Crystal Palace Motor Racing 1950's - 1970's
It would be so nice to go back in time to witness Motor Racing at this iconic circuit, where so many of our hero's raced (Hunt, Lauda, Chapman, Hill)
But alas we will just have to make do with reading about them and shake our angry fists at the local councils that decide to close down these fantastic venues. Much like the closure of Brooklands, I am sure the revenue they would make from the History, the events, track days and track experiences in such central locations would make them huge tourist attractions. You only have to look at The NurburgRing built in the 1920's to show the world the strength of the Germany Motor Industry. But alas us English like to close, bulldoze and build Tesco's on our history. You say that, but how many businesses have struggled to turn a profit from the Nurburgring?
I agree that it is really disappointing to see Brooklands and Crystal Palace go the way they have. I suppose it is indicative of the Germans saving their heritage, but I wonder if they have comparable sites that weren't preserved? Excellent links by the way. Very interesting. |
Crystal palace still host sprints on 2 days of the last may bank holiday using part of the old circuit. Well worth a visit a lot of the classics still sprint. One of the old boys of my club used to race against moss back in the day.
Currently I hold the class 6 course record :) |
