SES Ring Trip 2020 29/5/20 to 3/6/20

Ring dates for next year have just been published,
I think the dates for the best Ring access will be from:

Friday 29/5/20 for a four night stay returning on Tuesday 2nd June

We will traveling via the Channel tunnel.

Eurotunnel fare at the moment is £138.

Departure 29/5/20 @ 07.50.
Returning 3/6/20 at 17.20

Do not forget to book when going through the vehicle details section, "to say you are carrying bikes on the roof"

We are staying here:

http://www.hohe-acht.com/your-hotel-...-nordschleife/

The hotel also has space for us to store tyres tools etc. in a secure cellar.

I have provisionally booked 11 twin rooms and 5 single rooms,

The room rates this year for a twin room are 70 euros PRPN and 47 euros PRPN for a single occupied room, prices include breakfast.

If you are wanting to join us on this trip please put your name on the list.

Hi Ian

Is this to drive the circuit? If so how much is it to track your car?

Our trip to the ring.

Is about like minded people out on a driving trip having fun in their cars.

We generally convoy down to the Nurburg area and stay in a hotel that is close to the Nurburgring.

Yes the ring is open to the public on the days that we are staying.

On the trip when the ring is open to the public it becomes a"Public Toll Road" which means your pay 30 euros go to the barrier and off you go on a site seeing trip, commonly known as a TF (touristenfahrten day)
its not a race track and should be treated as such.

Although most of the road is unrestricted as to how fast you go.

Its not all about the ring though the local area has some great scenery and some very nice driving roads.
Have a look at previous ring trip photos and vids it will give you an idea of what we get up to.

I hope this helps, if you have any questions please ask.:drive::drive::drive:

555_Si 21-01-2020 09:30 AM

This year I am probably taking my Scoob, but probably not going on the Ring, as Ian says it is also about the company and the local surroundings.

Though if you have never been on the Ring before, worth at least getting a passenger lap if nothing else.

Lucky 21-01-2020 08:55 PM

You won’t regret going. Firstly a great bunch of like minded people. It’s such a laugh. The scenery and roads around the ring are incredible. When I went I only did a couple of laps and then thoroughly enjoyed watching from various points around the ring, beer in hand :)

The drive there and back is a big part of it too. I would say to anyone thinking of going, the SES ring trip is the one to go on. It’s brilliantly organised and great fun. I will for sure be going again, but due to young family, owning and expanding business and a love for LeMans (which is only a few weeks apart), it’s not been possible for the last few years for me. I’m doing LeMans again this year but next I think I’ll be joining this trip again.

Steve.

I'd love to join you for this one day, but haven't seen anywhere that says whether kids are allowed to be passengers round the ring? I suppose if it's considered a normal road there shouldn't be a restriction, but has anyone got the definitive answer??

If children were not allowed they would tell you there are no signs saying no children.

On TF days its a public toll road open to any road going vehicle.

Children are definitely allowed

Obviously that is your choice.

But it doesn't fit with Claire coming due to childcare/getting Ellie to school on the Mon/Tues so unless I work out a last minute plan with a passenger then i'll be missing it this year again....

BIG"E" 13-02-2020 05:57 PM

Ive been looking on various car forums and it would appear several others have the same idea to go at the same time as us.

This is probably due to the amount of time the ring is open..

So I would suggest your book Eurotunnel to be assured we all get on the same train.

Do not forget to book when going through the vehicle details section, "to say you are carrying bikes on the roof"

(Before you used to have the option of booking over 1.85m)

The price has also started to creep up it is now £136

Red Baron 13-02-2020 06:27 PM

Why do you need to book the high clearance carriages? Unless you're running something stupidly low or extremely wide you'll get on the upper or lower decks of the standard carriages fine.

My WR1 used to bottom out as did other newage scoobs on coilovers (due to the overhang distance from the front splitter to the tyres) the lower deck is a lot wider too, my megane is 10" wider than the scoob and it just makes it easier.

We have always done this.

Agreed 100% 😥😥

Bolesroor 20-02-2020 12:56 PM

Agree about Granby, would have been even more special with 2 V8's at Ring.

I've just booked crossing (£142) so it's going up.
I did speak to them online as I want to stay with Mark on the single deck who will have the MGR on a trailer. They said not an issue subject to availability and to book high vehicle as Big E said " bikes on roof".

Having said that on my last trip with SES I was placed on the lower deck with no issues and my scoob is quite low on the front with a splitter aswell.

They do have spotters that check your height before directing you onto the train , incase anyone is worried and unable to get on the single deck?

BIG"E" 21-02-2020 10:20 AM

We still have some rooms available..

The Eurotunnel price is starting to increase which can mean space is limited on the train we are getting.

The trip is not all about driving the Ring,

the local roads, scenery and the atmosphere around the area is awesome.

The ring was on my bucket list Ive now ticked that box 12 times

If anyone has any questions please ask away..:ok:

Couldn't agree more.... hence I'm taking Claire & Ellie out there for a week at the end of July :-D (as can't make the SES Ring trip in May).

Doubt i'll be on circuit as will be taking the diesel beemer, but will be visiting stuff and enjoying the scenery in the Moselle/Rhine valley. Ellie likes a castle or two as well, no shortage of them... Staying 2 mins from the Ring in a chalet/lodge place (Lindner Ferienpark Nürburgring).

We were going to go to Cornwall for the week but the accomodation in Germany looked better and half the price!

What's everyone's thoughts on breakdown cover then as last years and previous ones we find out that we are not covered if you go on track.

Has anyone found one that will cover you?.

georgehawkins27 15-03-2020 12:14 PM

It wasn't the being on track, it was if you broke down on-track.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but legally I believe the issue was (in the end), down to modification of vehicles.

Which that being said, any suggestions on breakdown cover for modified vehicles? 🤔

Note for all, as they have been clamping down in UK, even a non-standard exhaust is a modification, so not advised to dance on a risk-positive strategy (unless the cover is more than doubling down on cost?!)

I think the main issues are that:
- some breakdown companies would have an exclusion zone around the Ring, based on their assumption that you've broken your car by ragging it on track...
- If if they don't have an exclusion zone around the Ring, some admit to looking at Ring photos/social media accounts if you happen to break down nearby and then won't cover as the policy doesn't cover 'competitive' or track driving.
- Some will just refuse to cover modified cars, but only at the point of claiming when you most need help. When was the last time you saw the option to even specify modifications on a breakdown quote?

It's something i've thinking about as well as we'll be staying a few miles from the Ring in July, but won't be using TF. If i need breakdown cover, I fully expect to have an argument on my hands because I just happen to be staying down the road...

Thieving gits, all of them :(

scotty 15-03-2020 07:36 PM

I used AA for European breakdown cover and I sware by them that they are bloody good they covered my old type r that was lightly modified :ninja:and will use them again for both my foz and classic .

Leight 15-03-2020 07:50 PM

Yeah I used AA last year but it came out that if you went on the ring you are not covered they look a the carmas etc for the ring and then it all kicked off from that, Sean knows more on it then me as hes been looking into it but I'm sure your not covered and was wasting money paying for it and can't use it.

Yes mate I’m in a A45 AMG. Had a RS focus last year at the Ring good car but the engines are chocolate. Then bought a Golf R that lasted 7 days couldn’t get it around a decent corner + it drove itself. I’m sure the A45 will be ok there. You still got the bug?

Ferd 17-03-2020 03:20 AM

One silver lining in all this virus stuff, fuel could be cheaper this trip if the prices remain they way they're going, 1.07/ltr for 98 over here now: https://www.rtl.lu/mobiliteit/petrolspraisser it's dropped around 30cents in over the last fortnight.

Yep, the bugs still here. 13 years i've had it now.
The A45 AMG will do fine round there, I had a good fun lap a few years ago chasing one for ages, although he just had the edge on me. A few bits of traffic let me close back up :D

HYDROSCOBY 17-03-2020 10:06 PM

I was with the aa breakdown and broke my gearbox near the ring. When it come to claiming they checked photos and noticed my car had been on the ring, change plates next time lol.

It wasnt declared as modified as it wasn't a option.

Also it said in the terms that it has to have all the service stamps done, I'm sure not many people have that because we all maintain are cars are selfs, well I do anyway.

They will always find something if they don't want to pay up.

I hope you all have a good trip

See they have closed the borders into Germany not sure how long it will be for .

Frenchie 21-03-2020 06:20 PM

I believe it's initially for 30 days, but with the possibility to extend if necessary. Lots of countries putting time lines on events/suspension of travel ,etc ,but we are all going into the unknown. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Nige 23-03-2020 09:24 PM

So my cars ready & Boris says no!

BIG"E" 27-03-2020 12:36 PM

Quite obviously our trip is not looking good !!.

Those of you that have paid deposits will get a full refund.

For those that have already booked Eurotunnel

I have copied the following email which explains your position with Eurotunnel

Standard Tickets

You can amend your booking for free up to 24 hours before your departure time, if you’re travelling in the same direction and we have space available (you will have to pay the difference if the new ticket is more expensive, but there will be no amendment fees). Most ticket types have a full year from date of original purchase to be used. You can amend your booking here: My Eurotunnel

Flexiplus Tickets

As well as being amendable our Flexiplus tickets are fully refundable too. Travel to be completed within 1 calendar year of the date of original purchase.

Our service is operating as normal and our ticket terms and conditions can be found here.

Bookings made with Tesco or other discount vouchers

If you have purchased a ticket in full or part using a Tesco or other discount voucher, please contact us by phone to amend your booking.

If it proves impossible to continue our (as looks likely) trip.

I will be looking at going later on in the year.

If all else fails we can hang onto the Eurotunnel tickes until next year and go then provided its with in a year of the previously booked trip.

So now its a case of fingers crossed and wait and see.

Best regards

Ian

Must be a massive disappointment for everyone concerned, especially you Ian,but the right decision. All stay safe and plenty of opportunities in the future.

I'd be suprised if international travel starts at all in 2020.

There is an EU meeting on the 15th May that will decide things,
we can only live in hope??

If we cant go in May we still have a years grace on the Eurotunnel bookings.

What planet are you on.
This thing isnt going to vanish just because lockdown is relaxed.

Steve_PPP 25-04-2020 03:18 PM

No chance of May happening Ian i'm afraid. Even if they allow hotels to open, there won't be freedom of movement at borders, international travel will be limited to work/essential purposes only for a while I expect. Germany have done a better job than us of limiting the death toll, partly due to much more extensive testing. The last thing they're going to do is open the doors to thousands of Brits coming over potentially carrying it - we're looking to be one of the worst affected European countries alongside Italy, Spain & France.

I'm booked for a week out there at the end of July - 3 months away this week. I'm doubtful we'll be allowed to travel for that...

Red Baron 25-04-2020 06:05 PM

I've written off the possibility of all international travel for 12 months or so. I'll pay for my holiday next week and as soon as they cancel it I'll reschedule for next summer.
Going to be a summer of bbqs in the garden with the family.

Frenchie 27-04-2020 07:46 AM

I guess Ian is just voicing what we are all hoping that life will begin to get better. Of course it's going to take time, but the latest figures give some signs of hope. Once we are back to normal I think we should have a weekend meet ,with accommodation so alchol can be consumed. Stay safe everybody.

Agreed 100%..

Restrictions are changing all the time.

Steve_PPP 07-05-2020 09:17 AM

So from 18th May, hotels in Germany are allowed to accept tourists and not just business travellers.

Still have the problems of:
- masks having to be worn anywhere in the Nurburgring area (apart from in the car)
- no passenger swapping allowed for laps
- no spectators in the main viewing areas
- car parks closed, main paddock at GP circuit opened for 'socially distanced' parking between laps.
- at the moment, the borders from Belgium/France are still closed to non-essential traffic
- no idea if restaurants will allow people to sit inside as normal after this date, or whether they will all still be takeaway only.

If you're short of masks, try these on for size :D

Ferd 07-05-2020 09:38 AM

Yeah the borders to Germany are still pretty much closed anything but essential or cross-border workers with papers. The surrounding countries are all complaining about it, even the border towns all flying flags at half-mast in protest.

Then there's the "border" between the UK and France, and I don't see that one being opened any time soon considering the situation in the UK and France not having had a had good time of it either and wanting to make it worse again.

My feeling from chatting to my friend across the border in Germany is that, yes they may open things up more in time for the trip, but it's not going to be very "open" as we're finding from the restrictions around the Ring and will make for a rather joyless trip. I would think postponing until after the summer is the best option.

BIG"E" 07-05-2020 12:19 PM

Thanks you for your post Steve and Ferd

I am in constant contact with all those on the list.

This is a fast moving situation with what seems to be daily changes.

It will be very interesting to see what Borris says on Sunday.

However..

I had a long conversation/discussion with Frank (the hotelier) yesterday.

on his advice I have decided to POSTPONE this years trip.

For the following reasons: (which obviously could change)

At the moment the borders are effectively shut (which could change)

There will be no public viewing or car parks open such as Brunchen.

No groups of more than 2 or any other meetings

You will have to sign in to any venue you go into pubs, cafe and restaurants. so they can trace you or notify you if you have been close to any contamination.

The place is going to be overrun with the police, the speeding rules and fines have recently changed and they are looking closely at any modded cars.

Masks will have to be worn.

So the days of sitting outside and enjoying a few beers watching the world go by are not happening yet, may be later in the year.

I cant quote what Frank said, but what sums it up is: there is no point in coming because of all these fooking rules and police will spoil your fun!!

So what I am proposing is to go on the weekends of

September 11th to 14th.
or
October 2nd to 5th. (this is Green Hell weekend the weekend after VLN )

What are your thoughts please ?

Ferd 07-05-2020 12:38 PM

Both dates are ok with me, although that still depends on my manager approving them.
