Default Advice on an issue with a garage

My brother has a 2002 Range Rover which naturally the gearbox went on. He took it to a reputable garage (will omit name at the moment) and they fitted a reconditioned box with a years warranty. Under 6 months on its playing up already and he took it back there. They said that the oil cooler not working properly is what causes the gearbox to go, however they decided not to inform him of this when getting the gearbox replaced originally. If he had known this clearly he would have paid the minimal price for the part to get fitted whilst everything is out.

From what I understand last time he spoke to them they said he would have to play full price and fitting for the oil cooler and if the gearbox is faulty then he is liable for costs as it wasn't their work that is at fault.

Naturally he is a bit p***ed off as it was a massive bill, which he didn't quibble, any work they suggested on top he said go for it and paid in full on time with no hassle.

What advice can you give for dealing with this to get the most preferable outcome? I'm suggesting he offers to pay for the part (oil cooler) and they fit it for free. Then fingers crossed the box isn't damaged already.

Cheers

(ps I am anticipating a gearbox comment from Tone lol!)
