Rear Shocks WRX Sti

wrx sti 2003 Pro Drive

My rear shock passenger side needs replacing, its a bit knocky on slow movement and doesnt return when pushed down.

It doesnt happen all the time and usually starts when the car has been driven for a while.

I`d like to know the cheapest option and what to replace them with, is it a big job... that = big expense

Hi there you can go route aftermarket BC,Apex etc.,yes from £500-£700.
Or you can go via route of KYB,which are OEM replacement, price for 4 is around £399 or you can buy just pair, these selling Camskill

Not to bad to fit either, just need to get the alignment looked at after.

S300BYJ 20-05-2011 09:17 PM

Ok thanks will look into what you have recommended, is it a big job to do ?

S300BYJ 20-05-2011 09:21 PM

Lol you answered my question... its been like it for a while but didnt know it was the shocks til tonight :-(

Its just annoying and l`m wondering where to go with the car, l`ve had it nearly 8 years and now things are starting to go wrong, although its only done 44k

midlife2 20-05-2011 09:23 PM

Not to big a job, have changed them on my ra. Not sure if you would want a hand fitting them?

Scott.T 20-05-2011 09:32 PM

Strip them down, clean out, fit a grease nipple and re grease. Alot cheaper then £700. I did post a YouTube vid on here a few month back that explains the problem and how to solve it.

Simplest and cheapest thing to do is just get a couple of new KYB Ultra SR shocks from Camskill. You can use your existing springs and top mounts, easy swap for a garage.

Are the kyb 40mm inverted struts aka sti or standard 20mm aka wrx.

Hmmmm good question. i noticed they had different part codes for wrx and sti when i was buying a set, so i guess they have a part for both?

S300BYJ 23-05-2011 12:47 PM

Thanks Steve that sounds worth looking into :ok:

simonairheadz 24-05-2011 11:59 AM

for now, jack the rear up pull the rubber gator back,a liberal spray of wd40 garor down, lower all done (seriously this does work for a period of time)

After emails back and forth to Camskill they have advised these, are these a good option and the ones you steve recommended :paranoid:

I have found a garage in Worthing that deals with scoobs and been quoted £90 labour a side to fit

Thanks for all your advice

Julie

£90 labour a side sounds a bit steep, but maybe their labour rates are not much less then dealer per hour.

I would expect to be able to change 'both' sides in about 1 - 1.5 hours

Those part numbers tally up with what the catalogue says is needed for a 03/04 blob STI so they look correct :ok:

But i agree with Scott, £90 a shock is steep on the labour side. Brent @ SMD did mine and i paid £105 for all 4 (and that included changing a wheel bearing too!). Top fella

S300BYJ 25-05-2011 05:25 PM

Ok l`ll look into Brents although by the time l`ve paid the petrol to get there and amused myself shopping whilst the work is being done for convenience/time sake l dont think l`ll be any better off :-o

Will look into options again though as l need this done as cheap as poss, l`ve just had to pay out £500 on my VW camper...everything happens at once :-(

:thanx:
