New Classic MY99 Owner in Goudhurst, Kent
 

Hi all

Just picked up my first ever Impreza and popped in to say hi. It's a UK Turbo 2000 that's standard except for a prodrive back box.

First week of ownership has not been smooth. First good run saw the aftermarket alloy rad spring a leak. Bottom silicone hose also leaking. So changing all that this weekend for standard type rad and proper Subaru hoses, with decent clamps.

Also developed hesitation on partial throttle (worse when cold but still does it when warm). Research has revealed that the answer could be MAF, Lambda sensor, Coolant temp sensor, plugs, coils, fuel pump or... they just do that becasue of the closed loop fuelling. I'll look into this once I get the coolant to stay in the car. Starting with checking for any fault codes.

Hi and welcome.
Hestiance on part throttle when cold could be a poor lambda.
Discconnect the lambda and try if it improves.

When the car/lambda is cold the feedback from the lambda to the ECU is poor and therefore the mixture is a bit hit/miss. Once up to temp it should improve, although even OE lambda's on the MY99/00 ECU give a little hesitation on light throttle.

As Scott said, my MY99 UK classic hesitates when cold and that has a brand new genuine MAF and Lambda fitted (I questioned it when he was in the car with me the other day), is fine when warm though so you have a small problem lurking somewhere. As for coils, you only have the single coil pack which I believe are pretty reliable unlike the old individual ones on top of the spark plugs so you can probably discount that.

Unplugged the lambda tonight and car so much better. Don't really want to leave it Unplugged as that surely will effect fuel economy (and doubt it'll pass the next mot?) is it possibly to have it remapped to delete the lambda so it still passes mot emissions? (sure I read that somewhere but can't find it now).

Lambda is only used at idle and cruise.
Running without it won't make alot of difference on a standard car to the fuel economy. Although maybe not quite under the fine control the lambda would provide.

When Lambda start to fail they read lean so the car runs rich.

You could try a new one but I would suggest you run without and maybe bung a new one in at mot time.
