Moley's STI

After owning the car for 2 years, and having finallly got it pretty much where i want it to be, i thought i'd post a project thread.

I bought the car in 2010 after having a Classic for 6 years, having done quote a few mods to that.

Was originally going to get a blue one, but after looking at a few i ended up with another silver one. The car had a couple of mods - Afterburner backbox, 18" alloys and BC coilovers.

When i first got it....

http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w...2/DSC00163.jpg

The wheels seemed a bit narrow for the car, so replaced them with some Rota Grids in white. Also had the paintwork tidied up, and got some original foglight covers and a front splitter.
Looking a bit better....

http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w...2/DSC00190.jpg

The handling wasn't as good as the Classic, so fitted a 24mm rear Whiteline ARB, 22mm front ARM, and droplinks all round - which certainly helped.

A few months later i added a 3" turbo back Milltek exhaust system, Cosworth panel filter, and had an Ecutek re-map by Simon Roe (Jolly Green Monster). The car was running 339bhp, which i was happy with.... for a while...

Next addition was the AP 6 pot brakes i'd kept off the Classic, and i also painted the rear to match, including yellow Brembo stickers....

http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w...2/IMG_0789.jpg

I'd noticed a small loss in power after a track day, which was eventually traced to a blowing gasket between the turbo and up-pipe. Whilst it was being done i replaced the standard up-pipe to an APS one.
I was pretty happy with the power, so i decided to do some cosmetic changes, to add my own touch to the car.
Had the windows tinted, de-badged the rear, then concentrated on the front.

I'd alreay de-tango'd the headlights, so next step was the dark headlight mod. I also swapped the pink grille badge for a dark one, and fitted the Chargespeed brake ducts/fog covers i'd recently bought. (Thanks Tom)
Looks much better IMO....

Inside was next. Managed to get hold of a black WR1 interior, which i'm really happy with. Much more comfy than the original seats, and look great! Got a dark grey carpet and new mats to match the seats aswell.

Next was a power increase.
I'd bought a RCM400 turbo, and was collecting the supporting mods.
Got a RCM induction kit, SFS intake pipe (after the Samco one i had collapsed), Power Enterprise 650cc injectors, and a 3 port boost solenoid.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...X/IMG_1539.jpg

Fitted the parts (which was a nightmare) and headed down to Surrey Rolling Road to see Charlie and Simon.
I knew the power would be slightly limited as i am still on the standard TMIC, so was quietly hoping for 375bhp.
I was very happy with the results!

Other than driving the car home, today was the first time i've given it a proper drive (Mrs Moley uses it as her everyday car)
To say i'm happy is an understatement! It pulls hard all the way up to the redline, and is really smooth. Yet another 10/10 for Simon!

Next mods are handling ones. I've bought a JDM STI Quickrack for it, and am going to change the ride height slightly. Hopefully that'll make it handle like the Classic did.
Other than that, i'm not too sure. Am thinking of going for a FMIC, as with that fitted it should be able to hit the magic 400bhp, but i don't want to chase figures, it drive nicely as it is.
I haven't had much of a chance to use it this year, as spare time has been spent on the house and planning my wedding.
I want to get it on track at least once this year, and Faney in the process of building a track car (also an Impreza), so will be helping with that.

Steve_PPP 25-06-2012 08:33 AM

Great looking scoob this, looks so much nicer now than when you bought it, the silver grills were too bling bling for me!

C. J. 25-06-2012 09:05 AM

Nice :)
For 9 hp is it worth putting a fmic on ?

ralliart didz 25-06-2012 12:14 PM

very nice gary, love the fog light ducts and the seats/wheels.:10:

worzel 25-06-2012 03:21 PM

Love it Gary, you've done a really great job with yours mate :ok:

RobEvo5 25-06-2012 03:35 PM

Nice spec and sensible mods and place to stop. The 2.0 sti lump seems to be able to run around 400bhp pretty reliably now. And the path you have taken was something I was very close to taking myself before getting the S4.

Blob STI's can be had for very little money right now, bolt on a decent turbo, bigger injectors and either ECUTEK or opensource, decat and hey presto a reliable 400bhp.

Ginola 25-06-2012 04:27 PM

Love the look Gary, Im particularly liking the Chargespeed brake ducts and de-tango'd tinted lights ;)

What kind of ride hight are you going for? do you want me to have a quick measure up on mine? remember you saying how you liked the way it sits.

Dave.

Yeah please, if that's ok. The previous owner had the coilovers set up, and i'd like to tweek them a bit.

CJ - i'm considering the FMIC for safety really, a few more bhp would just be a bouns

That puts you at the 400 mark. Best think about forge me thinks.

Tomma 25-06-2012 09:21 PM

Very nice indeed! Ducts really set the front off! :ok:

Moley_WRX 25-06-2012 09:26 PM

The Newage 2.0 STI lump seems happy at 450bhp, lots running that power now, so there is still room for more - safely (i hope)

Moley_WRX 25-06-2012 09:28 PM

Better pic of the front....

Hi Gary,

sorry for delay,

Measured from the centre of the centre cap to the wheel arch in millimetres...

........NS OS
Front 330 332
Rear. 335 335 (*rears have the widetrack arch extensions so could add 2/3mm on if you don't have these to get same angles as they extend below the metal arch behind by a couple of mm)

That's measured without anyone in, the heights/geometry etc where done with 50kg in the driver seat so that should be not far off spot on when your sat in it..
The Tein type flex spring rates in mine I believe are 7kg front and 6kg rear..

The Cambers are -1.48 degrees front and -1.35 rear. Caster = 4.4 :ugeek:

Believe this is a fast road set-up.

quite some rake angle from just 5mm difference in height!

Dave.

ps. Can park them next to each other at modified live and see how similar the angles are after your done?? ;)

Moley_WRX 25-06-2012 10:43 PM

Excellent, cheers for that.

I know what i'm doing after work tomorrow now, lol

bigemp 26-06-2012 08:47 PM

Lovely looking blob gary

Moley_WRX 26-06-2012 09:10 PM

Cheers for the kind comments guys.

Ginola - good talking you you today. Just had a proper measure, mine is 345 on all 4 wheels. Going to drop the front 5mm, then it'll be the same stance as yours, but 10mm higher all round.

Although may consider 340 rear and 335 front

Crowman 26-06-2012 09:22 PM

Love it Gary, great mods , really spot on

munk 26-06-2012 09:42 PM

ScoobyStu 28-06-2012 12:24 PM

Lovely car mate, nice power too :-)

A question if I may. Where did you get your brake ducts from, direct from chargespeed or another company? I sent money via paypal last night to vivid racing only for them to suddenly announce they no longer had any in stock. Trying Carbonfiberhoods now, hopefully with more luck! Cheers.

Moley_WRX 28-06-2012 07:05 PM

I bought them second hand. I think ABW can get hold of Chargespeed stuff

ScoobyStu 01-07-2012 05:58 PM

Thanks for replying. Is ABW a company or a member on here?lol

Steve_PPP 01-07-2012 06:03 PM
