Pikes Peak 2012

This might belong in videos as there is a fair bit of video content here, so please feel free to move it as you see fit mods :)

Anyhoo, I see Pikes Peak now has a rescheduled date of the 12th August (it was cancelled due to fires in the area) and details on some of the machinery having a crack at the hill is starting to emerge, including a subtle looking 850 BHP twin turbo NSX...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f-FBZrVAJCU

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fvSwDwPRYCM

...and the return of Paul Dallenbach in his mentalist buggy thing: except this time it has even more aero nailed it...

http://images.thecarconnection.com/m...00393820_m.jpg

...and an engine chucking out 1400 hp and 1301 lb-ft. Ouch.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0pTT1VmOQ4

Due to a clash of dates with the ERC Liam Doran won't be taking the Monster RS200 up the hill...

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7009/6...8821e8f3_z.jpg

...he will be handing the keys to his Dad Pat to do the honours instead!

The entry list also shows the Mach 2 racing team should be there in another RS200 driven by Mark Rennison (a name some of the older rallycross fans might remember ;)). Really looking like it will be a good scrap this year!

Some mental looking cars there..... Definitely gonna keep an eye for this, would it get aired on tv at all??

Sadly not, I don't think it even gets aired in the US. :( The event seems to have been getting an increasing amount of media attention the last few years though, so I hope TV coverage will come in the future.

In the meantime the official website...

http://www.usacracing.com/ppihc

...is way better than it used to be and updates pretty regularly.

Yeah, he's back this year in a new car (I think I posted this before, but it must have been lost during the site outage). Important facts to know about his new set of wheels:

a) Its electric and;
b) It looks like it was nicked from the set of the Jetsons.

http://images.thecarconnection.com/l...00390998_l.jpg

http://images.thecarconnection.com/l...00390997_l.jpg

Makes last years car look pretty normal in comparison!

http://images.thecarconnection.com/l...00391003_l.jpg

Be interesting to see how this fares on the climb, especially with so much potent machinery heading there this year (and with the course fully tarmac for the first time).

Tomma 24-07-2012 06:48 PM

That's insane!! Looks like a Batmobile! I suppose he only needs enough charge for 10 minutes or so!!

Think I prefer the old car, there's something very unsettling about driving fast and not being able to hear an engine scream!

ralliart didz 24-07-2012 07:12 PM

love the first pic, some cool looking cars.:ok:

Skullfudge 24-07-2012 09:42 PM

I follow this event every year.

Would be awesome to take part.

Its going to be interesting to see in action, thats for sure. I can think of several big advantages of running electric power, but how that will translate to a competition car is going to make for interesting viewing.

Have you ever seen any interviews with the Audi Le Mans drivers? They talk about the same thing with regards to the diesel Le Mans cars: at speed all they can hear is wind noise!

(There won't be any short shifting on race day ;))

Its this weekend and it looks like most of the "big" motoring websites are there. :ok:

Whats better than an RS200 with 900 BHP? One with over 1000. Obviously:

Tomma 10-08-2012 05:58 PM

1000BHP in an RS200...... I couldn't even guess how quick that would be, amazed it would keep traction for the best part of the climb!

Steve_PPP 10-08-2012 06:00 PM

Cool stuff, some wicked photos on there :D

Link at the bottom didn't work so have updated it for you.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEIHwC1jVSc

According to the Pikes Peak website the main event will be broadcast live on the interweb at this address:

http://www.usacracing.com/ppihc

Won't get my hopes up until I see it streaming and working, but looks like will be possible to watch it, hurrah!

tbtstt 13-08-2012 09:32 AM

Forgive the triple attack on the thread, but more news and videos! The overall event winner was Rhys Millen who took the win by less than a tenth of a second and set a new course record of 9:46.146 in the process.

Tajima and his electric car looked bloody fast in the practice...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-cxvkxZ_qJo

...but he failed to complete the course on race day. Interesting to see that the fastest electric car to the top was only 25 seconds behind the event winner.

It was a really bad race day for the unlimited class cars. Unsure what happened to the two RS200's, but neither of them finished the climb. :( Paul Dallenback had a incredibly luck escape when his throttle stuck on at 130 MPH ...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpQtPhRDDs4

...but not as lucky as Jeremy Foley, who launched his Evo off the hill...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zEUrEPPABbY

...he was running with a co-driver: both of them were injured, but they are OK.

Full list of the finishing times can be found here:

Jesus :o

Those two shunts look awful, i know most crashes at Pikes Peak are normally high speed but damn. Glad there were no fatalities!

First vid is cool tho, the torque on electric motors is crazy :drive:

Yeah, the Dallenbach crash is so fast, but the Evo rolling down the hill looks savage, must have been like being stuck in a washing machine. Shame to see two well prepared cars written off, but at least everyone onboard is OK.

Yeah; can see electric power working particularly well at Pikes Peak, as it shouldn't be affected by altitude the same way as a combustion engine: shame that Tajima didn't make it to the top to prove that point!

Few more videos; first up a neat little compilation of some of the unlimited class cars:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14teSpQig3o

And the official onboard video of Millens winning run:

Yeah. Don't know about the Dallenbach crash as you can't see what it hits as soon as its through the trees, but the roller down the hill was very lucky. Looks like the cage took a huge amount of repetitive hits by boulders to the roof, did a superb job considering.

tbtstt 15-08-2012 09:14 PM

Spoiler-cam view of the Dallenbach crash. I didn't realise how close to the start of the run it happened:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MnolSTQgy9Y

Stuck throttle + 130 MPH + trees = soiled underwear.

 Such a shame he never made it to the top as it would have been very interesting to see what sort of time his car made.
