monthly pay too

555_Si 05-12-2013 10:39 AM

I rather not pay monthly as I pay it and forget, I hate paying car tax, I wouldn't mind if every penny went on road maintenance.

"The new option of paying by monthly direct debit is also expected to cost 5% more than paying for a full year in one go."

What a surprise another way of taxing us more!!!

not really as if you buy 6 months tax, it's 5% more than buying a years tax now anyway.

The monthly thing is a bit of a risk IMO as if you lose your job and cant afford this months tax, you get fined and could lose the car, all at a time when you are short of cash anyway.
I will still be putting 6 or 12 months tax on at a time.

also, what if you buy a car that is taxed monthly, and then can't put tax on it cuz the log book and insurance papers haven't all come through yet?

What am I going to do with the SES tax disc holder?

That's my thoughts too! ;)

I buy 6 months for the pug and 12 for the scoob, as I'm not sure when the pug will break so I try to minimize the amount the government would need to refund me :D

Claire_PPP 05-12-2013 03:19 PM

Bet the police will love that! If people already pull the stunt of cancelling their pay-monthly insurance and driving without cover, you can just imagine the excuses that'll crop up with the tax... "well officer, I set up the direct debit, it's not my fault if the government haven't been taking the payments" when actually they cancelled the direct debit months ago.

As for the SES tax disc holders... perhaps they'd make a good mobile phone cradle for in the car or somewhere to store petrol receipts or something? :-D

Somewhere to store breakdown card/paperwork?

I quite like the idea of the 'set-up & forget' approach of direct debit, and splitting the cost over every month (both my scoob and mondeo need tax in the same month!) but not if its going to cost me more overall!

+1!! Money for old rope! they should scrap car tax alltogther we pay far to much tax as it is!!:vom:

Banstead Stig 05-12-2013 04:33 PM

If they scrapped VED althogether, it would just hit somewhere else.

I thought the monthly idea was going to be a good 'un, but having to pay more does seem a bit of a joke.

I haven't read the detail, but I can see the idea of monthly VED being quite handy as it takes away the nonsense of trading in and getting a refund or people haggling over a few hundred quid when you sell your car because they'll have to pay in a month or so. It doesn't necessarily sound like that's going to happen though.

Personally, I'm a bit nostalgic about the discs, so think it is a bit sad to see them go. I think I probably still have all my old discs somewhere from all the cars I've had. :(

I can only think that this is going to cost more in the long run, another hair brained government idea. Now they will start putting up anpr everywhere and say it is to monitor for tax evasion, in other words big brother will know more info about you than they already do.

When people said that they wish car tax to be scrapped they meant just that, not just the disc! The idea of having to sorn your car when insurance ran out was a pain in the **** for people that don't use cars all year round, you then had to get a refund on your tax and not just keep it running, as quite often I'd get 12 months tax, but when car is in my garage unused over winter sometimes wouldn't renew insurance straight away.

ScoobyStu 05-12-2013 06:23 PM

In fairness, if you pay monthly rather than one go on most things you generally pay a slight premium. Could be a handy option to some who can't afford it in one lump. Good to have the choice I think.
