Help if you can?

I am getting the de-cat sytem fitted tomorrow.

The downpipe I have got, has got a metal spacer inserted into it (please see the pictures below) and wanted to know what, why and where fors?

Speaking with Martyn on Saturday, he mentioned he thought that this was a bit of a fad mod a few years back, as a way of keeping the gases from the dump valve seperate from the exhaust gases.

It is only two small tack welds on it so easily removed if I wanted to.

Any information / opinions would be greatly appreciated.

not seen that before i would take it off it must restrict flow

i would say its to do with the separating the wastgate gasses to the exhaust gases to speed up gasses overall, how far does it go down?

AndyWRX 19-10-2009 12:57 PM

ive seen that on a few down pipes on driftworks, not entirely sure how it works but i think it seperates the gasses to the waste gate, but on drift works they have a seperate pipe welded to the down pipe for it

Crowman 19-10-2009 01:00 PM

It is for the seperating of gases, there are a few write ups on scoobynet etc. Think it was never proven if it made any benifit.
I woulkd get a pair of grips and remove it, any lumps/weld tags left inside need to be ground back.

Its a divorced wastegate style downpipe.

The theory is that by seperating the exhaust / wastegate gases, you smooth out the flow of gasses from the turbo.

Thought to bring back the loss of low end torque that is a result of going from 2.5 to 3' system,

I would leave it in and see how it goes,

Tone, on further inspection, it actually goes down about 9 inches and narrows. I would say that this is a definate for keeping gases seperate.

It also looks like a good job has been done with this, it's not just a simple tack weld but a well made bit of kit. Interesting.

it was a fad mod as Martyn mentioned.
You need to be careful it doesn't fowl the wastegate on your turbo.

TBH I would knock it out.

Good info matey.
I would say its up to you really, cant see it sgoing to make much diference either way. just need to make sure the devider does not foul/interfere with the turbo fitting.

I know nothing.

I am going to go for it.

If it doesn't work, I'll whip it off and take it out, simple as.

If it does............ happy days.

Not on yet, Gatwick have spotted another couple of issues which they are putting right. Hope to get it back today or tomorrow.

was one of them, Steve you have something wedged in your downpipe:whistle:

worzel 21-10-2009 10:03 AM

No, no problem with that at all. Just some bits not right from the re-build.

Oh dear exactly!

A couple of annoying bits. A bolt sheared on the turbo and a heat shield under the turbo that was not very good and needs replacing.

They are also going to sort the oil leak while its there too. Very slightly annoying :brickwall:

Tell me about it!

I don't remember ever killing an albatross, but my luck sure points to the fact I must have done at some point.

Maybe I'm a re-incarnation of the Ancient Mariner.

I have just had dave from Gatwick Subaru on the phone, we now have to ditch the downpipe Saj supplied as it just doesn't fit well, going for an H&S downpipe and it will be job done.

Saj will get a swift kick in the male chicken (no..... not rooster, the other one!) for this!

Anyway, must get back to killing fairies and making my luck worse.

C. J. 21-10-2009 02:41 PM

Would you be better off with a H & S back box as I have the mid section and then its all nice and shiney ?

Crowman 21-10-2009 03:01 PM

Glad we spent time lovingly wrapping the down pipe.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh:boom::boom::boom::boom::boo m:

AndyWRX 21-10-2009 04:22 PM

At least the bits were spotted when they were and didnt develop into anything larger so thats good i guess, chin up though mate itll be finished soon

Lucky 21-10-2009 05:54 PM

This will just make the moment everything is right even better mate.

At least thesee things are being spotted now and not half way up the A23.

worzel 21-10-2009 06:02 PM

Exactly. It will be worth it in the end I know.

Just seems such a long time now.

RobEvo5 23-10-2009 03:07 PM

I think you should just get it all sorted and then cut your losses and sell it to me for beans ;) :D
