Newage wheel advice needed

Hi guys,

I have an 05 Blobeye WRX with standard 17" wheels.

I'm still undecided on refurbishing these in black, or buying a new set.

I've never actually bought wheels for a car that weren't already off of the same car, so I've never had to worry about correct fitment or anything.

So a couple of questions...
  • PCD is 5x100?
  • If I got 18", what would be the correct tyre size?
  • How much would the ride be affected going from 17" to 18"?
  • What offset would be OK?
  • What is the correct bore size?
  • Any "what not to do" tips?
Sorry for the nooby questions.

Thanks!
Foz

pcd is 5x100. this is the hole marks for the bolts/nuts

going to 18 wont affect ride

go for no more that 8x18 imho. 225/40 18

if in any doubt buy from people like revolution http://www.revolution247.com/Search.aspx or ruislip tyres on scoobynet as they have dealt with many scoobs like yours

05 WRX is PCD 5x100.

18" tyre size would depend on the width of the wheel purchased, but most common 7.5 or 8" wide wheels (usually labelled as 7.5J or 8J on the wheel) will take 225/40/18 tyres.

Ride wise... on a newage I don't think there's a massive difference really. Looks way better on 18s though :)

Offset.... Subaru is ET51 or 53, can't remember, but I've run ET42 with no problems on a fairly standard bugeye.

Bore size? Assume you mean for the nuts? They're 12x1.25mm with a 60 degree taper i think.

"What not to do" tips..... don't buy chavvy wheels ;) and bear in mind clearance for brake calipers - you should be fine with WRX 4 pots but if you upgrade to Brembos some wheel designs will foul the caliper.

Bah, Tim beat me to it whilst I was typing

Thanks for the quick response guys - both very helpful :)

Regarding the bore size, I meant the cutout in the back of the alloy to fit over a the hub (if that makes sense) - or is this only a thing on OEM wheels?

Haha! No chavvy wheels for me, I'll seek approval first ;)

Thanks again :)

As the others have said, 100pcd, 8j 225/40/18 ET48 is spot on. Offset will vary from wheel to wheel, the standard wheels are 53 I think?

You can fit 8.5j ET55 under there ;) but that's not 100% the correct offset I believe,

The centre should be 56.1mm, though check this to be 100% you can fit hub centric spacers to some wheels but they are not ideal really, better to get ones the correct size to start with.
Also different alloys need different wheel nuts! worth noting, Speedlines for example are totally different to standard!.. don't buy "light weight" wheel nuts.. unless they are titanium! ;)

7.5 is a little narrow.. you should be looking at 8's really

It's also worth making sure what you go for has clearance for Brembo or AP calipers to safe guard yourself for future potential upgrades.

I would urge caution with refurbishing standard WRX alloys.

There have been many instance of powder coating weakening them and some eye watering results... I'm sure RIIIDAA will be along with some links at some point.

Painting should be fine though.

Thanks for the additional information Ginola :)

Also thanks for the warning, assuming this is the kind of thing you were referring too - http://bbs.scoobynet.com/showpost.ph...2&postcount=24

Maybe I'll buy new wheels, that looks terrifying!
