Not quite right. legaly, the tyres do not have to be the same on an axle, they just have to be the same type, i.e. both Radials or both cross ply.
As most modern tyres are now radials, this doesnt seem to be as much of a problem as it used to be.

It is however good practice to have the same tyre tread patern and depth on all wheels, or at least the same axle so you have the same amount of grip & breaking force either side of the car.
