The Bug...

Well, now I have finally got all of the parts on the car, I figured it was about time to start sharing some pics e.t.c.

So this was my 2002 STi Type UK Prodrive Edition Bug the day I bought it...

http://www.southeastscoobies.co.uk/v...psoutus2ps.jpg

The previous owner had done 9k in 4 years, but didn't really wash or clean it.

First job was to give it a good scrub!

http://www.southeastscoobies.co.uk/v...psgbdhhbwi.jpg

Now I am slightly OCD when it comes to maintaining my cars, so it got booked in for Cam / Timing Belt change, with tensioners, new water pump and all the necessaries e.t.c.

At this point I would like to say all bar one part for the car has been bought from Alyn @ AS Performance - huge help, always great prices, and very very friendly.

Heres all the old parts:
http://www.southeastscoobies.co.uk/v...psneyxfheg.jpg

Next as it was mechanically sound, I decided it was time to get serious with the cleaning and sorting the bodywork.

There were a few scuffs on the bumpers, boot, door e.t.c and the paint was very flat...

So a trip to my local bodyshop (Thanks Drew and Aaron @ D&A Customs): and it came out looking like this:

http://www.southeastscoobies.co.uk/v...psektcpywo.jpg

http://www.southeastscoobies.co.uk/v...psfdhlhxte.jpg

http://www.southeastscoobies.co.uk/v...psdis0ax8y.jpg

http://www.southeastscoobies.co.uk/v...pswmwyct37.jpg

http://www.southeastscoobies.co.uk/v...pseeajh5xc.jpg

http://www.southeastscoobies.co.uk/v...pslh0tnbyv.jpg

Then after a few days - I decided to get the machine polisher out, and start bringing that O2C Rally Blue to life...

http://www.southeastscoobies.co.uk/v...psdmywwpl0.jpg

http://www.southeastscoobies.co.uk/v...psfsoh1e0c.jpg

http://www.southeastscoobies.co.uk/v...ps10y4frni.jpg

http://www.southeastscoobies.co.uk/v...ps1umbogng.jpg

http://www.southeastscoobies.co.uk/v...psdcerzcqd.jpg

Next on the list were front and rear strut braces:

http://www.southeastscoobies.co.uk/v...psaanzsdx6.jpg

http://www.southeastscoobies.co.uk/v...psi3vqboyw.jpg

Next came my first SES meet - the SRR Day in July 2014 - I had no expectations of what the car would produce, and although I knew there was a back box on it, wasn't aware of any other mods.

I was more than pleasantly surprised when the car kicked out the following:

http://www.southeastscoobies.co.uk/v...pscep0gdur.jpg

http://www.southeastscoobies.co.uk/v...psdoxawmtt.jpg

Then I started trying to make some sensible mods that were semi future proof for when I decided to up the power:

http://www.southeastscoobies.co.uk/v...ps4rxcnnzp.jpg

Booked back in with my mechanic friend Jules and in went the Pink Box Clutch and lighter flywheel. At the same time, I had a full service, with PFR7B plugs going in, coolant, Millers CFS Nanotech 10w50 oil and filter, and new Do-Luck air filter and fuel filter.

http://www.southeastscoobies.co.uk/v...psjfhtx74k.jpg

Inbetween - even though it was kept in the garage, I always keep it covered up to keep the dust off - yes im sad :-)

http://www.southeastscoobies.co.uk/v...psnhhtvfnj.jpg

The next area of attention was the suspension. The car was 12yrs old, and feeling quite "Loose" when driving along. A quick chat with Alyn and £££ later, and I had Eibach ARB's front and rear, Whiteline drop links, whiteline Anti lift kit, Whiteline steering rack bushes, whiteline gear mount bushes, whiteline ARB mounts, and generally every bush under the car replaced. Also at this time came the 4x new Wheel bearings, HEL brake Lines, Brake Fluid drain and replace.

http://www.southeastscoobies.co.uk/v...psjzcn3nd0.jpg

Then came XMas - and after boring my parents and GF with car parts being the only thing on my list, I was lucky enough to get Silicone hoses, 290ltr Scoobyworx Fuel pump, Brake Discs, PFC Brake Pads, Turbosmart 3 port Boost Solenoid.

http://www.southeastscoobies.co.uk/v...psmrgaha5c.jpg

http://www.southeastscoobies.co.uk/v...ps6po6nrxa.jpg

http://www.southeastscoobies.co.uk/v...psv4rzqp8y.jpg

Then in Feb I had to have more surgery - and so post operative recoup was in order - which consisted of a new Cobra 3" system with Sports CAT, HS Trick Up pipe, Ported headers - again all supplied by Alyn.

http://www.southeastscoobies.co.uk/v...ps4laokbyu.jpg

http://www.southeastscoobies.co.uk/v...pslcxcw1b2.jpg

http://www.southeastscoobies.co.uk/v...pshm4s2kkh.jpg

What followed was a new HKS SSQV - im sad, I like the noise!

http://www.southeastscoobies.co.uk/v...pswaaievyh.jpg

http://www.southeastscoobies.co.uk/v...psmakcawap.jpg

And some Morrettes, which were sprayed up by D&A Customs..

http://www.southeastscoobies.co.uk/v...psjiautupj.jpg

Then last Sat, and this Sat were spent back down with my mechanic Jules, fitting all of the parts, which had been updated to include new Phenolic gaskets, inlet gaskets, exhaust gaskets, rocker cover gasket kits, another oil and filter change, another coolant change.

http://www.southeastscoobies.co.uk/v...ps2yfgx1je.jpg

http://www.southeastscoobies.co.uk/v...psoq1yieyy.jpg

http://www.southeastscoobies.co.uk/v...psvk6ytdjq.jpg

http://www.southeastscoobies.co.uk/v...ps9unkkz5l.jpg

http://www.southeastscoobies.co.uk/v...psuhtvsdk2.jpg

http://www.southeastscoobies.co.uk/v...psufaf5z6b.jpg

http://www.southeastscoobies.co.uk/v...pspjmfkgnv.jpg

http://www.southeastscoobies.co.uk/v...psywusqjv4.jpg

http://www.southeastscoobies.co.uk/v...pspb4nkkzs.jpg

And that's pretty much where I am as of tonight...

Morrettes haven't been fitted yet, but will be in a few weeks.

The car is booked in for an opensource remap with Duncan (Racedynamix) at SRR on Fri 22nd May.

In the future - its booked in for a near on full respray (apart from boot and rear doors) on 26th oct, and I plan on having the wheels refurbed.

Cheers for looking!

Ryan :ok:

NL03Scooby 02-05-2015 08:49 PM

Cracking stuff Ryan, good to see pics and an overview of how far things have come and what the future holds, can't wait to see it soon!

Rdlangy1 02-05-2015 08:51 PM

Cheers rob :ok:
Remember - just "tinkered with!" Ha ha

Consti 02-05-2015 09:00 PM

Tidy car and well done. 👍

Hongkongfooi 02-05-2015 09:07 PM

a very clean bug that. Nice update:doubleup:

Ginola 02-05-2015 09:12 PM

That was a very nice read Ryan and some nice thoughtful and sensible mods done too (except the dv!!! ) :p ;) I'm ocd too mine is under a cover in the garage! :)

You've definitely made it your own! :polish::polish::more:

Yeah, nothing more then 'tinkered with' from what I have read... Ha ha! Love it mate.

Rdlangy1 02-05-2015 09:32 PM

Cheers guys :ok:

And yeah sorry Dave - it's the kid in me! Ha ha

Bolesroor 02-05-2015 09:58 PM

Very impressed with what you have done so far- looks great :ok:

555_Si 02-05-2015 10:41 PM

Looks good, been spending some on that. Nice.

Bytes 02-05-2015 11:50 PM

Great job Ryan

Steve_PPP 03-05-2015 12:49 AM

Nice one Ryan, car looks spot on. Top work mate :ok:

Banstead Stig 03-05-2015 06:34 AM

Definitely a car to be proud of.

Looks incredibly tidy and, as said above, some sensible "tinkering".

Rdlangy1 03-05-2015 07:50 AM

Thanks gents :ok:

I'll post some more up when the morrettes are fitted and after the remap :ok:

Rdlangy1 06-05-2015 06:46 AM

Turbo blanket is now on too :ok:

Going to do another coolant change at the weekend - putting in some Motul Inugel Expert...

Rdlangy1 28-05-2015 01:45 PM

http://www.southeastscoobies.co.uk/v...ps7oxmogwd.jpg

State of play after Duncan @ Racedynamix mapped the car...

Next mods are some coilovers - injectors sent to Lateral to come back 830cc, and an MD321T turbo... then map tweak...

Ryan :ok:

Steve_PPP 28-05-2015 01:51 PM

Nice one Ryan. 330bhp is pretty good for the vf35 so i'd be happy with that - especially with the sports cat.

Look forward to seeing it with the morettes ;)

Rdlangy1 28-05-2015 01:54 PM

Thanks Steve - they were due to be fitted this coming Saturday - but whilst I was away the weekend - "someone" (SHE shall remain nameless!) moved the mondeo and cracked the front bumper into the gate! so morrette labour funds will now go onto mondeo bumper labour funds! grrrrr - should be fitted end of June though after payday :ok:

seventune 28-05-2015 08:40 PM

Awesome looking bug chap. Nice results on the power.

Ginola 28-05-2015 09:51 PM

Cracking stuff! Coilovers/321T will transform the car again.. What brakes do you have dude? ;)

PFC Z pads and quality set of standard discs - alyn supplied both...

Thinking I'll be needing some better discs when I up the power again :ok:

Do the brakes first :oldman:!! :) either better discs or some nice AP's/Alcon's

C. J. 29-05-2015 09:49 AM

On turbo Id find a sc40 and stick that on . Best spool I've seen on a number of 2ltr scoobs I've seen . See around 410 to 430 on vpower and upto 470 on 20% meth
I'd also advise 330 ap's

Rdlangy1 29-05-2015 09:52 AM

I know I know...
Ap's ? (Bigger calipers?)

Only reason I haven't bought the bigger brakes is that the discs and pads were only bought at Xmas, and have only done 750 miles since then ! ha ha

But I understand what your saying - no point going faster if I can't stop :ok:

HI C.J - so an SC40 over an MD321T?

Who makes the SC40? (in newbie mode here!) ha ha

Ryan:fool:

Rdlangy1 29-05-2015 09:56 AM

Have found this one?

Ex Tax: £1,350.00

Ginola 29-05-2015 10:02 AM

here is the other contender.. http://lateralperformance.co.uk/prod...______________

Rdlangy1 29-05-2015 10:23 AM

HI dave,

that was the original turbo I was looking at :ok:

C. J. 29-05-2015 10:25 AM

Scooby clinic
They don't do them now , why I don't know they where awesome . I also think the sc42 from 3 to 5 years back where better than the ones available now . Find a second hand sc40 you won't be disappointed 👍

Rdlangy1 29-05-2015 10:35 AM

Hi C.J - thanks for the info...

So whats the main difference between the SC40 / 42 and the MD321T - spool up time?

ryan

C. J. 29-05-2015 10:36 AM

The sc40 & md321h are similar same as sc42 & md321t
I just think the sc40 is your best option from all the time I spent at the rollers with simon

and I have no doubt that over 7yrs you have seen what goes well e.t.c. - hence I value you input :-)

Many thanks :ok:

Lucky 29-05-2015 01:28 PM

Missed his thread somehow.

Great thread Ryan and the car is coming on treat. Some nice mods and nice to see the car looking pretty standard instead of chavved up.

I bet it felt totally different after the recent map. Nice figures

Thanks Steve,

I must admit at first I was disappointed as it felt very sluggish - and didn't seem to have the oooomph (technical term there!) is used to have..

however looking at the dyno graph, the torque curve is much smoother - and so by altering my driving style (holding out longer in 3rd and 4th) yes it feels a totally different car... :ok:

Hi Dave,

It does have a certain "rumble" to it now...Although yours is a lovely sounding motor I have to say - can always tell when your pulling up to a meet :ok:

have to say very very impressed with the cobra system as a whole - Alyn supplied at a great price, and it bolted on with no issues at all! great system...

Ryan :ok:

Rdlangy1 10-06-2015 03:41 PM

Well next stage of the project has been ordered via alyn -

Eibach pro-street S coilovers

http://www.southeastscoobies.co.uk/v...pspzanaadj.jpg

And eibach camber bolts:

http://www.southeastscoobies.co.uk/v...ps8vsdacos.jpg

And a set of Speedline Turini 18x8 2120 alloys in gold:

http://www.southeastscoobies.co.uk/v...psrn0apcat.jpg

Alyn did me an amazing deal as always on both...

Will post pics when they arrive :ok:

Ginola 10-06-2015 03:42 PM

Oh I recognise those wheels! ;)

Rdlangy1 10-06-2015 03:44 PM

Ha ha :ok:

They will be my daily wheels and the 17's will have track rubber fitted and used as track wheels (cheaper when replacing tyres!)

Ryan :ok:

Ginola 10-06-2015 04:45 PM

Very true! ;) I'm using the turini's as track wheels as they are not in as good nick as the larger 8.5" rims

Rdlangy1 10-06-2015 04:53 PM

Wow 8.5 - my wallet couldn't stretch to 8.5 18's - still in hoping the 18x8 will be a noted improvement on the stock 17's :-)

Hoping the eibach kit will make a nice difference as well - although fixed damper, and onto original top mounts - the write up and alyns advice seems sound enough for what I need :ok:

Ginola 10-06-2015 05:41 PM

Quality items those coil overs are from what I've read

Rdlangy1 10-06-2015 05:45 PM

U think so?

I am so clueless I started reading all the write ups and tbh besides the name and build quality couldn't see what I was paying £200 more for over BC's and Tein's...

Tein's have dampening adjustment and top mounts, BC's could have been the inverted type with top mounts for same money but tbh Alyn has never given me duff info and so I trust him impeccably...

Reassuring to know someone else thinks they are an ok buy so thanks Dave :ok:

Rdlangy1 23-06-2015 06:08 PM

Ok wheels have now been fitted - 225x40x18's Turini 2120 supplied by alyn @ AS Performance... Fitted with Eagle F1 2's all round...

kartingsteve 24-06-2015 12:10 AM

Looking very nice :ok:and looking forward to see it on Thursday. Plus as for coilovers I had BC's on mine but in the end I had to change them for KW's 3 as I thought the BC's were crap :shock:so I think you have made the right choice on Eibach pro-street S coilers :ok:

Though you can also buy direct from speedline still need to get another 2 (will be my 6th one bought they can go brittle and snap when removed a lot)

Red Baron 24-06-2015 07:27 PM

I've given up buying the speedline one's from Subaru for my ST2S, they kept falling apart as the tabs fell off and they fell out every time I washed the wheels.

I thought that Dave but soeedline reckon their old centre caps don't fit my wheels as they changed them??? Sounds like cods wallop to me as surely the centre hole has to be same????

But I'll see what they come up with :ok:

Ginola 24-06-2015 07:30 PM

I have those to (black backed caps)- but they too small and don't fit - the ones that fit have only 4 prongs and a metal wire to push the prongs out to clip it in - and its 3mm bigger in diameter...

scotty 24-06-2015 10:35 PM

Ryan have you measured the size of cap you require as you might be able to find some on fleabay .

Rdlangy1 26-06-2015 12:42 PM

Well i decided to step away from the performance for a bit and give the Wallet a rest.....

Front are Rockford fosgate T152 and backs are Rockford fosgate p142...

Arrival and fitting tomorrow so will post more pics then :ok:

Rdlangy1 29-06-2015 09:39 PM

Ok well pretty disastrous! After finally getting my stereo 2 days late - fitted it ton and nothing!!!! Zip!!! No power to unit at all!!

Al did was connected new wiring harness and plugged in (like I have with every other stereo I've fitted) and naff all!

To top it all - got the speaker adapters for front and none of the holes match up (but they def right part number) so that's failed too..

So I have no door cards / no stereo and a back seat full of parts...

Epic fail!

Steve_PPP 30-06-2015 08:27 AM

Its a right sod when things don't work isn't it

Assume the head unit will come with a manual that lists the pin-outs on the connector? If so, get a multimeter on the end of the harness and check you're seeing permanent 12v and switched 12v (ignition) on the correct wires.... If that's all fine then duff stereo?

"Right Sod" is probably tame compared to the words being cussed about last night pmsl !

Although I have learnt a valuable lesson..........................RYAN LEAVE THE CAR ALONE AND PAY SOMEONE ELSE TO DO IT !!!!! :ok:

Will try and sweet talk the one sparky I know tonight and see if he will take a look - me and a multimeter is like a young lad fumbling around a lady for the first time! ha ha ha ha - poke here and there and have no idea what im looking at !!!! pmsl !!!!:mrgreen::mrgreen:

Indeed shiny - perhaps I should just frame new car bits I get so that they remain shiny rather fit them! ha ha

hopefully mate they will make a big difference - gotta say just something as silly as having a decent head unit with all the features I wanted makes driving the car a much better experience... And surely gives me another 10bhp right ????? :-?:-?

555_Si 16-07-2015 08:43 AM

I never put the stereo on in the golf or the old scoob, nice soundtrack already.

555_Si 16-07-2015 08:44 AM

Just noticed your stereo surround has been cut out, might have a spare one here if you want it that hasn't been butchered. Will check it hasn't been damaged.

Rdlangy1 16-07-2015 08:48 AM

Cheers si - would appreciate that - was hacked by the previous owner :ok:

Agreed I prefer the boxer soundtrack but sometimes you can't beat a good tune either - best of both worlds :ok:

555_Si 16-07-2015 10:28 AM

Cool I'll dig it out, think I saw it in the shed, I mean Jeep, last night.

how do they sound ive been looking at ground zero range

Rdlangy1 18-07-2015 02:49 PM

Yeah impressed with the sound but Impreza doors are very thin metal and get quite bad vibration issues - so although more weight (about 4kgs) I went for full dynamat extreme sound deadening - makes big difference :ok:

Rdlangy1 14-09-2015 09:10 AM

Well I finnnnnnnaaaalllllllllly got my eibach coilovers fitted...

Car is sitting 35mm lower at back and 30mm lower at front...

Goes in tomorrow for full geometry setup with pro drive settings and then the 18's will go back on...

Also having my new neutral position switch fitted so that might bring my engine back to full performance...

Oh well they were slanty on my phone - but not on PC - so all good :ok:

Rdlangy1 14-09-2015 09:20 AM

Later in the year I will need to have the waxoil done as I have found my first 3 tiny bubbles of rust starting to come through on the offside rear arch - every other arch is fine, but that needs sorting before it gets worse.

Also planned to have turbo and injectors done - but I think I will leave them until after Xmas as monies starting to be saved for Xmas.

Ryan :ok:

Doh, you too. I noticed my first tiny bubbles of rust on one of my arches a few months back. Haven't done anything with it yet though...

Any pics of the whole car as it sits lower now?

Rdlangy1 14-09-2015 10:47 AM

no whole car pics at the moment as it was p*ssing down - but once set up and the 18's back on tomorrow - ill post up some before and after pics :ok:

Wahey...! Finally the suspension is on. Good stuff, can't wait to see the finished results, hope it feels as good as it should look.

Time to get some negative camber going and utilising all that tyre!

I was thinking of going for that look where my wheels are at 45 degrees to the car and slamming her to the floor, and then having a top speed of about 2mph? what you reckon? pmsl !
