Sporting Ford's (You have Owned)

Was sorting out some old piccies to hang/brighten up my garage, so thought I'd post a bit'o'my old Sporting Ford History.

Feel free to add your own past Sporting Fords.......

Fiesta SuperSport 1.3
Toe in the water Excercise by Ford before Mk1 XR2
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4773/...59bec81dfb.jpg

Escort Mk3 RS1600i
One of the best handling car's I have ever owned, especially with the 'Optional' rear anti-roll bar.
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4782/...aa0fd1c04c.jpg

Escort Mk3 Series 1 Turbo
180BHP FWD, would rip ya thumbs off with Torque Steer
Was near Concourse Condition, alas HPI detailed it as 'Scrapped' 18months after I sold it

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4787/...9b9f7866e4.jpg

Sierra 3-Door Cosworth
270BHP, always wanted one, got it then sold it after 6 months...didn't live up to expectations.
Oh! and 3-Doors and new baby did not mix....

Re: Sporting Ford's (You have Owned)

Never owned a Ford,

I started out with the original hatch back, followed by another.

Then a Triumph Toledo, for the mrs.

Then a long line of Vauxhall Astras,

starting with a white GTE mk1 which used to go round corners as if it was on rails. It was brilliant.

Then SRIs and GTEs and a GSi.

All very nice mate.
I would love the series 1 rs turbo.
I took my bmw for windscreen over tonbridge other day and in the workshop where they fit the glass was a mint, i mean concours RS1600i orange even the dash was mint , no cracks at all,it was under covers but i noticed the wheels, needless to say i got the guy to uncover it.
And yes its for sale.
I will dig my XR3i and saph cossi pics.
XR3i was ex demo.and cossie brought from stormont ford as 1 owner 21,000 miles, had it for 4 years, then had 100 plus mph misshap oops.

No cracks in dash is rare, my RS1600i had cracks back in 1989.
Series 1 was Crack free

I bet the RS1600i hasn't got the original unique to 1600i Battery Tray, mine was a combination of filler and underseal

After owning the MK3 for a while i started to realise how much i missed the MK2! sure the MK3 had a few more luxury's in it and it was obviously newer but some how it didn't feel as special.
I think its right what clarkson said though "Newer cars are getting slower" !!!

Oh yes, I forgot about the XR3s I had in 1981 - better left that way I think.

I bought the RS2000 when it was 6 months old from a chap who had another one in storage and unused. At the time Ford was trying to shift those RS1800 things, but I didn't want anything to do with alloy heads :cuckoo: I could have picked up a new RS1800 for the same money I paid for the RS2000. :brickwall:

RobEvo5 19-08-2010 05:22 PM

Must have missed this thread, but worth dragging back up in light of some recent nostalgia.

In true fashion of my car ownership I've had just a few fast fords :D. Lots of escorts of most derivatives, plenty of crappies, and cossies as well. Will see if I can dig up a few pics.

Best of all for me have been the saph Cossie's which gave 4 door practicalilty, comfort and bonkers performance for a chassis that could never handle it.

I remember going to a scoob meet many years back when I had a white Saph and we all went out for a drive to beachy head if recall. All the scoob drivers were having a spirited drive but nothing silly. But in order to keep up in the saph I was spinning up in 2 and 3rd on the exit of all corners and having to really concentrate. I was at the back so none of you new what was going on :D - You all arrived envigorated with a slight smile, I arrived like I had just taken and 'E'.

Great cars, and great days.....

AndyWRX 26-08-2010 03:19 PM

gotta love the older fords, most older cars have got alot more character than newer ones

Guy B 26-08-2010 04:11 PM

I had a red MK4 RS2000 then I had a Grey Fiesta RS Turbo, The Fiesta was the most mental thing I have ever driven! I have some pics that I'l dig out later

chrisp 26-08-2010 11:42 PM

Flint grey Sierra Saphire RS Cosworth, rwd and stage 1 with a big hybrid on it, spent and lost a lot on that car, died after a trip to castle coombe, ended up breaking it, had a lot of fun in it while it worked

tbtstt 27-08-2010 10:27 PM

Love the Cossie in your original post Silversurfer! :10:

I have to confess that I've long had a soft sport for fast Fords. If I were to win the lottery tomorrow I would definately have some Fords on the shopping list.

More pictures please former (or even current) fast Ford owners!

Anger 27-08-2010 10:43 PM

Had a RS Turbo Mk4 Van running 160bhp and one of the last Gun metal Grey Saph 4x4 Cossies running just over 430bhp.... cracked the block, so new block and full respray and then got stolen 2 weeks after :(

This was one of the first RS500's to get near to BTCC Grp'A' power back in the day.
it's seen a few style/looks over the years.

Looks nice and original now but I preferred it's look when it was on the Gold Compomotives.

Get a cheap scoob to use as they were intended and park it on your drive, and get a classic ford toy for the garage.;)

I cant remember the last time I have spotted a 70/80's classic ford on the road. It would certainly turn my head now if I spotted a Cossie, S1, supersport etc on the road.

Very true. Only problem is that some of the classic Ford's seem to go for silly money these days - I can't believe how much the price of Mk.1 and Mk.2 Escorts has shot up (and is continuing to do so).

Agree 100%, one and main reason I haven't jumped back into a classic ford. A different Marque but I do find myself trawling through early VW adverts at the moment, and MK1/MK2 GTI's are relatively good value for a similar era 80's classic. And arguably the less rusty and more reliable option..

I came very very very very close to buying this 2 weeks ago.
The scoob was as good as sold, all apart from money exchanging and V5's being signed.
All I had to do was go view the Turbo and decide Yes/No.
After a sleepless night I bailed out before the drive up to Warwick to view.

True.

I figure the 'someone else' must of had it.

Must have been tempted. You must have chuckled then when I mentioned last week going around a ford fair!

I still get very tempted by escorts, mk 2 cortina 1600e'S and even the odd vw split. I think ideally though I need to do one of those as well as the scoob!

And I've just seen my signature :rofl:

Lovely s1 but the only problem is they don't drive as nicely as the impreza s.
I did this went from my v3 sti back to s2 rst with some choice mods but just felt saggy in comparison.

That was a bit special and very very nice. Suprised you bailed out as it would have been a proper garage queen and complimented the Leon nicely. Love scoobs but only ever give the nicest examples a glancing look, but would be proper rubber knecking if I saw that S1 on the road.

But bet that S1 didnt come cheap...

Price wasn't too bad considering condition/work done. I had seen similar priced ones that were clean but not so well prepared as this one.

The one big thing that turned me away was that none of it would of been my own work. So whenever in discussion about it I would always be referring to the spec sheets that I had no say in and to what previous owners had done.......and for me that's just so against the grain. With the Scoob I know every nut'n'bolt and modification.

The thought of wind up windows, no power steering and then recalling the memories of CV joint, CV gaiter, Wheel bearing, Alternator, Start motor issues/chores with all my previous Fords was also off-putting.

You forget how reliable newer cars are, and 'fingers crossed' most of the things I have done to the Scoob have been done through preference rather then necessity.
I can't say the same for all my previous Fords 'but I still loved em'.

RobEvo5 10-10-2014 06:51 PM

I Get the thing about not being your own, and haven't put your stamp on it.

But the feel of how the car drives and the back to basics thing to me would be the appeal, much the same with all classics. You could spend 100K+ on an old Ferrari and it would feel dreadful and be unreliable compared to any modern car. But it would feel very 'special' and give you a real 'sense of occasion' when you drove it.

A S1 or any of the 80's classics will never match up to a modern sorted scoob as a balls out performance car, but as a toy and weekend car, and something that you will only likely see once or twice a year on the road in any given one year would make the car allot more special than even the best of scoobs....

Scoob are a hard act to follow especially now that clean sorted scoob are also now starting to fall into the category of a 'classic'. But would still love an old ford or classic 80's hot hatch.

The only answer mate is to sell the Leon use the scoob as a daily driver parked up on the drive and get a S1 for the garage... ;)

Finally found a scan of a photo of my RS1. Few days after I got it. I pulled all the non standard bits off. Used to clean behind the bumpers!

Maidstone council made it go missing one day ( long story )

Tiger stripes and the Tazmanian Devil...that brings back memories.
My RS1600i used to have the 7-Up Fido, with his fingers in his ears on the tailgate.

Great looking back at these classic Fords.
