84 Brat Project

Thought I may as well pop a thread up about my Brat build.

Thats how I bought it, I've stripped the front end

http://i592.photobucket.com/albums/t.../cougar017.jpg

And done bugger all else really since last year.Except a lot of research on high power scoobs in general.Oh and parts collecting. But now I have my garage back after selling this

http://i592.photobucket.com/albums/t...ZRFRBJ9Kz4.jpg

So I can crack on :norty: Got a 2.5 cdb with forged guts done 5k miles, but it has wrx heads on it so my mission this week is to finish stripping the engine and check it all so there's no tears later....(Thanks Anger) Launch the wrx heads in the bin.....

Still debating on head choice as I have newage manifold with 800 Lateral Injectors...but I have a brace of V3sti heads (that I'm just stripping to have a look over) and a ph 1 front entry inlet manifold. Hmmmm

Whatever heads I use they will sent to be cnc ported and hand finished, new bronze guides and valves and spring etc etc.....its all in the heads chaps:sadnod:

Need the engine bay to look something like this

http://i592.photobucket.com/albums/t...m/2970_8mg.jpg

If I get it something like this I'll be happy........

http://i592.photobucket.com/albums/t...m/2970_9mg.jpg

Will keep you posted

Anger 21-03-2011 07:37 PM

Cant wait to see this project come together :)

Nige 21-03-2011 07:43 PM

Keep posting looks like this may get interesting.

Nige 21-03-2011 07:47 PM

Shhhhhh dont mention heads the Scoobs on here are all about block work. If you start them on head work i will loose my small advantage.

old93ra 21-03-2011 08:00 PM

Will have the engine stripped this week, order some plastiguage and dig my micrometers out and have a measure up see whats been happening in there. I think its got wossner pistons and pouter rods. So may be a new set of pistons if the rods are ok with cosworth or SMG's one's.As Pouter make good rods. I'm going to get a set of pistons from the USA anyway as they can send them to Swaine Tech to be coated, anti friction skirts and ceramic tops.

Will sell the clutch an Act organic 420lb/ft and a six puck 520 lb/ft only done 3k. Get new clutch suitable for 6 speeder, send the whole rotating assembly including clutch to http://www.vibrationfree.co.uk/ for a race spec balance.
Again worth every penny......

Order a GT3076 and we are off...........Well nearly:whistle:

No to the cool charger but yes to an uncluttered engine bay......

The main reason is it doesn't weigh much....and power to weight is where it at. There's someone who sprints a Foz saw a vid on 22b a while back, really mad mobile.....

The aim is to build a "reliable" useable and quite powerful motor, I'm hoping to get the weight down under 900kgs pref 850 with about 450 wheel HP.
But I hate noisy engines so usually spend the time on having them balanced, making the correct choice of components, quality machine work and spot on working tolerences.I dont do grinding buckets or valves etc, if the gap is wrong buy the right size shim. I like happy engines that make power easy. Thats about it really, havent done a project for years so I'll get this done and see what happens.

I have a Motec M800 to run it, so should be cool

Chunk 22-03-2011 12:32 PM

Thats what got me doing this  Alright in Oz but what about one of our summer showers :ninja:

Debating on where to mount the blower, I'm going to have a measure up and see if there's enough room for a front mounted Turbo. There is plenty of room between the back of the engine and the bulkhead though. As its 4WD I cant shift the engine back which is a pity.

old93ra 23-03-2011 07:09 PM

Got the other head stripped out apart from the valves......

http://i592.photobucket.com/albums/t...m/SDC11123.jpg

Stripped more of the 2.5 lump and put on an engine stand, hopefully get the heads off in the next couple days then split it and have a peek.
