Took the risk and brought her home
 

So I drove the 160 miles(originally 700 miles) round trip journey to pick up my new ride. 51 plate bug eye wrx wagon. Oh my lord she is loud and fast, the quickest i have ever driven, mind you my previous car was a standard classic wagon and this is running a carberry rom just under 300bhp.

Now i dont need any more power or noise it is crazy loud with bops and bangs mapped in by pole position, which i verified the car with before i made the journey.

I just have a Couple of questions, i noticed on the journey home under braking above 30 mph the steering wheel wobbles ever so slightly left to right. The previous owner has fitted godspeed g hook discs and kevlar pads with braided brake hoses and refurbished calipers 6 months ago and only covered less then 4000 miles. It also has bc coilovers fitted could it be a tracking problem or braking any thoughts much appreciated.

Apart from that i am a very happy man and cant wait to start enjoying the shell garage forecourt LOL. Will add pics once i have given her a good clean.

As to your questions I'm only 1/2 a spanner when it comes to mechanics :-D but has the geometry been checked recently,mine is spot on after mine was done.

thats what i was thinking of doing first. can any sts tires kind of place do the geometry setup on the coilovers. cheers bolesroor. where did you get yours done

As above - although I probably only classify as a 0.00001 when it comes to mechanics.

Be worth checking discs aren't warped - shouldn't be being that new, and that everything is bolted on nice and tight - failing that geo and tracking would be my way forward, as well as checking tyre pressures and making sure you have the same tyres in pairs on the front?

The wheel shake will be unevenness on the brake discs at a guess. Chances are it's uneven pad deposit or, in the worst case scenario, warped discs (quite hard to do).

It could also be run out in the hub.

If the discs are decent and fairly new, an on-car lathe job might be the way to sort it.

Carnetix at Melton Mowbray, I highly recommend Becky, Glenn and the team but a bit far for some, I'm sure someone can suggest somewhere nearer :ok:

On car lathes skim the discs, but the lathe is attached to the hub, so it should mean it is perfectly tailored to the car. If you took the disc off and skimmed it and there was slight run out in the hub, the same problem would come back.

It's not that cheap, so if the discs aren't that new it probably isn't worth doing, rather have new discs fitted... the first should be able to make sure any run out is compensated for.

I should warn you, I'm no mechanic, so I could be barking up the wrong tree!

take callipers and discs off, hang the callipers from the springs so they don't flap about and check the mating surfaces between the discs and the hubs are completely clean and refit . that will rule out one possible problem out!

I was going to suggest this too.

If the discs are decent they shouldn't be warped but its not difficult to warp cheaper discs with a bit of heat (trackdays etc).

Chances are the disks are a bit warped. The owner probably gave them a pounding after fitting.

Chuck a cheap set of disks on to see if it cures it. It may be cheaper to do that then to get a specialist to diagnose it.

Because of the coilovers do i have to get it geometry tracked at abbey motorsport or can i take it to any sts or such. Thanks for the advice

As long as you have the coilovers set to your desired ride height the choice is yours.
You can go for a basic track using the old fashioned metal rods and dials methods which any tyre fitted can do.
There's 4 wheel laser alignment which some tyre places can do and some specialist.
Full geo is the next step. But if it's tracking right and all 4 wheels are pointing in the right direction the step up to full geo from a regular drivers perspective isn't really going to be noticeable.

Lastly there's full geo and corner weighting which IMHO is pointless for a road car. But good pub talk ;)

Price wise it goes from £35 to probably £250

Some people like to mess with their setup, some don't. My rule of thumb is if the tyre wear is acceptable it can't be far out.
I've had mine Geo'd once and tracked once in 14 years of ownership and my suspension has been on/off probably in excess of 20 times.

I bought a Scoob that was fully set up with coilovers, first roundabout it wanted to go straight on, checked the coilovers and they were all different heights, had it set up and it was like a different car
