Classic Radiator Recomendations
After performing a service and having a rummage underneath I thought it was about time the Radiator was swapped out after 15 years.
Currently no leaks but the bottom it looking a touch rusty and I would rather perform preventative maintenance then be stuck somewhere. Standard Radiators seem to be around £60 and Ally ones around the £100 - £120. In order to make the job a little more worthwhile I wouldn't mind throwing an Ally one in there of standard size/core that can accept the OE Fan/Fan shroud fittings. If anyone has a recommendation rather then me pinning the tail on an Ebay donkey, please let me know. I may also throw a new fan/shroud on too, in order to tidy things up. Cheers |
I doubt you would go wrong with a standard width Mishimoto one, cheaper than a koyo which the Americans seem to love.
|
I've heard of a few guys having a bad experience with Mishimoto, but don't have personal experience.
|
Nothing wrong with a EBay one @ £40 but spend away

To add you asked for recommendations, people run 700bhp race cars with the standard rad / blue prints so why pay more ?
Read what you want into my initial response but only trying to save you money, why I don't know Scott . |

I had already stated I wanted something more worthwhile then an OE radiator, if I was going to put the effort into swapping. I just thought a nice Ally one would look the part. Nothing to do with power capabilities, because sometimes it's not all about the power, ask spunky ;) |
There is a mishimoto one on scoobynet car parts for sale section on the 1st page if any good

If he comes to another Goodwood I'll let him go first ,see what happens now . |

You clearly remembered it, as the 'hook' was a subtle one and the bait was well and truly taken ;) We will put it in the SES 2016 calendar. It''ll be great, we can sell tickets which should bump up the SES account nicely. |
Ive just fitted a replacement one from ebay works a treat just had to replace one oem clip for a jubilee clip as there was slight movement on a pipe .

Just to lighten the mood, one of these would match your paintwork nicely Scott ;) http://achildgrows.com/wp-content/up...1/radiator.jpg |

Can you fit one of those in front of a classic? Reminds me of the classrooms at college... |

I couldn't possibly fit that myself, as I don't have the appropriate authority to carry out such a technical task. Therefore, as this thread was initially asking for valued recommendations, can anyone recommend a good plumber ;) :tumbleweed: |

Trying to revert from how downhill this thread has gone, if I were in the position to need to replace a radiator I would be looking at the aftermarket options. Agreed, sometimes a slightly more expensive aftermarket option isn't always necessary but if it looked the part, is still easy to fit and works as well as (or probably/hopefully better and for longer) then a nice, for example Mishimoto one, would be the way to go. It's the same with silicon hoses, people know that in most cases the OE ones are fit for purpose and work perfectly in most cases, but most of us would still choose the nicely coloured aftermarket options because we like to show them off and have that 'piece of mind' |
Get a replacement standard one, more than up to the job and your existing one proves the point....... Also, with the cool panel you have you wont see much of the new rad anyway so not really much of a cosmetic change imo......
|
I'd only switch to an alloy radiator if I was going the whole custom route and it needed to be none standard for an inter cooler/oil cooler fit eg:

I'll see how much Subaru want to rape me........ |
i was under the impression that the OEM were better than Mishimoto for cooling. I was looking at Laterals combined radiator and behind front panel mounted intercooler if they still make it, not quite sure how there is enough room for it all to sit in there mind.
|
Just to throw some reasoning behind my thoughts of staying with a standard rad....
When RCM built Clive's P1, (used as example as everyone knows the car) they removed his alloy rad and replaced it with a oe Subaru part? So I'm guessing the oe rads must be well up for the job? And just because it gets my goat!! Alloy rads are so much cheaper to produce, especially when compared to the material cost difference...... So why are they so much more to purchase...? Is it really because they are shiney? |
most alloy versions offer poor(er) performance than OEM anyhows and certainly wouldn't be my choice
as with most things there is a vast difference in OEM quality and hence why w stick with a very cost effective replacement version - not as cheap as some egay variants but everything fits and works as it should |
