Help Needed......Just for a change!
Good evening to you all
Some may have seen my post on the Facebook page regarding what happened to me today, so for those who haven't.... When I was driving from work earlier today, I was at about 3000rpm about to come on (full?) boost when it felt like the car had stalled/misfired/stuttered followed by a pop/bang from the exhaust. Tears began to well as I thought I'd just blown the engine, but it was still running, no smoke/flames/other pant filling signs. However the engine light is now on and won't go out. Not dared tried to get it to spool up again for fear of further damage. If the light wasn't on and you drove it off boost, you'd never know anything was wrong, much to my relief. Simon (JGM) answered my post on Facebook for which I'm very grateful. He thinks it's a boost related problem which even to a mechanical numpty like me, makes sense. Said it could be a map issue or split or popped off hose. Brilliant i thought, relief was felt and i even grimaced a little as I thought I'll sort this out then. Popped the bonnet and the headache began. There's loads of little hoses! I only found one near the turbo off the solenoid (i think) and that seemed OK. What I need and would like from a very helpful person is a picture or description of which pipes to check first or which one it could be because believe me, I'll be checking the brake lines, petrol lines the lot if left to it, absolutely none the wiser! It's an 03 UK Sti Blob, Stage 1 tuned by GRD. All I've done mod wise is run a cold air feed from for insets to air box as it had no feed at all, the snorkel had been removed. Saturday I was going to the rolling road day to check out if all was well.....Irony. Also put octane booster in, this is my second tank with it in. Sorry for the long winded post, I like to try and cover as much as possible so you half know what the hell I'm on about!! As always, thank you in advance, Stu Ps. If it helps as the weather was so atrocious there was no hard or even firm driving as such, car was well warmed up as had been running 20-25min and driven approx 6-7 miles when this happened. |
you need to plug it into diagnostic socket and read the codes first of all and go from there.

Hi there can you take the pictures with hoses which you are not sure, this should help there

Could be the MAF about to pack up, had this on mine when i first got it. Pulled my hair out checking hoses, all fine. Got a new MAF, problem gone.

Many thanks to you all for reading and replying to my post, it's greatly appreciated. |
Morning all. Received my OBD II code reader this morning, plugged it in and it has come back with code P0103 which is 'MAF or VAF A Circuit High Input'.
After doing research on the net it would seem that the MAF may just need cleaning or possibly replacing if that doesn't work. Also suggests air leak somewhere but on the eye all seems ok......:???: I'll give it a clean and see how it goes. |
if it w
as during heavy rain this can cause a MAF issue.........it "may" simply dry and sort be very careful attempting to clean them as they are fragile at best |

Hi, thanks for your reply. It was extremely bad weather Sunday, very heavy rain. I may take it for a drive in a bit then and see how it goes. I've not been near boost since it happened as i didn't/don't want to annoy it further! I'm not going to clean it now as when i removed the pipe between the MAF and the inlet, it appeared to be very clean inside so I'm now fairly confident that's not the issue. Thanks for your time, Stu. |

Took it out and made sure it was well warmed up then very gingerly increased revs a little at a time, all good. Took it somewhere more suitable and stretched her legs in 2nd, 3rd, and a little 4th, no problems at all. Seems you were correct and it was the rain. At the very least i can rule out an air leak anywhere and if it happens again and it's not raining, then I think I can safely say it's the MAF on its way out. Many thanks for your help, greatly appreciated. A very relieved Stu ;-) |
Glad you sorted. Nige had something similar in his old Bug STi when he hit a flood and saturated the air filter.

Glad you got it sorted. Always nice when its something simple
