Cable on gearbox

I've just changed the clutch on my scoob (heaviest gearbox in the world!) and noticed a cable coming down from the gear selector area attached to a lever on the nearside of the box.
Any ideas what this is?
The car is a 2002 Type UK STI Prodrive with PPP.
