CV issue
Hi guys looking for some advice on the above,
Not long ago I had a CV boot split so I had changed them all. ( about 6-9 months ago) After a long drive back from Southampton the next day I changed my tyres and noticed the CV boot on the driver's side the outer boot had slipped off the hub side. I then put the CV boot back on and had a quick look around there wasn't a lot of grease around so I thought it would be ok. I then went to Farnham and just as I got off the M3 when coming off the power not applying the breaks I heard something like a lose nut from the driver side front wheel. I pulled over and had a quick look and didn't see anything suspicious. After about 8 hours or so I went home and all seemed good, until when I got home as I came of the motorway I heard the same noise. Too tried and dark to have a look. So left it. I'm going to have a look when I can and bought some CV grease to put into the boot. My guess is that there wasn't enough grease ( I hope ) Anyone got any thoughts or ideas. Am I right in thinking that if there's not enough grease when the drive shafts are heated and the CV are hot the grease is more viscous and therefore the CV makes more noise? Any advice would be welcome thanks. |
sounds feasible, when spinning at speed it would be possible if the boot had come off to spin out all the grease and the metal on metal would then effectively overheat and could make a noise,id refit with plenty o grease and a metal compression clamp, and just monitor it for a while.
