil be fine or more fun

scotty 10-09-2013 01:59 PM

I've got contisport contact 3 by continental on my scoobie , its a shame they don't do them in 16in because they are good tyres .

my old m&s tyres worked pretty good at the very wet Goodwood track day we had at begining of year. i didnt realise they were winter tyres, i just chucked them on lol.
