coolant question
Classic owners the question is the overflow/expansion bottle that goes into the front passenger wing does it need to be filled with coolant just want to double check as been confirmed from a good reliable source that i trust it needs to be filled .
|
Cheers been confirmed off to get coolant tomorrow and do it when then engine is stone cold .
|
Ye of little faith!
|
In 12 years of ownership mine has only ever had a dribble in the bottom and the sides are dry and crusty.
It's for expansion so is only used or should only contain fluid if it needs to redirect fluid to it. If you fill it up where is it going to expand too......The floor..... |
It definitely shouldn't be full, but I thought there were lines which gave an indication of what was reasonable when the engine was cold and hot.
I was persuaded by the logic that if there's nothing in there, how can you monitor coolant levels? However, I'm certainly no expert! |
Coolant levels are checked by removing the presure cap off the header tank. The level should be just below the rim.

Good to learn something new. |
New age do have a max/min line on the overflow bottles the idea of having some in there is if for any reason it sucks back it doesn't get air in the system.
|
exactly, the expansion bottle ebbs and flows as dictated by the needs of the system - you ideally want some coolant in otherwise the potential for air in the main system is higher
|
Mine has a dribble in the bottom and maybe a spider.
