You'd fit a sandwich plate between the block (usually oil modine) and filter I believe although am not 100% sure you can remove the modine and use the sandwich plate straight onto the block with no fitment issues. The plate should ideally be thermostatic so that it allows the oil to warm up - without a modine in effect warming the oil on start up it can take a while for oil to reach operating temp (80 degrees or so). The modine cools the oil with the water in the coolant circuit so will have a warming effect as well as cooling
