Re thermostat sticking ??

Hi all after 2 months without a Scooby I miss mine too much and have decided to get another I've found a very clean 80,000 v5 sti import which has full history and seems to have been very well looked after but the owner says it has a sticky thermostat and every now and again the temp creeps up to 3/4 but then drops to normal does anyone know if a sticky thermostat would cause this just don't wanna get it and end up having it cook itself ??

I'd be looking at it from this angle...... surely if it was something simple, the seller would have it fixed so he can sell at a higher price? Too many people try to sell a car saying it has a minor issue to get shot of it when they know of a more serious problem these days :(

That's exactly what I was thinking but he's willing to drive it down to me from Birmingham 160 miles as I'm possibly going to take it in PX against a Zafira GSI I have apparently it's not actually over heating the fan cuts in and out as it should ect ?

:agreed: Get him to fix it!

Happened to me (not a scoob) but was told a simple fix, £££`s later it still wasn`t right, long gone now but will be wiser the next time. It looks nice in the photo`s but plenty of nice looking scooby`s out there :ok:

thermostat is below the water pump, doesn't require cam belt removal so is a relatively easy job...

agree with the others get him to have it changed

I have had 3 sticky scoob thermostats in my time. they all made the engine take longer to heat up rather than get to hot, i.e. stick open rather than closed. Dunno if that's the norm though

Think I'm gonna take a risk on it and see what happens I've allowed him £2000 in PX for my car so worst way in the world I will get my £££ back if I break it for parts I'm going to change the coolant temp sensor , thermostat , and then flush and refill the coolant ,and then go from there I'm having trouble locating a coolant temp sensor does anyone know if they are a main dealer only part ?? there's plenty on eBay but really want a oem quality one

I have a three pin one in the garage and I'd just try cutting the centre out the stat and see if that stops the over heating

I was thinking of trying that do I just cut the centre out of the thermostat and put it back in the housing ? And what would u want for the temp sensor mate ?

I'm pretty sure it's that at fault as he's been driving it since febuary and it hasn't overheated once he's driving down to me from redditch tomorrow ,

The gauge gives really erratic readings sometimes when u start it from cold after 10 seconds it shoots round to the red stays there for. 30 seconds then drops straight back down to cold he also said the fan cuts in and out as it should and isn't staying on like u would expect it to if it was that hot, I'm going to check it with a sniff test and use a lazier thermometer to see how hot it actually is when he gets here do u know what temp they are supposed to run at ?

could it be the excess weight of those 7 dab aerials on the roof causing problems ? ;-)
