A vote here for any of the VAG TDi's. I've got 2001 Passat 130 Sport Estate, looking a little tired now but comfortable, has climate, trip computer and as it's the sport has a 6 speed box and a bit more torque and you can get loads in the back and 50mpg. Only major cost was the Clutch and DMF but to be fair it had done 150K on the original. Now got 164K and doing 500 miles a week.
Heard bad stories about the injectors on the later 2.0 TDis. Just check for damp carpets and make sure all the electrics work.
