Detailed teh blob anit!

So I took it upon myself to machine polish the Scoob, after first practising last weekend on the daily hack - Which is now very shiny too!

I was very kindly lent a machine polisher and paint thickness gauge along with some machine polishing chemicals! (thank you!), after taking measurements last week, and being wowed by the time it took in comparison to doing this sort of job by hand I thought it was a no brainer to give the Scoob the once over as well.

Process was as follows:-

1. Snow Foam! Hurray!
2. Clean wheels, no acid just a nice gentle ph neutral shampoo (they are pretty clean anyway)
3. Rinse the car half way through doing the above!
4. Clean car:- 2 bucket method (lamb skin mit etc) Rinse.
5. Tardis each panel one at a time, rinse and wash again.
6. Clay Mitt the car - to be honest it was pretty dam clean after the Tardis but this should be done anyway
7. prepare car for machine polish - stick tape everywhere!
8. Cut car with cutting compound :polish:- buff off
9. Polish car with less abrasive stuff :polish:... ooo shinney - buff off
10. Glaze with poorboys black hole.:polish: - buff off
11. remove all the tape everywhere! - Put the machine away!
12. Wax with Dodo Juice Blue velvet pro applied with an applicator by hand as this is a hard wax - buff off

Job done.. 9 till 5.30 (no stopping!) this used to take me 2 days! :)

Pics... Please excuse the iphone snaps, and they don't pop all that much due to the crappy grey weather today!

This is post Tardis/clay etc:-

Prep!

and several hours later!!

Im very happy with the results there is not a single swirl in the paint anywhere *just lots of stone chips! argggH!*.. I don't think I can return to "doing it by hand" again!

Ha ha ha, thumbs up for sure Dave! Looking lovely, always wanted to have a go with a machine polisher! I presume you had to tactically avoid any of the stickers.

Scooby_Greg 02-05-2015 08:34 PM

Looks fantastic Dave - very nice job. Glad it went well :ok:

This is my kind of thread. :D

Excellent work mate.

What tape do you use? I get a bit nervous, but then always regret it as the polish etc. gets in the nooks and crannies and on the trim.

Bought my 'blue tape' from Polished Bliss

Scooby_Greg 02-05-2015 10:13 PM

I'm.sure Dave will post but it's 3M blue masking tape - it's low tack so doesn't leave and residue. Most car cleaning sites will stock it.

Ginola 02-05-2015 10:41 PM

Cheers for all the comments guys

No just don't go mad on them with compound, you can still polish the light suffice scratches out of the door stickers for example.

A few hours ? is that all LOL....

How many passes with the DA polisher did you do and what grade Mezerna ?
I need to restock my 500 and 2500 grades.

Doing in by hand to keep on top of things is fine once the paint is smooth. I only DA'd my black SEAT once in twice in 2 years as it didn't start to show significant swirls until after about 2 years.

2500 and then 4000 with the Mezerna, 1 pass over the hole car with each *quarter panel at a time*, mine had 1 or 2 swirls it wasn't too bad, bearing in mind I had done the lot by hand twice since I've owned her, and she gets a clay and polish/wax every 6 months or so. I doubt I will need to do it again for quite a while, although the subaru paint is pretty soft!

:) you should only need to wipe off some polish residue from the edges of the tape after you remove it.
