Another historic pier up in flames:sadno:..........................and kids to blame, little f*^$s:kickbutt:

BIG"E" 06-10-2010 07:08 AM

Another part of the towns heritage gone.

Yesterday was a sad day all round, with the passing of Sir Norman Wisdom also.

I used to love watching his films especially The Square Peg.

Skullfudge 06-10-2010 07:38 AM

Damn I never knew about this, nor Norman Wisdom :(

Steve_PPP 06-10-2010 08:22 AM

Remember the same happening to the West Pier :( (and the fire that followed on the Palace Pier).

shame.....

XRS 06-10-2010 08:55 AM

Very sad. Could still see the smoke from Eastbourne when I walked the dogs yesterday afternoon.

Suspect it'll go the same way as Brighton's West Pier :(

worzel 06-10-2010 09:09 AM

It is so sad to watch heritage like this just go up in smoke. As has already been mentioned, I hope it doesn't go the same way as Brighton Pier.

Skullfudge 06-10-2010 09:10 AM

You really feel as though you want an hour in a room with the two little bastads that done this.
They will get told off, sweep the street for a year and that will be it.

What should happen is have a "Hastings Betting Day".

Set them on fire in Hastings high street then let the Hastings residents have bets on how long it takes them to reach the sea!.
Winner takes all.

Chunk 06-10-2010 09:17 AM

Little *******

Used to hoilday in Hastings, been on the pier loads of times. Won loads of 2p's

Hope they rebuid it

Crowman 06-10-2010 10:06 AM

Ha! Ha! that sounds like a plan. Just seams to convenient to me. As Yesterday Hastings council where meeting to discus buying it back from the cowboys who currently own it. The council had already put a bid in & then all of a sudden it set's on fire. After the hype & the tv side of things giving it more publicity than its had in many years. I just wonder if that bid has now been increased???:shark:

and that was old pence.:ok:

In its day the pier had every top group there was in the 60s except for The Beatles.

Well thats what my dad told me.

I saw loads of groups Procal Harem, The Sweet, Showaddywaddy, Mud, Madness, Leo Sayer, Gary Glitter to name but a few.

Anger 06-10-2010 09:30 PM

Use to go raving on there to back in the good old days... lots of good memories

Scott.T 06-10-2010 10:16 PM

Best thing for it IMHO, it was always a 2nd or 3rd rate pier compared to the likes of Eastbourne or Brighton.

It may of had good bands inthe 60's but I frequented the 1/2p machine in the 70's and it was very rough around the edges even then.
I have had a few good times under the pier tho' ;)

The preservation society were just wasting money getting survey's and estimates to rebuild it. The trouble with Hastings is that too many residents (and non-resident jobs worths) think things should and always be as they were in the 19th century regardless of maintenance costs and in some cases the 11th century (alot has happened since 1066).

It's just a shame the pier didn't go up in flames in 2 weeks time, they could of strapped some fireworks to it for the Hastings Day Bonfire celebration.

You only have to read the local paper to see that there are occasionally some of us that are prepared to talk sense rather then nostalgia.

In my opinion it shoud be bulldozed.
A new structure should bebuilt 300yds east nearer and visible from the town centre and a more modern structure.

You will atract more tourism with a modern design then you will with a 19th century relic that can be seen in many a 19th century seaside town.

Weren't having a good time with a box of matches were you?

Never been on Hastings pier, so don't know how it compared to Brighton or Eastbourne.... but imo its always sad to see history burn down, whether it was cost effective to restore or not.

If it were like Eastbourne or Brighton Pier I would of been sad to see it in flames. But it was never a patch on them and always neglected by it's owners. And ironically one of the only ones you had to pay to get on.

Another council failing, much like the White Rock Baths (before it was turned into an icerink), the Memorial clock (hmm.... this went up in flames too), the Bathing Pool and the Burton arch (demolished by the council overnight, to prevent outrage). But hey...we get a new Asda for Christmas.

I can't see the Pier being back in use in my lifetime before or after the fire. Everything in Hastings takes decades to get through the Red Tape.
They play so much on tourism, but have little investment, yet it's one of the most expensive places to park on the south coast.

:agreed::agreed::agreed::agreed:

The Hastings Borough Councilors are a bunch of tossers.:wa::wa:

The trouble has been that who has ever owned the pier has never put any money back into it.
Unlike the owners of Eastbourne and Brighton piers.

simonairheadz 07-10-2010 01:25 PM

i cant think that any council would invest in a new pier anywhere in GB,so yes i cant ever see it being done, and as said it was pretty crap lol

Skullfudge 07-10-2010 05:11 PM

We have done much work in Hastings.

We cut the top off of The Pavilion Shopping Centre Car Park and were involved putting on the top new car park floors, fitted the large stone features on the top corners and much more.

We also get involved with Hastings council working on churches etc and reduced the wall that runs along side White Rock Bowling facility. It also had huge damp problems that we put right.

I have meetings with council staff and most don't seem to have much interest although I must say there is one guy in charge of the towns heritage that is extremely good at his job and fully committed.

Hastings seems to suffer with many homeless people ?? in actual fact I swear blind about 6 yrs ago I saw Big E sitting on the pavement outside the amusements with a few 50p's in a hat that was placed in front of him ?

Scooby Roo 09-10-2010 10:47 PM

I worked there many years ago sticking a tunnel underneathe the town centre.

Councillors there need their heads testing, bunch of lunatics.

I did hear that the Queen opened the big shopping centre there so the council put on busses to send the homeless for a day trip to Ramsgate. Idiots brought them back in the afternoon. Ramsgate's a bigger hole than Hastings IMHO so wouldn't have noticed :D

Otherwise the problem with Hastings other than the Concil is the lack of access. If they had a better rail link and road access was improved other than the woeful A21 and A28 [from memory] then people would turn up much like Brighton. Until that's fixed the Council will run the town into the ground.

Ranting on a bit so will shut my face now ;)

Bad luck on the pier but wouldn't hold my breath for a replacement or rebuild. :(
